I’ll try to look through the young adult books then. That’s what I mostly read and usually fantasy, sci-fi, or dystopian. I have books on hold at my library but wasn’t sure if they would actually get them or not
I've missed most of this conversation and I don't know what format(s) they're available in but my kids and I all enjoyed the Michael Vey books (the author is Richard Paul Evans, who I understand is a Christian author but the Michael Vey books are not religious AT ALL).

303,000+ worldwide cases now. 23,000+ in the US. The numbers are jumping like crazy.

It is bull_shit that American healthcare workers have such a PPE shortage they are being told to wipe down and reuse masks. Absolutely infuriating and a massive fail of the federal government.

We're watching the economy disintegrate in real time. 1 in 5 Americans already out of work. The numbers for Europe have to be just as bad. While there are no stores open to really shop at and you can't go to movies or whatever, my spending hasn't exactly fallen off a cliff. I spent a significant amount on preps when I saw this coming at the end of last month. I was ahead of the demand shock and able to get a lot of what we'd need longterm. But that was $500 worth of stuff. Then $500ish for tax prep on the heels of that. And I keep our kitchen pantry and fridge full now with fresh items (if I can get them) so I'm still doing my weekly $100 grocery pickup. I bought more alcohol this week. 🤣

I wasn't planning on spending $300 on emergency office furniture, but no choice so I did. We drove to pick that up this morning. I will probably set up the second office in the house in the basement. DH and I absolutely are going to need completely different workspaces or I will lose my mind.

I activated my Freedom cats for Q2. Grocery stores are good. Fitness/Gyms probably not great considering. Every gym here is banned from opening. I have a home gym anyway.

Congress is working on a massive stimulus package this weekend. $2T is what they are saying. That might just be the first package... we have to save the regular folks first. Companies like Disney can get in the back of the line. But I do worry about inflation. What a nightmare.

I did get Mexican takeout from my favorite place today. My first restaurant meal in 3 weeks. Another $26. The cashier told me they are trying to stay open as long as possible but this is killing them. The place was dark except for the entrance area and the kitchen. Broke my heart.

We arrive on June 24... does that mean more crowds that week?
We were there a couple of years ago and coincided with Dapper Day. I didn’t notice higher crowds and I loved seeing the people dressed up. They were adorable.

Are you checking out ebooks? If yes, disregard this but if not, see if your library system checks out ebooks. I use my kindle to read and I check them out through my library using Overdrive. The good thing is that since they are automatically checked back in, you will eventually get your “copy” of a popular book. I usually browse the library in one tab and check reviews on amazon in another tab.

Ours is on my list for sometime this week/next weekend if they are still opened. We'd just been there for my Mom's bday on the 8th, her's is the 9th, so I didn't want it this weekend. Got Italian from a small local chain last night so we had leftovers tonight. Not impressed and won't get from them again. Limited menu on DD all the time and I'd rather eat in for more options considering the price. My worry is our fav mexican place won't make it, they do already do some takeout so at least they're set up for it a bit. They don't have a website or a fb page so I'll have to call to see if they are open and without a menu Mom'll just have to pick a number from what she can remember she's ordered and be surprised :) I always get the same thing.

I just saw that Disney was teaming with Khan Academy for “Imagineering in a Box”, 32 episodes that show you aspects of their jobs. I think that will be popular here. The 3 big boys have online school 8-3. I’m just trying to keep the little one from becoming feral, or a couch potato of the highest magnitude. So far, we’ve stuck to a schedule of PE, yoga, and how to draw videos while trying to get schooling in as much as possible. I’m WFH but I feel that we have a lot of pressure to produce more and more, I imagine because of the fear of layoffs.

I’m not in the restaurant business but imho any place that wants to survive this needs to get on the delivery platforms. I certainly browsed through mine when I got a notice from a DoorDash today more restaurants were added to DashPass.

I’ve had notifications from both DoorDash and Uber Eats offering no contact delivery today. They KNOW this is their time to shine...

I’ve got quite a few of them available at my library as ebooks. I was just trying to use other outlets first. I saw the two free months of kindle unlimited so thought I would try it out.

SW cancelled my flights to close on my house in May. Not that they told me, I noticed it when I went to look at flights today to see if there were better times. Now there's one flight/day and it takes 8 hrs (for a 2 hr flight). Will probably end up driving 13.5 hrs instead, or flying AA. But that kills me, since I don't have points or a CP. First world problems. ;)

As a one-time Tempe resident I am totally not surprised. People talk about Flori-duh but Arizona (and specifically the Valley) ain’t far behind.

Have a WWYD question, since I need to finally get a new laptop to replace my ancient one, for WFH...I’m looking an an Apple certified refurb Macbook Pro, and am debating which card to put it on. None of the portals I have access to seem to offer any additional cash back on Apple purchases, so I’m looking at either my CFU or CSP. My gut feeling is the CSP for the extra purchase protection even though it would get me less UR points than the CFU. Thoughts?

They aren't on DD but they might be on the others, I've only had 2 months of uber credits and used one at work for lunch and the other as an actual uber ride (shocking I know) so I haven't looked at it. I'd rather go direct to them and be able to tip them, they are only a couple miles from our house, know us, know my order etc. But I agree that being on them or doing their own deliveries is key. I know DD etc are doing no contact deliveries but I still worry that the drivers could be working sick. I'm relying on the restaurants to be monitoring their teeny staff to avoid this stuff. It looked like there were 2 people working at the place last night when they prob should have had someone just to deal with the phone and deliveries so the cooks can cook.

I think the blame lies with the hospitals as much as the government. The hospitals aren't run by the government and they had plenty of time to prepare for this. Hospitals are very profit-oriented. I work for a large- non-profit healthcare company and our CEO makes 30 million a year. Yet we always lack the supplies we need to do our job.

Unfortunately. a lot of our supplies and pharmaceuticals are made in China. That's something that is going to take a while to change, but it would provide a lot of jobs in this country if we can.

Did you check the Chase portal? Usually Apple is on there for an extra pt/$ or more. I haven’t checked lately but when I bought DDs mac I went through there.

The role of the federal government is to protect its citizens. That doesn't just mean through military actions. It also means through health crisis, especially a pandemic. The CDC sent guidance about a strange new pneumonia in very early January. Perhaps some hospitals looked at this, but the take cues from the federal government. At times of crisis, the federal government becomes essentially a massive purchasing department. Governors assess what is needed at the state level and the feds are supposed to listen and help get the items - posthaste.

You wouldn't want a hospital to order 3,000 extra ventilators just because. That is very expensive and healthcare costs are already out of control. So it is a delicate balance.

I agree it is bad the bulk of our essential PPE is made in China. Demand shocks are a thing.

I work in healthcare too, on the administrative side.

I read a lot of YA, fantasy, sci fi there. Do you like ones with supernatural creatures like shape shifters and magic and vampires and were wolves? I might have some to recommend. Not like twilight lol

You should see the Tidal Basin and the cherry blossoms. Thought I'd take a jog down the National Mall today and wouldn't have a huge problem keeping 6 feet away from people... nope. So many tourists, so many locals! Running groups! People who should know better.
Yep, we took the dog to a local nature preserve today. We go there all the time, and normally there’s not a lot of people there, so keeping distance is easy. There is like 25-30 trails as well, so sometimes we’ve gone and not encountered another person the entire walk. Well today there was hordes of people. It’s like everyone is going stir crazy staying inside and there was sooo many people there, and congregating in large groups too, or had their entire extended family out with like 20 people. We were just trying to walk our dog, let him swim, and get some fresh air, but people were not respecting keeping their distance, kept walking too close to each other, etc. And I was shocked to see a lot of older people there even! We stopped at QT for gas after and I ran in to get us ice cream, and there were about 30 or so high school kids inside just hanging out. I think our state needs to start putting stricter enforcements out soon...
