@Lain @SouthFayetteFan @calypso726 I need your help. I need approx. 400,000 Marriott points to fulfill a ski vacation over New Years this coming year (dd decided she wants a ski trip instead of Machu Picchu and the hotels nights in Whistler at the Westin {our preferred property as they have a kitchen so we can do our own breakfast and I can make a pb&j sandwich for lunch, plus it's at the base of the gondola} are over $1,000.00 cash).

I don't know what I'm currently at with my 5/24 count, but here's what I have:

10/16: CSR
7/19: Chase Hyatt (not sure if this counts towards 5/24 since the rule changed in the fall of 2019)
9/19: CIP (business)
12/19: Hilton Aspire
2/19: Hilton AmEx business

I could get the Bonvoy with the 100,000 bonus point offer, but making the $5,000.00 spend might be tough (I don't have any big expenses planned in the next few months). I am willing to take the hit on my 5/24 for this since the cash price is unattainable (I also have to factor in lift tickets, food and transportation and her CASI classes -- she wants to take her instructors course)

There must be a business Marriott card I could get that would get me a bonus (could probably purchase items for my business to meet the MSR).

Is there any way to get 2 business Marriott business cards? I would try this to get another bonus.

I've already booked the nights on points -- just need to earn them lol.

Alternatively I could board the grAAvy train and book the nights with the AA miles portal. I was on there and I'd just need an additional 600,000 points to book the stay with this method. Doesn't seem viable.

Would it make sense to transfer the remaining points from my UR stash (that is looking increasingly useless with the Expedia portal).

Dh will not sign-up for any cards. He is loyal to his AmEx Platinum and only wants 2 cards (he needs a Visa for gas at Costco).

So you are 2/24, the Hyatt and Hilton Aspire count, the CIP and Hilton Amex Bus do not. Sorry, you will have a very difficult time earning 400,000 Marriott points without a player two, doable is just above 200,000 points with two sign up bonuses as you are limited to either the Amex or Chase cards given the new restrictions. Right now with Amex you can get the former AMEX Lux card the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant with a 450 AF with 100,000 points for 5,000 spend in 3 months and marriott bonvoy business card again 100,000 for 5,000 spend with 95 AF next year 125 AF. That would be 200,000 Marriott points, or you could go the Chase route but one of the sign on bonuses is only 75,000 Marriott points. Rinse and repeat for player two and you would be just over 400,000 with the spend. I agree with @SouthFayetteFan that transferring UR to Marriott typically does not make sense given the redemption rate and you are typically better off redeeming through the portal.

OMG now you’re tempting me. I took a quick peek and we only need a queen which would be about 1k which wouldn’t qualify for the Amex offer. But 10% off from Chase and Casper? There’s a store 10minutes away. Hmm

Not sure on availability of using the code in store, but definitely may be worth it for you to go check out the mattress and ask! FWIW, DH and I have been sleeping on a Casper for 3 years and love it. I switched from a traditional spring mattress to Casper with no issues.

I'm seeing points rates for the Westin Whistler at 130k points per night (is that what they're charging for a suite?). The Westin Whistler is a Cat 7 hotel with standard points redemption at 60k/night. What rate are you seeing? It sounds like you've already made a points advance reservation? Probably a good idea before peak pricing is introduced.

It looks like you're 2/24. The CIP and Amex Hilton Biz don't count as they are business cards that don't show up on your personal credit reports. The CSR is past 24 months.

@Judique already laid out your options well. You can sign up for the two Amex Marriott cards, which both have elevated 100k Marriott points after $5k MSR in 3 months offers right now until 4/24/19. The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant is the high-end card with a $450 AF, but comes with a $300 Marriott credit and Gold Elite status -- will count against your 5/24. The Marriott Bonvoy Business is a business card and won't count against your 5/24, but apply before 3/28/19 to get your first year AF waived, and a lower second year AF.

You should go for the Bonvoy Biz first, because you'll want to apply before 3/28/19, then get started on its $5k MSR. Before the elevated offer ends on the Bonvoy Brilliant on 4/24/19, generate a referral link from the Bonvoy Biz to refer yourself to the Bonvoy Brilliant for another 20k Marriott points referral bonus. This way you're working on only one $5k MSR first with the Biz, then when you're better positioned to tackle the second $5k MSR on the Brilliant you refer yourself for a 20k bonus before the Brilliant's 100k offer goes away. This will net you 220k Marriott points, plus whatever points you earn from your MSR spend. That gets you about halfway there.

Another option, if the redemption math is right, is to buy Marriott points from points .com. Currently, points .com is selling 50k Marriott points for $625. Points .com used to run sales on SPG points before the merger, but I haven't seen any sales for the new Marriott Bonvoy points. This works out to 1.25 cents per point. Again, I don't have the rate you've booked at, but divide the cash rate with the nightly points rate to get an idea what the value of your redemption is, and if that rate is higher than 1.25 cents per point, it might make sense to buy those extra points.

A few things to note: Points typically cover taxes, but not resort fees. And buying points from points .com using a CIP earns 3x UR (or at least did in the last DPs I've seen). Marriott members can purchase or receive as a gift a combined maximum of 50k points per calendar year through points .com, so its utility is somewhat limited. However, it should be possible for "DH" and "DD" to each buy 50k from points .com, and then once those points are in their Marriott accounts, call Marriott to transfer those points to your account. Note that Marriott limits transfers of points between accounts to 100k points per year, they have to call in to request the transfer, and Marriott charges a $10 fee for each transfer unless they have Gold or higher status (your DH's Platinum comes with complimentary Gold Elite status).

Both UR and MR points transfer to Marriott 1000:1000, so you could go that route to top off the points you still need.

I don't know how many UR points you have, so this may not be feasible, but have you looked at what it might cost to book the hotel through your CSR on the UR portal? Even at 3/24 (which is what you'll end up after going for the Bonvoy Brilliant), you can still go for the CIU and CIC for 50k UR SUB each, probably CIP #2 via referral for a net 100k UR bonus. You could also use these Chase Ink SUBs to cover whatever amount of Marriott points you still need.

Hope these ideas help.

I see the foundation is $250 and that brings it up to the Amex offer limit. Do you think the foundation part is not needed? Just use my old boxspring? Have no idea. Anyway, with the 10% off then it brings it down too far, figured I would add pillows to bring it back up. Either way, it puts it at @$1000 after all is said and done.

We used standard box springs when we first got it. We got rid of those after a year only because they were super old and squeaky. We got a box spring off Amazon after that. I don't think this is the exact one, but it's similar to THIS. I made sure that the slats were close enough together like the Casper website recommends. We've had that for about two years and I haven't noticed any issues. I haven't tried their pillows or sheets, but when DH was reselling on Amazon and Ebay a lot we could find Casper sheets suuuuper discounted at Target and flip them and make a lot of money haha. Not sure if Target still carries them.

I find them on the BA site. However, keep in mind BA releases award availability at 355 days out but JAL doesn’t until 330 so that could be a factor.

Apparently, JAL changed their booking window to 360 days out:
For those still interested in the "is Juicy Miles shady?" question, I just got an email from my booker giving me a heads up that JAL has changed its booking window from 330 days up to 360 days. This affects our booking timing and logistics. Just thought I'd give an example of Juicy Miles proactively reaching out to me upon hearing news that will affect our strategy.

You’ll probably want the mattress cover too, and their pillows are wonderful. Double check that the Chase Offer works in store, or only online. The Amex Offer works only online. The stores will match online codes and coupon mailers, but you’ll be missing out on Ebates, and Chase or Amex Offers if they exclude purchases in the showroom.

Don't forget to stack with a portal! 4% at Ebates, TopCashBack, and GivingAssistant. eta: sometimes the fine print says null and void if using a coupon code not on their portal site, but I consider it gravy on top of the 10% COZY code and 10% Chase offer (I don't have that one, but most of them have a max value to it).

I need to add my DD13 as an AU. Is there any reason to pick one card over another when adding kids? We have a Discover, CSP, AmEx Gold, and CapOne Venture as options.

Does the CSP still offer the 5k UR AU bonus?

Amex Gold for another person with Amex Offers. Amex Gold AUs are free, but Amex often offers MR bonuses for adding AUs so check for that.

Does it need special sheets? Is it an odd thickness or something? That might be a dealbreaker for me.

All the talk about mattresses has me looking. Our mattress just had its 24th birthday, right after our anniversary. We have both the Amex and chase Casper offers, but eek, they are expensive. Which is why our mattress is so old. I look at the prices and think it’s too much. I’m a cheap skate. I think our old one is still comfortable. My DH does not. But he likes firm and I like soft. We have tried a sleepnumbr at my sisters. She hated it so much she moved it to her guest room. We didn’t like it either. So it’s easier to keep the old one than agree on a new one. But I think it’s time very soon.

Ours is around 19 yrs old. A cheap mattress from Sams club but I've always found it comfortable. I'm starting to wake up with back pain now though, so it's probably time to move on. I'm afraid to commit though...

You could sign up for the two Amex Marriott cards - Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant and Marriott Bonvoy Business. Each has a 100K offer right now. Chase now has one card at 75K points but if you get the Amex, you can't get the Chase card and vice versa. You would be in good shape for points if you could get a player 2. Is DD old enough for a card?

Using your UR stash: 60K points needed for 1 night with cash for the night going up to $1300ish. That's 2 cents for each UR point. I'd do it.

There is also a Delta at 35K per night. If you are not planning on skiing on your travel day, it might be worth a few $$ to stay first night at Delta and check into Westin first thing in the morning, leave your stuff at bell services and hit the gondola from the hotel. They may not actually check you in but would probably take your stuff. Are you traveling with your own equipment or are you renting? Dragging all your stuff may be also worth paying the 60K for a non ski night.

We are traveling with our equipment -- 2 large suitcases, 2 boot/helmet bags and 1 large ski / snowboard bag :guilty:. We don't tend to travel light lol.

I will definitely apply for both cards.

Dh did get me Starwood AmEx (I'm an au on his card) years and years ago (the purple 'basic' one -- which gives us 1 35,000 night hotel / year, so it's a keeper). I'm not sure if he could even apply for the Bonvoy. I might be able to convince him in a few months to apply for something, but I'm not holding my breath.

So I assume your dates that say "19" really mean "18" ;) unless...you have a time machine...please tell me you have a time machine!! LOL (I kid :D)

Despite having an embarrassment of riches in Marriott points, I am actually not an expert in how to earn Marriott points in the "new world". All of my points came from multiple CC signups and a TON of support clicks from r/churning back in 2016-early 2018.

What is the property you are looking to stay at, what are your dates, how many rooms? If you're willing to share that, I'd like to take a look at it for you :) I would REALLY hesitate to transfer URs to Marriott as that is typically a bad move (but if I see your specific scenario, maybe it's not a bad idea).

EDIT: ok I’m dumb - I see the property. What are your dates though? Just one room? How many Marriott points do you currently have? How many URs? How many AMEX MRs (if any)?

No time machine lol!

Dates are December 26 - January 5 (this way getting 2 free nights over the course of the stay).

We have around 70,000 Marriott points currently. I have approx. 550,000 UR points and haven't been able to find a good use for them. I'm not sure how many MRs dh has -- he's a pain and once in a while (w/o consulting me), dumps them into Aeroplan despite me telling him I could find other uses for them.

Because it' over the Christmas / New Year holiday, room nights are in excess of $1,000.00 / night. We like the Westin as it's at the base of the gondola and has an oven, bar fridge, microwave, toaster, kettle and plates, cutlery, etc. Plus since it's built on the side of the mountain, it's in the village, but you don't have the noise of the village, which is a huge bonus as I'm a very, very light sleeper.

Flights I can do on Aeroplan miles as we have a plethora of those.

Can I just say that Machu Picchu would very likely have been less expensive, all expenses in.

Just to be clear, you’re only an AU on the basic SPG Amex? If so, that’s not a disqualifier for the Bonvoy Business or Bonvoy Brilliant. (1. You’re only an AU, not the primary cardmember. 2. The SPG Amex is in the same Amex “lane”, that is it’s not a Chase card. 3. The basic personal SPG Amex is considered a different product from the high-end Bonvoy Brilliant and the business Bonvoy Biz.)

What your DH could do to help is if you could use his Platinum to generate a universal referral link (assuming he hasn’t maxed out on referrals for the year), which you’ll use and click through the card options with referral offers, find the Bonvoy Biz, and apply via your DH’s referral. That’ll add a 15k Membership Rewards bonus to his Amex account, which he could transfer to his Marriott account and then onto your Marriott account (subject to Marriott’s 100k/yr. transfer cap).

Once you have the Bonvoy Biz, generate a referral link to refer yourself to the Bonvoy Brilliant when you’re ready and before the elevated offers end 4/24/19 for a 20k Marriott points bonus to your own Marriott account.
