Somewhat unrelated: I am completely out of touch with what travel costs!!

We are going to spend about 66 hours on the ground in Florida for this trip... Approx OOP costs without churning:
- $1,100 in flights
- $1,100 in hotel (3 nights)
- $1,100 in tickets (2 days)
- Food and some transportation additional
(These are approximates but funny how they all are roughly the same LOL).

So we have a $3,600+ trip on our hands!!

But I’m covering flights with a CP & RR pts and hotel and park tix with URs. Misc costs will be covered by some other misc cashback generated and so for me this trip costs nothing OOP. CRAZY! (And AWESOME!)

See, this is what I am looking at - and I've been avoiding any sort of trip that requires flying (specifically WDW... I am in Arizona) because "I can't afford it." Then I opened this thread and saw what you all were talking about and I was all :faint::worship:so the sooner I figure this out the quicker I CAN make that trip! But first... Japan!

Hey - any of my URs for Universal Hotels friends...

First off, it seems these are fully refundable so I might as well lock something in now for our trip and I can re-think it later if I want and switch...

Secondly, will Universal release any discounts for on-site stays? I've never researched that lol. I assume if they did, those discounts could make their way into the UR portal and I could re-book for a discount?

Not sure when you are traveling but I think it is a good idea to book early and change as needed. I have noticed that prices even fluctuate a bit in the UR portal for no reason that I can see.

Yes, Universal offer discounts sometimes. Right now they are offering a discount based on how long you stay. I have not seen that at all reflected in the UR portal. It just kind of bounces back between two rates for any number of days.

We booked through Loews this time. We are trying Endless Summer (we have a family of 6 and need a suite) and it is not at all bookable on UR for some reason. Maybe because it is not open yet? I booked this year through Lowes (Ebates cashback) and had been hoping for an AP discount but the current stay more save more rate was better. We will use our Barclay Artival+ credit to knock that out. We booked Cabana Bay last year and got a great value but it would just disappear from the portal sometimes while searching (this was before they switched it).

I know you are looking at EP hotels and I am less familiar with those. Just keep watching. Even the stay more save more prices have been fluctuating quite a bit. I have canceled and rebooked once already but keep watching just in case!

They might have AP discounts but those won’t show.

They could have length of stay discounts but those are typically 3 nights or more. And I believe you are only doing 2 nights?
(Oops, I see you are doing 3 nights.)

They may have some other discounts that aren’t released yet. It doesn’t hurt to keep checking :)

And yes, they are fully refundable up until x # of days before the visit. I had booked a couple of options initially for our June trip.

I've been booking UO hotels with the AP discount, and our upcoming stay is approx 25%off. I can't remember if you have the CSP or CSR but it might be worth it to book the discounted rate and cashing out UR's and putting the room towards an msr. I'm sure you can do the math on that :) the AP isn't required to book beforehand either. There's a thread on the universal board with a link to book ap rooms.

Also I wanted to point out that last year we upgraded our 3 day park to park tickets to seasonal AP's for free for the adults, $10 each for the kiddos. So our admission this year is free! Definitely worth checking into even if you're not sure you'll be back in a year.

Or to seriously write down the cost of a trip! My upcoming Barcelona - Europe trip/cruise has a value of around $9k for the cruise, the flights, the 3 nights hotel and all port excursions, etc.

I went ahead and paid cash for the cruise (a balcony room) for $3,500. I used points for the rest including all those port excursions and stuff to do in Barcelona! Spending nearly 2 weeks in Europe for $3,500 is a steal to me. And yes, I could have cashed out my MRs and not paid anything for the cruise - but I am saving them for a big trip in 2021!

Tonight was our last night in Tokyo. I wish we had more days in Tokyo but we have other places to be. Tomorrow morning we’re going to hakone for one night and then off to Kyoto for 6 nights.

Kyoto is my big bucket list dream. Maybe someday. Pass by the Nintendo building while you're there. It looks like any other plain giant corporate building.

We are staying 3 nights :) (our “66 hours on the ground” includes 3x8 hours of sleep LOL!)

I didn't see any discounts come up for our trip last Sept when I booked RPR through the UR portal, other than AP, but that was a 'low' time even though it was the beginning of Halloween Horror Nights. I know the AP discount wasn't enough for me to switch from booking with URs to cashing them out to pay for the AP rate at that time. But they are refundable and I swapped ours around a lot... I think we did the first night at Cabana Bay because we got in late so it was cheap, then a night at RPR with Hotels.com GCs, then a night at RPR with URs. It was easy to switch overall, we did move our luggage ourselves to RPR. We also had to get new keys at RPR for the second night mainly because they work as your EP but we just stopped at the desk when we got back from the parks that night.
Knowing how many people actually pay OOP for this makes it more crazy and awesome :D
Yes! When I was creeping on DHs family's trip, the cousin and family I talked about the other day, easy Disney math tells me they're spending around $200 a night for Caribbean Beach all in. Now that may not be bad, but I'm out of touch with that as I have never paid fully OOP for a Disney trip... URs, discounted Disney or Hotels.com GCs, Swolphin, Arrival/Arrival Plus Credits, CSR credits... But they have two rooms and 6 nights and I'm just like, but think of all the other things I could spend on if I'm not spending $2400 on hotel rooms!

You’re the first person that’s even mentioned a Nintendo building in Kyoto lol. I’m not sure we’ll have time but if we do I’ll try to find it

If I missed this conversation yesterday, I apologize. This week has been something else for me. But for @Albort and others who buy iTunes giftcards to sell... you might want to liquidate fast. iTues is going away according to Bloomberg.

https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/apple-is-finally-killing-itunes-842750/

What does this mean for people who use iTunes on the computer? Is that going away because I use that a lot

From what I understand (and this has been rumored for some time, but just becoming official with Apple’s WWDC starting next week), Apple is killing “iTunes” as an app that’s kind of become a bloated hub for movies, tv, music, managing and backing up iOS devices, and all their other services over the years, and splitting up their services into different apps. Apple now makes more money off services than hardware, and this trend is only increasing with slowing sales of their previous #1 driver iPhones. No way is Apple going to get rid of their store or gift cards to that store; they’ll just rebrand it into a separate thing.

Since there is no way I am going to catch up on 9 or 10 days of posts, I just read that wonderful discussion thread on reddit and am starting here. Ha!

So wanted to share info from our trip. We had a great time. No flight delays...yay! Even with 9 people some of the days, we did all FP+ and never waited in a standby line. The first 2 days were great....not crowded in walkways and resort pool very pleasant. Then on Saturday the flood gates opened. Saturday thru Thurs when we left were packed.

We stayed at Poly. I used DDs CM discount and covered the cost with discounted gift cards. I am going to cash out all my URs to cover the gift cards. I paid for food with a Disney rewards card I had with referral money on it. The rest went on my Arrival+ towards MSR but that wasn't much. I upgraded the boys to APs and that went on the arrival+ as well. Most cash out of pocket will be covered by URs and flights were on SW points.

Poly-well, I won't be rushing back there anytime soon. The grounds are really lovely, of course, and I love the theming. The rooms, though spacious, are subpar. The bathroom was 100% better than my last stay there (pre Reno) but the sink being in the shower/toilet room is annoying with a family. We were in Aotearoa on the 3rd floor and got our requested balcony, and the view I wanted (but didn't request) of the monorail. It was convenient to the main building and pools. The halls and the elevator was just completely embarrassing for the prices at this resort. What are they thinking? The rooms aren't much better. I'm not sure what it was, but it just didn't feel fresh and clean at all. It was dark, spots on the carpet, and just felt like an older Hampton Inn that was in need of renovation. I will admit I have high standards for hotel rooms. I always look for new hotels or newly renovated when traveling outside WDW. I'm also spoiled by several years in a row of cruising DCL and the ships are impeccable. Unfortunately it doesn't end at aesthetics. I thought I was paying for convenience. Well, the ONLY thing that was convenient about transport at the poly is going TO the MK. Everything else took forever. Epcot you get double security. Leaving MK, the resort monorail loop REALLY needs to require band scanning so it can actually be a perk of those paying for the "luxury" b/c right now it takes forever to get back with so many people riding it to the TTC at park close. My parents got back to CSR faster than I got back to poly from the parks...that sums it up. I ended up taking Minnnie Vans quite a few times.
The food setup...awful. If you want to buy a water or another quick grab item, you wait in line behind all the families who can't decide what they want to order for lunch just so you can pay. I've not seen that at any other resort...ordering and paying are usually separate...and it NEEDS TO BE!!
I did have issues with the laundry machines and a very nice CM came to my rescue and allowed me to use the DVC laundry room. Those buildings are SO. MUCH. NICER. Just changing up the coloring in the hallways makes it feel so new, fresh, and modern. He said they are in the beginning stages of planning renovations and he was a higher up, so he probably knows what he was talking about. If I were to stay at poly again, I'd do a DVC room instead of a village room, hands down, but I'd only do it for a MK heavy trip due to transportation frustrations.
Another compliment I have is that they let me stay in the room til 1pm on checkout day. We had a 9pm flight, so that was nice. Also, mousekeeping was on point! The nice lady came when we were out each time, no matter what time of day. We were never disturbed and we never came back (even from breakfast) to an unmade room. That was great since I often miss mousekeeping due to afternoon naps at other resorts.

Dining- we didn't do many sit down meals, b/c I find most are a rip off, esp now that DD11 is an "adult" and eats nothing. We did 'Ohana breakfast since it was convenient and DD gets a discount. It was fine if you are paying to see characters, but the food was lousy. We did Chef Mickey's our last morning b/c we hadn't met any other characters all week, except Ohana. We did Homecomin' brunch and it was delicious! DD chose Tutto Italia for her bday meal and it was tasty. Tutto we booked a week ahead for a party of 9 at prime dinner hours. We also did beaches n cream one night when we had just had a resort day and wanted to get out for a bit. The rest was counter service. I wanted to mention that I booked all except Tutto on the fly. I saw every single restaurant with availability during our trip by checking in the day prior and day of for reservations...and this was a holiday weekend. I just don't like to be tied to any certain plans ahead of time, and waiting til I know when and where I want to go seems to work fine since everything opens up as people cancel. My point is...don't worry about booking 6 months out. My dad (hasn't been to wdw for 15 years) kept saying how good of quality all the meals were...even counter service. I admit, we did have good meals.

Well thats my review. I'm def still a Yacht/Beach girl...more Yacht now that the rooms are so new. I also will likely try Swolphin at some point since the location is the same and it is easy to find in the $120 range.

ETA: DD did the audition for entertainment and was an inch too tall. She found when she got there it was only for mouse, not the face characters in that height range, unfortunately. Oh well, will try again!
Oh! And DS9 made the top tier hockey team for his age bracket in Nashville. So proud of him!

I'm going to Japan in November and sounds like there's other planning to go as well. Is there a separate thread just for Japan planning with people from this thread? (I joined Disboards a while ago but I just started using it more lately)

Think I may have a plan to go forward at least for the next few months with a Hawaii trip in mind. Probably going to get the Amex Hilton Bus-going to apply for it in the next couple of days (would tonight but went to a fish fry and had a couple old fashions and want my mind to be on top of it for the app)... followed by hopefully another CIP, the amex spend will likely be enough to postpone the app until after the 1 year anniversary of my first CIP, so plan to close the first one and then open another one. Followed by Amex hilton aspire, this card will take me to 4/24, and is really only worth it to me if I do go ahead with the Hawaii trip, given the AF and perks-as I typically wouldn't use the airline fee credit and Hilton resort credit, etc. So want plans solidified before I go ahead and get the aspire.

Dates not set yet, and who knows if the trip will happen, but always fun to be in the planning stages and I'm fairly certain Hawaii will be in the cards in the next couple of years at least. Flights likely on United, nonstop to OGG, inter-island flight using SW to HNL, and nonstop back from HNL. Can top off my united points with UR transfer, ideally I would like to book first class on the red-eye home, won't likely be able to use points for that (as no saver awards currently), other than UR if the cost drops, so I'll continue watching the flight cost and if it drops consider booking it.

Hotels mainly hilton (using newly acquired points), marriott reward certs, hyatt (transfer from UR), and probs a cash stay at aulani (vs. rental with davids). Would try to earn as many UR's to cash out to help with other cash outlay-rental cars, aulani, first class flights, fees, etc.

This plan will likely take a solid 5-6 months, if not longer, with MSR of 3k, 5k, and 4k with two of those being amex. As most of my large bills are either in the first part or last part of the year. At the end would likely need to start booking some of the travel to meet the spends. Even if I don't end up going to hawaii, hilton is the right way forward, as I'm tapped out of marriott after using all of my points on my last trip and I'm locked out of sign out bonuses at this time. After making it through those three cards would need to consider retrying graavy train. Plan above keeps me at 4/24, so I would have room for another chase bus and/or chase personal card if the sign up bonus is very lucrative. Another card doesn't drop off until 1/2020, so need to be careful with personal cards to keep my options open.
Reading other people's plans is SO helpful for me! Thank you for sharing the details :)
