I got a new dc for Christmas.

We went with the Canon SD600 because of the cost and how compact it was.

I was disappointed at first b/c it came with it's own battery!

All I could think of was:

What the heck am I going to do when the batter runs out??
Will I have to purchase a second back-up battery to carry around?
How much is that going to cost now??

Well, I didn't purchase another one after reading here on the DIS how well Canon batteries hold up.

Right before we left for WDW I charged the battery overnight. We went to WDW for 8 days and I took over 700 pictures, and some video. I turned the camera on and off and off and on over and over.

I viewed the pictures many times, deleting the bad ones. Watched the little video.

I NEVER charged the battery once!!!

This camera will save me so much $$ over the long run with batteries! On our last trips I would have to replace batteries at least once a day, sometimes two.

Love, love, LOVE my new canon camera

WOW - that is FANTASTIC..... almost as fantastic as the Buckeyes.

GO BUCKS! ;)

I found that the battery in my Canon Rebel XT lasts very well also! I have two and switch them nightly just to rotate them but unless I am using the stobe, they seem to last much better than my compact camera (using AA rechargables).

By the way, rechargable batteries and a good charger are a good way to save quite a lot of dollars! It's also a good way to save land fill space chemicals in the environment. This was brought home when I traveled to an island where they have no easy way to get rid of batteries. They ask everyone to carry the spent ones back home.

I am guessing that you did not use rechargeable AAs. For extra rechargeable batteries, the AAs are somewhat cheaper ($10 vs. $30-50) and are available everywhere. It is usually good to have an extra set with you.

I wonder which one uses less power to do the charge? That would be reflected on your power bill. I am guessing that it would be so small that it would not matter, but would be interesting to know.

We bought a Canon SD630 last night and an extra battery at Best Buy. The extra is compatible, but not a Canon battery. It is a brand called Digipower. Should I return it and get a Canon battery?

No, don't return it. There are only a few battery makers. Canon buys from one of them and puts their name on it. I bought and extra from Duracell and get similar results from it as I do the original battery from Canon.

All batteries are not the same, some are good, some not so good. It is true that there are not many OEM battery suppliers but the packs are assembled to the manufacturer's specifications, which can vary quite a lot.
I recently took apart an older Canon BP-511 that no longer held a charge (it is from 2001) and it has A&TB batteries (previously Toshiba). It also has a circuit board to monitor charge, discharge, temperature, and who knows what else.

I use Canon batteries because I know they have a fair level of protection. Other brands may or may not. The problem is there is no way to tell without taking them apart. To me, the extra (ok, a lot extra) $$$ for the Canon battery is insurance.

I had bought rechargable, two different kinds, two different chargers, but they just never seemed to work well either. So while at WDW we just used disposable, didn't want to take that risk ;)

We've been running a $6 eBay battery in my wife's SD600 for a few weeks now without it having run down.

I'm guessing that it doesn't last as long as the "real" battery, but it lasts plenty long, and makes a perfectly good backup. If you can charge the batteries at night, it's unlike that you'd need anything more.

If we were in a situation where we couldn't charge them and needed more, I'd just buy more cheap ones rather than spend the big bucks on a genuine one.
