I lost my Magic Band...twice.

We just returned from our trip and my son lost his magic band several times. We have been on several other trips with the old bands and never had a problem. I feel like the new style doesn't stay on as well. Thankfully I had our old ones with us so he just changed over to one of those.

The band's are very secure as long as you do not rub the leading edge against anything that might catch it, like taking off a backpack. Hundreds of days with these band's, every style, and no lost band's in our group, but we have had a few pop off when rubbed wrong so we have learned what to avoid.

In short, it isn't the bands, it is us.

I think the new ones are not as secure. In our two previous trips we never had one pop off but this time both DD7 and I had our magic band get lightly snagged and pop off.

I think you're right, last trip I had the previous style ones and I nearly lost my band a couple times. Both times, I was putting my backpack on. Later in the trip I swapped to a smaller, crossover style purse and it wasn't a problem anymore. This time I'm taking those bit belts others have mentioned just to keep them on me since I'm so clumsy.

My 1st trip with kids in 2014 and my then 3 (almost 4) year old lost his twice. He was none too happy that the replacements were just grey and not green like his original. Guest services were great about it. We've been 2 more times since then and he hasn't lost it.

OP again!

It may very well be my (or our fault...as it appears I am not alone!) fault and not the design of the band. I really do feel like they pop off more easily than the old ones, and I just wanted to warn people to be vigilant, and to let them know that Guest Services is great, should anyone have a snafu.

We have only lost one so far. My kid lost his in January somewhere around Winnie the Poo. We reported it lost in MDE App and had him wear a different one. Thank goodness we had extras with us.

The only time my band has ever come into question is when I was rubbing my wrist against something without realizing it and it would just catch and undo the band. It happens.. I can see parents carrying children having it possibly happen the most as well as someone who has something on their wrist so they use the other arm.

The new magic bands seem less secure than the old ones. They are good about replacing them, but if you've customized it then they can't help you with that on short notice.

That's probably true, but kids are wearing the bands and they're going to be active and not careful about not rubbing the leading edge against anything that might catch it. Same for adults who are juggling kids, bags, strollers, etc. The bands are meant to be worn in active, busy places. There are many places to catch it on things in the parks and pools and water parks and avoiding those situations doesn't seem feasible.

Love the new bands. We just got back from 10 nights there and never had any issues with them. IMO, they hold even better than the older version as they are more supple. The grips are just as tight as the old ones, but they are much more comfortable to wear - we would forget about them as they fit our wrists more snugly.

The only way they would/could pop off is if you caught the end on something and it pulled apart, but that is understandable. I don't bang my watch on anything, and the MB was treated the same - not a conscious effort.

I haven't used a new one yet but I've read many reports of people losing these that didn't have problems with losing the old ones.

I agree that the new bands are not as secure. Mine popped off twice but I found them by going back to the ride. Luckily both times it was picked up by a CM and as long as I could tell them my name (which is unique) and the color they gave it right back to me. I also had the magic bits fall off of the new ones. My son does not like to wear a watch or anything so he got the caribiner (sp?) belt hook and that worked out great. I probably will be doing the same thing in June.

They did replace DS but only offered grey and he wasn't happy.

I think the bigger concern is many have specialty MB (we each have several each and change them around), some adorn with Bandits (which they won't replace) and some of us have special sliders like AP/DVC which can be very difficult to replace ... I know my old AP sliders look different than new ones. It's all those things we don't want to lose.
We must have gotten lucky, they replaced dd's purple band with another purple band. We're leaving in two days, or I would try to get something to secure them better. Oh well, we have plenty of hair ties if we need them!

I've gone using a magic band 6 times and never once did i lose it or have it feel at all unsecure on my wrist.
In fact its usually kinda hard to get it off at the end of the day.
I think many times people don't make sure that the pegs are fully into the holes. Just my thought though.

I would have thought that prior to our experience too. After the first two times it popped off I was watching closer and it was nothing dd did. She's also 17, so not a young child who wriggles around a lot. Out of several trips with magic bands, most with extended family with us, (up to 18 people!) we've never had that experience either, until last year.

I bought one of the cloth sleeves for the old type band mainly for comfort on hot days but it had the added benefit of covering the clasp so it didn't catch on anything. I had to get creative to use it on the new band but it actually secures the band better. I have seen people losing bands occasionally but so far, so good.

I don't wear mine - I loop around the strap of my small cross-body purse. It would annoy me to wear it. DH kept his in a pocket the last time we went.

Something as simple as a rubber band wrapped around several times will work if you don't have anything else. You would put the rubber band on securely on the side without the pegs, then after snapping the strap closed roll the rubber band over the "tail" of the magic band to secure it in place. Obviously there are more elegant solutions like the fit belt, but rubber bands are widely available.
