Did anyone ever throw a Mardi Gras party? I would like to have one the weekend before Fat Tues. in Feb. What did you serve to eat? What decorations did you use? Where did you find paper produtcs etc.

I have never been to Mardi Gras so am definately "throw bead" challenged... BUT, I thought it might be fun to liven up the winter a bit~

Thanks!!

Do you have a party store near you? They should have the stuff......I live in South Louisiana.....

colors of MG are purple, green and gold. Foods I am thinking mufeletta (sp?)sandwiches, red beans and rice, jambalaya, gumbo, things like that, traditional New Orleans foods.

one of the retirees where i worked had a mardi gras themed retirement party.

they got all the decorations through oriental trading company,

food-jambalaya, red beans and rice, gumbo, some bbq, and lots of sweet treats.

for dessert they contacted a bakery in new orleans and were able to order the plastic items and decoration instructions for the 'king cakes'-they took them to a local grocery store type bakery who made standard sheet cakes but used the other store's instructions/decorations.

for background music they got some cd's of preservation hall jazz band-it was great!

I have been to one and it was so much fun. They served jambalaya, and mufalleta sandwiches. They also had a special drink, I think it was called a "hurricane" They also had king cake, which is a cake with a glaze on it and there was a plastic figurine tof a baby hat gets baked into the cake and whoever gets it in their piece of cake is supposed to have good luck. I think they ordered the cake from a N.O. bakery.

Thanks for all the help so far:jester: Were their homes decorated a certain way?

I just moved back home to VA after living on South Louisiana for 4 years and lots of peeps leave their Cmas tree up, but decorate it with green, gold & purple beads, balls, etc. It's a LOT of fun and the trees are very pretty :)

don't forget the king cakes and moon pies :)

The one I went to was decorated with the typical Mardi Gras "stuff," the masks, beads everywhere, streamers etc. SHe got all the stuff at a party store. She also had New Orleans music playing in the background. It was so festive and everyone said it was just what they needed in the middle of winter.

OH MY! I love that idea!We have an artificial tree so it's definately doable!

I have never thrown one but I have attended a few. I always make and bring the King Cake.

I actually look forward to planning a New Orleans party then a Christmas party. Go to a craft or party store and stock up on beads, mardi gras masks, some ladies fans and some things in the colors of Mardi Gras. For food, you can make some gumbo or jambalaya (or both!), maybe some crawfish and for a small dessert you can have beigenets (sp?) Also, don't forget the king's cake! If you want any recipes just pm me. Oh, and last but not lost get some rollicking jazz, blues and zydeco music. Have fun! Also, as one poster said keep the tree up, maybe you can adorn it with some mardi gras beads (like tinsel) if you want

Thank you all sooo much! I am getting psyched already :woohoo:! Any other ideas or suggestions please share! Thanks again!
