I am doing my first half marathon ever - the Wine & Dine. I would really like to know if it would be possible to do the full in January?

I've been training regularly for the 1/2. I have a 10K coming up at the end of August which I should be able to run in full because I am up to 4.5 miles now.

This morning I also went for an 11 mile walk, just to get a guage on my - hopefully - worst case scenario for the 1/2 if I ended up having to walk, finished in 2hrs 49 min (15.25 min/mile).

Advice, opinions?

Assuming you put in the necessary training in months between the events, I'd say it is definitely doable.

Yes! I ran my first half in september (disneyland) and then signed up for GOOFY when I got home!! Be sure to train well and you can definitely do it :)

I think with a good training plan, and it looks like you are doing well with that, you can do it!!

I also agree, you are making huge strides and you have a great grip on the possible of having to walk. Which means you will train smart and listen to your body on the day of the full you will finish!!

Remember it does not matter if you walk or run, it is all about being brave enough to sign up and follow through and cross that finish line :love:

CONGRATS!!!!

Forget about the October run for a second and look at a marathon training plan. If the plan looks like something you can do to be ready for a January full marathon then I think you can also do the W&D. Many marathon training plans for a January race would have you running the distance of a half (or at least close to a half) as you long run most weeks in October. If you move around some day in the plan and let the Wine & Dine act as that week's long run than there is no reason you can't do it.

I do want to caution you though. My first half marathon was in January of 2006 and when I was done I signed up for two more. One in April and another 5 weeks later in May. Well, it was overly ambitious and I ended up with an over use injury. Nothing permanent or even that bad really but it set me back at least a month. I am not trying to talk you out of it or anything like that, and as you pointed out everyone is different, I just don't want you to decide to do both because you want to without really thinking about if you can or should.

If the plan looks like something you can do I would still wait to sign up until after the Wine & Dine. Keep an eye on the % full but I doubt the full will be closed out before mid October. You can train for the full and run the Wine & Dine. If a week after the half you feel alright and are confident you can continue on with the plan for the January race then sign up.

Good luck.

Thanks for the tips and advice. I was planning on waiting until after the Wine & Dine to make a decision to sign up, seeing how I feel.

I am surprisingly not very sore after the 11 mile walk yesterday, just a little bit in a couple spots but nothing near what I thought I might be. I'm letting my legs rest - I always take 2 full rest days a week, run 3 days and the other day I alternate between full body workout and upper body only.

I'm going to be the naysayer here and say no way.

Marathon training is a LOT harder than 10k or even HM training.

Make 2012 your goal race.

I think that if you were to start and follow a good strong marathon plan this week such as Galloway or Marathon for mortals you can get to the line and should finish. Like FireDancer indicated you will need to make the full your A race and just run the W&D.

I would not wait until after the W&D to decide. That could be a pathway to failure.

Yeah, but Galloway's plan for marathon walk/run is 32 weeks. If the OP starts on week 3 (5 mile LR, which it sounds like they aren't at yet), that puts it at 30 weeks, or the middle of March.

Hmm, thanks all. Definatly have to give it some more thought. I run 5 to 5.5 miles 3x a week currently, and will be up to a 10k in 3 weeks by following my current training plan.

I have the book Marathoning for Mortals and will have to give one of the walk/run - run/walk marathon plans a look over, and possibly come back for more advice.

Keep it coming :)

Yea you can do it. If you look at most marathon plans, you're probably pretty close to the distances you want to be at.

It'll probably serve you very well to do a half marathon prior to the full, so this way you get to know what works and what doesnt work. Just like going from a 5k to a 10k requires some tweaking, and a 10k to a half marathon requires more tweaking, the half marathon to the full is the same way.

I'm with Charles and Frank- I'd wait to sign up until after the Wine and Dine, but I'd start training for the full now and see if you can make the Wine and Dine your long training run that week. I would definitely try to do some sort of walking in there to help avoid injury.

Another option if you just love Disney races and have the time available is to do the Wine and Dine and then come back in February for the Princess Half- it's a lot of fun and you get to run through the Castle (unless they've changed). Then next year you could build up to the full or Goofy.

To give you some reference, I did the Goofy in 2007. I started running in 2006 and did follow a training plan but was pretty beat up by the end. I wouldn't change it and love my Goofy medal, but it wasn't a smart approach. I've done 4 or 5 half marathons since, my LR is about 10-12 miles right now, and I still can't convince myself to sign up for a full this winter :rolleyes1

Good luck with your decision and have a great time at the Wine and Dine!

Absolutely, you can do it!!! Look at MfM full plan. Make training line up so W&D lines up with the 12 or 14-miler. (Looks liek you will have to start part-way into the plan, as teh 12-miler for teh full is due fro 10/23. Sounds like you are already more than capable, though. Then, double up a few weeks in teh middle until you are back on track with MfM. Like teh otehrs said, though, make sure W&Di sa training run/walk/combo, not a race. So good to see you!!!! (I'm PoohsPal from MO and a scarper if you don't recognize me) PM me if you want any help with a schedule.

You can definitely do it! The training plan I used for my first marathon has us do our first 13 mile long run as a half marathon race over Labor Day weekend. The marathon was two months later in early November. That's pretty much the same time frame you're looking at, so I think you can do it. I'd sign up sooner rather than later so you can get yourself a plan you can live with and start using it as much as you can now.

I think you can do it!

My first full was at WDW in Jan, 2008. I didn't start training until late August of 2007 although I had completed two half-marathons by that time - one in Jan. 2007 & the other one in April, 2007. I really didn't train or walk/run much during the summer. During that fall training period, I entered several half-marathons. I think that really helped prepare me for the full. You might consider doing something like that if you can. I just treated these halfs like another long run, sometimes adding a few miles. The beauty is that the courses were supported and I didn't have to furnish my own water or food. :teeth:

Good luck! Let us know what you decide.

Well I have been giving it a lot of thought and I think I could do it - based on a walk/run training program in the Marathon for Mortals book. I could easily start out at week 5 and continue to week 20 to just before the marathon.

However I think I will wait until 2012 for a couple of reasons. The biggest is I don't want to try to do too much too quickly. But I'd also like to earn the different Disney medals and to do the coast to coast challenge. I figure I can do the Princess 1/2 & the DL 1/2, get the special bonus medal and get those three framed.

Then in 2012 do the Goofy and have those three medals framed as well. No duplicate medals in the frames. And it will give me an opportunity to do some other 1/2 marathons around without putting too much strain and stress on my body, help keep me motivated and make sure I am fully prepared for the Goofy challenge.

I really appreciate all the advice from everyone and it's wonderful to hear the stories on when the first marathons were ran by you all.

So now that this new idea has debuted in my head, what would you experienced folks think about this plan? Good, better, bad?

Carrie -
Yup I remember you :)

cobbler, that sounds like a good plan! Although, you've got to have serious guts to do the Goofy. I'm always exhausted the day after race day, can't imagine doing a marathon after a half, or vice versa.

I think your plan sounds great. I just started running this year - I did the Princess Half in March, I am doing the Disneyland Half in September and the WDW Marathon. I follow Hal Higdon's plans and they are very doable. Am I going to finish first in my age group? Heck no but I will finish. The hardest part about considering the full is just the fact that when you are training for the 1/2, 10 miles seems like a big deal and then you look at the Marathon plan and learn that at a certain point, that is considered an easy run!

I would start training for it regardless because you never know if you may change your mind after the Wine & Dine! I thought I was going to be done with the Disneyland Half...but then that medal for the WDW Marathon lured me back in! Regardless, Good Luck! I am sure you will do great.

Quick question for those of you that have done the goofy or even the marathon. Since I'll be giving myself about 14 months to train, what kind of plan do you follow. Most will have me finished long before the marathon. So what do you do after to maintain, do you just start the program over or what?
