Meant to respond to this thread sooner, but it got moved and I forgot about it!
Glad to hear my suggestion might be useful (or at least, was well received, lol). It's the only way I could quickly think of handling it. I had my own children in mind while masterminding that plan, lol. Sadly, I had to tell my kids YEARS ago that the characters are just people in costumes, because otherwise they were scared to death of them.
The same isn't true of Santa, etc., because I've never had my kids get up close to these characters at the mall (they don't want to get close, so we just admire them from afar, lol). As a result, my two youngest still believe.
I remember telling my oldest son about Santa, though. He was 11! We had been homeschooling since he was 8, so he'd never heard the "news" about Santa at school. In the beginning of 6th Grade, he wanted to go back to public school. I was SO torn, because I didn't want him to accidentally say something about Santa, and get completely ridiculed and laughed at from fellow students his age, but I didn't want to ruin the fun for him, either. In the end, I felt I had to tell him the truth. His eyes glistened with tears for about a minute, but he sucked it up, lol.
And then, after one day, he remembered why he hated public school so much to begin with, and went back to homeschooling. I ruined his Santa fun for nothing!

Then again, if I had let him believe it much longer, he'd probably be writing a book about me now (and not a flattering one, either!)...HAHAHA!
