I Just Wanted To Be Athletic - And Now, I Am! (comments welcome)

Stacy, you know I agree with you about how Minnie should have been there - did you hear that comment that "This Minnie needs to be at...what was it - the Magic Kingdom opening? I think that's what it was - but she'll be back for the awards ceremony?" Well, I think "This Minnie" was probably the wrong thing to call her. Obviously they have more than one, but are they really supposed to let on?

My camera: It is small and waterproof and shockproof, and I can run with it in one hand or in a little pouch on my belt, but the pictures from this particular camera (It's an olympus) never seem to turn out that great, but I appreciate the indestructability of the camera in the race. I still like having them, even when they don't turn out the best, though - they help me remember. The race went by so quickly, it's nice to be able to look back.

I hear ya. And i think maybe i will end up buying my dd a camera this summer - her first digi and then i can "borrow" it for the race. ;)

I am also thinking i am gonna sign up my dd today for one of the kids races -- since they don't start til 8:30 and they are the Sat. a.m. -- she would love to get a medal and tshirt.. and the kids are only 10.00 to register..

Ah, Disney. The kids races were $5 for the Minnie....my kids really enjoyed them and the medals are pretty darned cute. I can't believe they are doubling the price next year. Still affordable, but what a hike!

Geez, i didn't realize that they were only $5 this time!! My dd didn't do it - so here i am thinking $10 is a bargin.. LOL I guess after the $120 Princess fee i thought that $10 was a drop in the bucket.. LOL

Oh yeah - next to most things at WDW, it's a drop in the bucket! That registration fee is a high one. Do they really ask you who your favorite princess is? And what did you say? I wonder why they want to know that. Maybe they are making personalized bibs with names and princess of choice. Who knows.

Yes, they do ask that.. i said Cindy - since to me she is the "classic" princess, and one i grew up on.. Don't know why they want to know.. ?? I am trying to figure out how the heck i am gonna train for this thing though!

Hey C!!

GREAT report and nice shot of my hair. Not bad for a 5am hairdo. I really appreciate you bringing your camera along. Helped me relive it all over again, and I love your sense of humor.

I wouldn't have run the race any other way and I loved every minute. (Sorry again for taking off at the very end....I couldn't let DBIL beat me. ;) )

Thanks again! I can't wait to hear all about the 15k and why you should have gone to the medical tent. Hopefully you're better now. :goodvibes

Stacy - It's too hard to choose a favorite princess - I'm proud of you for biting the bullet and picking one. That's the kind of thing that would have me delaying registering for days.

And now some free advice: For now, don't worry too much about training for the 1/2 marathon. You have a good amount of time to shop around for a training program you feel good about. There are some free ones online (coolrunning.com, runnersworld.com) you can also purchase one online - they have them at Active.com and Bingham's website and lots of others. And then there are books - check out the library or browse in the bookstore.

For now (and this is me doling out advice, not because I'm so experieced but because it's my journal and I am an information glutton) you can work on building up your base mileage - add a little to each run and/or make your long run a little longer. Do you have a long run at this point? They say not to increase by more thad 10% at a time per run and per week. So if you're running 30 minutes, add no more than 3 minutes per run that week. Another option would be to find a training program for a 10K and follow that, if you want more structure. Most training programs have a point you should be at before you start - the next few months should be about making sure you're comfortably at that point before you start your serious 1/2 marathon training plan.

No, no, no - don't appologise - that's what you're supposed to do at the end. Well, unless you have a pact to cross the finish together for some reason, I guess, and we definitely didn't have that. I wasn't going to go all out at any point in the 5K, as you know, but I'm glad you beat your BIL in the end - pretty cool! I took off on Kate at the end of ToT, for what that's worth to ya'.

And I'm so glad I did the 5K - it really pushed the weekend right over the edge to unbelievably amazing. Seems like the races I get talked into by my C25K buddies are the best ones. Maybe I ought to let Stacy talk me into the Princess 1/2...

Thanks so much corinna!! That's kinda what i was going to do -- i don't have a long run day yet, so i was going to start building one and increasing my weekly miles...
I will look into the 10k plans too -
Thanks!!

Oh, and check out Marathoning for Mortals - there are lots of plans in that book, and Bingham really makes a person feel like the marathon or 1/2 marathon is within reach.

I gotta say, I really like the finish line pic. I think that is REALLY cool!

Kim - I agree with you, that finish line photo was an unexpected cool thing. I am pretty sure I was going for a different shot - I couldn't have gotten that one if I'd been trying to, but I like how it's the wish shirt and you can read FINISH.

Hey guys - I'm a lurker on several threads that talk about running and Disney (I especially love it when it's about running in Disney!). Anyway, I just stumbled on this thread and noticed the reference to Bingham's book. I read it last year while training for my first (and potentially last) marathon - it was very good. But I have to add that if any of you are seriously considering training for a marathon, you must get this book:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1580052053

It is fabulous. It's called "The Non-runner's Guide to Running a Marathon for Women", or something like that. It is really the funniest book I've ever read. I read it slowly, as I wanted to finish it right before my race, but I always made sure to read it in the tub during ice baths after long runs. :scared1: :rotfl:

Seriously, I hope some of you get it, even if you're not training for a full marathon - if you are into running at all, you'll love it.

Good luck!

Leslie

Hi Leslie - thanks for stopping by and saying hello. I think....did you maybe pop in on the C25K thread once or twice with helpful hints?

I will definitely check out that book - I don't think any of us can wrap our brains around a full marathon yet, but maybe, possibly someday. Thanks for the suggestion!

Hi corinna :goodvibes

Just wanted to stop by and say it was so great to meet you at the Minnie weekend! I loved hanging out by you as we cheered on our fellow wishers. It was also lovely to meet your adorable boys! I think you were such a trooper out there fighting thru the injuries. I was really proud of you knowing what you were going through during the races! Take some time to rest your body and heal those injuries!!!

Just popping in, trying to catch up with everyone's RR and experiences. Sounds like a fun time, and the pics prove it! :cool1:

So, when last I wrote, we had found Kim's time, not found mine and before you know it, the last 5K finisher was crossing the finish line! And it was time to claim my bag and time for Kim to go on to her water park adventure. That was when we got trapped in the large pen in the middle of the parking lot. The lady closed the gap and told us we'd have to go all the way around. Evidently 5K was not enough. Before she left, Kim told me that going to Animal Kingdom for the day was not resting up for the 15K. :teacher: Keeping me real again!

I got my bag and headed off to the front of Epcot to change into fresh clothes and catch a bus to Epcot. Had to go through security if you wanted to go to those bathrooms closest to the parking lot, though. I opted for the ones outside of "security" closer to the busses. It is questionable, I know, but I cleaned myself up with about 7 baby wipes, put on fresh clothes, fresh deoderant and headed out to meet my family at Animal Kingdom. A shower would have been better, I know, but the plan was to get Andrew a ride on Everest first thing, and for that to happen, someone had to stay with the kids - one of whom is too short and the other of whom is too scared of the big, steep drop. :confused3

I caught a bus with a bunch of other people from the Minnie and got to Animal Kingdom right around park opening. I walked about 15 paces into the Oasis and remembered what I said to myself about just getting over myself and doing what I had to do. And as Kim says, walking around the parks isn't actually resting. So, since my feet were already tired and my pinkie toes were hurting, I guiltily walked back and rented myself.....an ECV. It struck me as ridiculous and wrong to rent a motorized scooter to protect my chances of finishing the 15K the next day, but I had been recovering an overuse injury JUST the previous week. Let me just say, those ECV's are not all they are cracked up to be, and I ended up with sore shoulders from the poor ergonomics. Evidently they are made for people with really long arms.

I called my friend Sara in the middle of the day - I was sitting in the boneyard, just watching my DS doing this:

My husband was off riding Everest with the fastpass I had collected for him first thing (followed by a ride for me in the single rider lane) and then took our tall-enough boy on the Prime Evil Whirl. So just sitting in the boneyard, supervising, I called Sara and told her about my rental and she said she HAD to see a picture of this. There you go, Sara.

P5030373.jpg

I don't know if I should feel proud or guilty for doing the rental, but every time I stood up, I felt my feet actually groan at me, so even if it was ironic, I do feel like it gave my feet a much-needed, if marginally unethical rest.

We enjoyed our Animal Kingdom morning and then went for lunch at Wolfgang Puck express in Downtown Disney. Cause there's not that much vegetarian food in Animal Kingdom, that's why. Ironic or appropriate: you decide.

After a boat ride back to OKW, we had good naps that afternoon and before the nap, I had a much needed shower. Next we were up and out to our reservation at Crystal Palace. Which is a long way from the front gates at MK. The scooter rental is transferrable between parks, but unfortunately, they were out of them. I got on the waiting list and it was only about 10 minutes before they had one for me. In the meantime, Andrew had taken the boys to find something to ride. He called me as I was approaching the front of the scooter line and I told him NOT to do the Laugh Floor Comedy show, cause while it's great, it could take too long. Then I abruptly hung up on him cause it was my turn and I got flustered. Long story short (too late) he wasn't answering his phone after that, and I didn't know where they had gone and I thought he might be ticked off that I had hung up like that....so I went and got FP's for BTMRR. I only had 2 of our tickets at that point, unfortunately, so 2 was all I could get. This is getting long. We had dinner at Crystal Palace. Andrew wasn't mad at me - he was in Stitch's Great Escape. After dinner, we split up and he rode BTMRR with one boy and I took the other to the Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse - it was what he wanted!!! So I parked the scooter out front and hopped up and climbed up and down all those treehouse stairs. Pretty suspicious, if you ask me. The Spectro parade was going by over on Main Street and the hub, and the view from up in that treehouse in the evening is spectacular.

A quick ride on Pirates and it was time for me to head home and get ready for bed. Before bed, put biofreeze on my feet, figuring it couldn't hurt. I set the alarm clock, climbed into bed, and....the rest of the crew arrived back from the Magic Kingdom. And proceeded to get ready for bed, themselves. Gotta get up in 4 hours here, people. :rolleyes1

P.S. Did I mention that the ice machine at our bus stop was broken? I'd have done a lot more ice baths for my feet if it had been easier to get ice.

So I woke up 15 minutes after the time my alarm was set for and wondered how in the world that had happened. I later figured out (when the alarm went off during the afternoon nap) that I'd done the bone-headed set the time for PM instead of AM. :headache: But the important this was that I was up and I was going to make it to the HH bus stop where Mel was collecting me along with Nancy and Jeanne and Jeanne's husband at 4:30. Oh, and my feet felt GREAT. I got dressed and out the door and then actually had to go back for lip balm. Which I put on right then and proceeded not to need for the rest of the morning. But you never know.

Mel was right on time...or was it a few minutes late - she said she had left everything in her room, including photo ID and had to win the guard over to her story of picking people up for the race. Jeanne gave me my Ohana bandana....which I still owe Jen for, I'm afraid. The excitement of the pre-race excitement shoved the thoughts of compensation right out of my little head. There were many different choices that day for how to wear the Ohana team colors, but I opted for the over the visor headband. I also liked them as neckerchiefs on Jeanne and Nancy and as a headband on Denny (whom I saw but didn't get over to meet, unfortunately).

We parked at Epcot and got onto an anonymous looking bus full of other runners for the ride to Animal Kingdom...or so we hoped!

Yeah, it dropped us off at the AK parking lot - no problem. The wish gathering was quite impressive. I got to talk to a bunch of wishers, but names so rarely stay in my head even without pre-race excitement. My jittery level was pretty low for these races. I'm not sure exactly why that was, but I was not the basket-case I was before the Tower of Terror race. I ate half my Pria 110 bar, put the rest under the water bottle in my water belt, checked my bag. Talked with Stacy and her DH, Leana and her mom, Mel and Jen, and quite a few others. It was a very nice way to pass the time. Nancy and Jeanne and I went off to get in the port-a-potty lines nice and early and then before I knew it, it was time to head for the chutes....or if not chutes, then time-clusters.

I found Mel and Jen again and also talked to Lisa (WithDisneySpirit) who had a very cool fuel belt.

My start-of-race photos are a bit of a disaster. This was the best of the ones I took:

Minnie was up there and they were chatting away with her. I forgot to mention this in the 5K report, but they were talking away to Minnie and she gave her prepared statement. And then the guy asked her a question....eerie, stony silence from Minnie. Moving on. At the 15K, he kept it to more of a monologue. No questions for Minnie. Before we knew it, then they were counting down and there was a little firework for each number in the countdown. This must have been 5.

And we're off! Another signature photo by ME.

It took a mile of running to get out of the Animal kingdom parking lot.

I'll add more tomorrow. I'm wiped out! At least the photos are all loaded up. :)

OK, friends. I know I still owe you a Minnie 15K report, but I just have to say, I'm back from the New Prague 5K and....I am going to need a new goal, because if the finish clock is to be believed, I have gotten my sub-30 5K!!!!!!!
Not sure what my chip time will be and I started my garmin about .1 mile into the run  so I'll have to wait for the official time online, BUT, my clock time as I crossed was 29:45, or thereabouts. And I thought I was going to hurl. I have never felt like that at the end of a run before, but today, I must have really pushed it.

I just have to say:
:dance3: :yay:  :dance3: :cheer2: :cool1: :laundy: :rotfl2: :worship:
