I just returned from the vet's after the hardest decision I have ever made in my life. I had to put my beloved Standard Poodle Sebastian down. He was 14 years old and in acute renal failure. They tried three days of intense intravenous fluids last week and three days this week but still his kidney values (creatinine remained high 6.8). We still can't figure what caused the renal failure.

Sebastian was my once in a life time dog. He slept with me, went into whatever room I was in, stood my my side, would get upset and worried if he couldn't come with me. He was a people dog and loved everyone.

I'm so distraught and crying, crying, crying. I wish he could have just left earth during his sleep.

It's so hard to lose a pet, I'm sorry.

Mary,
I am so sorry. I had to do this with my German Shepherd for the same reason. She was 14 and had acute kidney failure. It happened very quickly, over a holiday weekend no less. It was awful. Sometimes it is quick like that and the vets never really know when it starts. I had another dog that had it but it was chronic and went on for about a year.

I'm sorry for your loss. I truly understand how devastating it is.

I am so sorry. I'm crying as I type as it was a year ago this week I had to put my Golden Retriever down. As you, he was a once in a lifetime dog for me. I'm thinking of you.

your dog sounded like a great pet. it's so heartbreaking to lose a beloved pet that has been a member of your family for so long. :grouphug: :grouphug:

I am so sorry :(

I know how bad it hurts to say good bye to a beloved pet.

My heart breaks for you. My Winnie is like that...barks if I go into the bathroom! I am so so sorry. I hope the memories of the love you two shared bring you peace.

I don't know any words that will offer any comfort...

only know that you did everything you could

Thank you all. I know there are alot of dog lovers on the Dis.

Christine -- I had a friend whose dog had chronic renal failure and was so skinny and sick. If Sebastian had to go I'm glad it was only over a period of a week and half.

Trish Bessette -- I had another Standard Poodle Sir Sherlock Holmes who died of a congential heart/lung defect at three years old. I presently have Winslow who is 7 1/2. I loved and love them both. I'm glad to see there are dog people out there who know sometimes you get that once in a lifetime dog and for me it was Sebastian.

I'm going to take a Valium and go to bed.

Agains thanks for your replies.

Mary

Mary - I am so sorry for your loss. You sound like you have been a wonderful fur-mommy to Sebastian. :grouphug:

I'm so sorry for your loss. You were both very lucky to have each other for so long.

I am facing the same situation. My baby is 14 years old. She has horrible trouble with her teeth and sinuses. She had cancer. I don't know whether to have all of her teeth pulled to ease the sinus problem. I don't know if the cancer has gotten into the lungs because she coughs. We are bringing her to the vet next week to have all of these questions asked. I had to put my other poodle down many years ago. My biggest regret was not putting her out of her misery sooner. I pray that I don't feel that way about this one. It is just too hard to make these decisions. I am so sorry that you are facing this. I pray daily that God takes her in her sleep so that I won't have to do it myself.

It's the hardest decision. You don't want to do it a day too soon or a day too late.

I have a 13 year old cocker spaniel (see my sig picture). I know we are living on borrowed time. His predecessor had to be put down at 12 1/2. It broke my heart.

I remember getting Cody (from a cocker spaniel rescue) and saying to him "You are going to break my heart one day too, aren't you." It's still worth having them though.

I'm so sorry.

As the mom of two poodles, I know how you feel. I also know that if there was anything that could have been done, you would have done it. The hardest thing in life is to accept that there are things we can't change. I am so sorry. I know you loved Sebastian and he knew it too.
