I guess others probably know this, but maybe some don't..I never realized it until last night when I was playing around with trip planning in the future and maximum points available...
I have always figured that 3 year's was the maximum, bank one year and borrow from one year plus current year = 3 years...BUT
If you schedule your trip to straddle the end and beginning of your use year you could have 4 years of points to use on one trip...as the use year ends you use all your points from that year and banked points from the year before..Then at the start of the next use year you use all that year's points plus borrow from the next year.

Example: 220 points- August Use Year...
Schedule trip for end of July and beginning of August 2003:
Use 220 from Aug 2001 (that were banked into Aug 2002-July 31 2003) just be sure to use at LEAST 220 points in July. For the days in August use Aug 2003 points and Aug 2004 points...the Aug 2002 points can go on either side of July 31 as current or banked...voila- 840 points at your disposal for one trip....(but you will have to wait a while before you can go again!);)

Yep, that will work as you're actually taking two vacations in different years and simply linking them together: one vacation at the end of the year, the other at the beginning.

Kudos to you!

Just make sure you don't have to cancel! The points for the first half of the trip will be gone unless you cancel early enough and use them for an earlier trip.

LOL. You could actually use 5 years worth of points at one time by booking before your use year, staying a full year then stretching over the use yearr again. Hey, if a couple each owned the Max points, that's 50,000 points to use total over 5 years. Rich could even stay in a GV at OKW for that length of time.

This thread is making me wonder about the length of time for the longest DVC stay on points. I wonder how long it is?

My brain is going....please remind me -- What is the maximum point ownership per person?

IIRC (my brain is gone, too. It said it would give me a giant headache if I even tried to figure out what Paul was saying), the max is 2000 points per person at a single resort and a total maximum of 5,000 DVC points per person if more than one resort. Believe those amounts could double for a couple.

Yep, it's per person. I assume they would use the SSN and "main" owner to assign actual ownership.

The first time we stayed at our DVC property after purchasing, we were transferring from...POFQ I think...to OKW. The bellman who came to take our luggage told us his parents had purchased enough DVC points to stay there for 3 months every winter. He said they lived in Ohio, his sister and her family lived in Ohio, he and his family lived in Orlando. His parents came down every winter right after Christmas I think, and stayed for 3 months. He said that with his CM discount, buying that many points didn't cost them any more than buying a home down there would have, and they have the added benefit of not having to worry about it for the time they are not there. It's willable, so when they die they will leave it to his sister so she can travel to WDW...maybe she can sell off some of the points or whatever, because I doubt she'll need 3 months worth!

When I heard that, I thought it was a very good idea. Just think about it...you stay in a very nice unit, close to your son and his family, in an area where there is a TON of stuff to do, and when you're done, you leave with no worries about who's going to check on your home etc.
