I just did the Staples back to school run.

Ouch.

The bad news is that I spent $122.84.

The good news is that I have more than enough binders and notebooks and looseleaf and all the other stuff to get us through the school year. (Three kids plus 2 teachers) And that I got 5 packs of loose leaf for $0.01 each. And a ream of paper for $1. ($6.99, but I just went online and filed for the $5.99 rebate.) And that I bought their discount card for $10, which ended up saving me over $10 (that's after the cost of the card.) And I got a $10 coupon to Kohs (and have a 30% off coupon to Kohls in my purse.)

I've already done the Target runs for pens and crayons and all the other stuff, so we should be good to go as soon as I get my daughter a sketch book for art.

Oh, and by the way, some of the binders were adorable, at no extra cost.

I'll have enough for the 5 of us, and some extra to donate.

Today was tax free day in MA so I saved even more. My mom was also going to staples and got me the filler paper too. Between the two of us I saved $15 on that deal. The older two could re-use all of their binders from last year as well as their calculators and a few other items (Thank goodness cause the calculators are $90 each - on sale! )

I'm sure I still have more to buy - But that has to wait until they're back in school next month and the teacher specific lists come home.

- a pen or pencil. I don't care which you use.
- for my geometry kids, a TI30XA calculator ($12 at Staples yesterday.) You won't need it till after Christmas (when we start trig) so you can let Santa know. My Algebra I kids don't use calculators.
- Sometime after Thanksgiving, some graph paper. I'll give you a week's heads up.
- A straightedge for when we hit graphing. Your school ID will be fine.

So basically, any parent who has hit the sales already has the stuff necessary for my class.

Yeah, that's just wrong.

Expecting kids to have some supplies is one thing-- like paper and a pen. Demanding that their parents drop everything to get the particulars that you deem necessary is soemthing entirely different.

And tying it into an ACADEMIC grade???? Oh, so wrong on so many levels.

When I was in high school and grade school this happened sometimes. Of course, I went to a private school, so that might be why they were able to get away with it. The teachers that did this the lists weren't horrible.

But to be honest, I don't buy a whole lot of supplies for the kids I teach. And as much as I can always use more for my own kids, that's not what they're intending when they extend that courtesy.

But I'll keep it in mind if I find something for the kids I teach. (The problem, of course, is that I teach ballpark 180 kids a year.)

I wish my daughters list was that small! She is going into 9th grade and this is the list SO FAR-they tell you that the teachers add on the first day of school too! I am still trying to figure out what WET erase markers are- I find dry erase but not wet erase!
