Being a rookie with DVC, I am in need of some expert assistance, please. We were looking at the resorts available for trade with II in Cancun. Has anyone had any experience doing this? Is it worth the trade? Are the resorts nice? Some better than others?
How far out does one need to start working on making a vacation happen via II?
Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated!! :surfweb:

THANKS A BUNCH!!

My sister has stayed at the Royal Resorts in Cancun and really likes them. From her pictures, I thought they looked extremely nice. As far as trading with II, I would be flexible with travel dates and I bet you'll get a match. Hopefully Dean will see your post and give you some advice on a timeline for a search.

Here's a link to the Royals' website:

Good luck.

I traded into Royal Caribbean this past July. I put in my request the last week of May 2005, they called back shortly after (a week or two) that my request had be made. We are not flexable with our vacation times, so we were pretty much set on the first week of July only, we requested the Royal Sands, Royal Caribbean, or the Royal Islander. We were very pleased with our trade. In my opinion, it was was worth the trade. The Royal Resorts are very beautiful. The staff is awesome. We went w/o the DS, for our 10th Anni. We are planning on going back sometime in the near future, taking DS next time.....he will love it! I would not hesitate to take any and all ages to these resorts.....there is something for everyone!

Let me know if you have any questions, I'd be more than willing to help answer them.

For Cancun, I'd limit myself to the Royals outside of VCI. Specifically the Royal Caribbean, Islander, Mayan and Sands. All are very nice and for the 1 BR or larger likely as good or better than DVC overall if you include service as a criteria. Their studios fall far short though IMO and I would not accept one for an exchange.

I would only exchange for 1 BR or larger and only at one of the Royal Resorts. I would not exchange for Club International though. Even though it is a Royal Resort and the resort itself is nice, it is on a different beach than the other resorts. The beach is terrible compared to the other Royal Resorts. Even though the Royal Mayan is one of the older Royals I think it is still my favorite--it just has a special feel. The Royal Carribean has the least character in my opinion, but I would still stay there. You can't go wrong with the Royal Resorts. Like I said though, as far as I've seen, all other places in Cancun aren't nearly as nice! Have a nice time!

We did this in 2005. It was very easy--we were able to get the exact week we wanted.
There is an important "BUT" here-- we didn't realize (til we got there) that late July/early August is high season for Mexican tourists. The Royal Resorts are beautiful--but the guests were overwhelmingly Mexican. This made it difficult for our kids (10 and 16 at the time) to make friends, as their Spanish is not very good. So they hung around DH and me all the time! :scared1: Too much togetherness!!
We did meet some other American families, but they were few and far between that time of year. I am told that during the winter and "spring break" times there are more Americans.
The resorts are beautiful!! But if you have kids who are looking for things to do, be advised!
