It's January. It's too late, isn't it? I did this last year too. I am at Home Depot and think, "hey! Bulbs! My yard will look so good!"... Then I buy them...and forget to plant them. Then the ground is frozen .... and I still have bulbs in my closet.

What should I do? can I still plant them? Say.... if we get a warm spell? (riiiiiight...not in MA... we won't see Spring until April...) ... just curious... anyone else do this too? :)

Oh, goodness, yes! Of course we all buy bulbs and don't plant them at one time or another!

I've never tried to plant them in the spring (or once the ground is thawed) but I'd take a shot and throw them in. Hey....why not???

If you get a thaw....yeah right, notice where I live....then get them in the ground..if not, wait till spring and plant them..they won't flower this year but will have some time to get a root system before NEXT spring.

Fall bulbs can be planted in the spring. When the ground thaws, dig a hole add bone meal and plant the bulbs. They will grow and produce green leaves, but will probably not flower, if they do flower cut off the bud. Let the green leaves die, this will produce enough energy in the bulb so next spring you will have beautiful spring flowers.

Remember do not cut the green leaves off. Let them die back

What about planting them now in pots & store them in a garage or basement? Then when the ground thaws you could transplant. I would think you would have a better chance at getting flowers this year.

Welcome to the F&GB, Katerbell! :)

I think we've all forgotten about bulbs we've bought from time to time.

Lot's of good advice here for you, and fellow Mass. gardeners! :)

Thanks for all the advice... I think I will try to plant them when we get a thaw, and I'll remember to not expect any flowers until next year - and then it'll be a surprise - I'll probably forget they were there! :)
