That used to happen all the time, folks. The limit was 5000. Probably less when I started, in April 2006.

There was a limit when beta started. Only 1000 players were allowed at once. I first encountered it June 2005, when VMK opened to public and it had it's first party.

I remember when VMK didn't even have "VMK is full" messages, the game would simply crash itself or display a "temporarily unavailible" page at sign-in.
