I am pregnant again. When I was preggo with DS I had bad heartburn everyday and used Tagamet to releive it. This time I'm having something different. It feels like my throat is closing or like my throat is full with the heartburn. It's such a weird annoying feeling and TUMS hasn't helped a bit! Anyone else have anything similar ever? It's so fustrating to eat and then 20 minutes later feel like my throat is still full of food and it burns. Gross.

Thanks for any help.

I had this with my DS....my first pregnancy. I had NEVER had heartburn in my life and had no clue what was happening!! I swear, I thought my throat was literally on fire!! :earseek: Tums, Rolaids...things like that...didn't help one bit!! I finally tried Mallox, the liquid kind. The first time I took it, I swear, I had never felt such RELIEF in my life!! ::yes:: Give that a try. Congratulations, by the way!! I'm happy to report "the rabbit didn't die"!!:teeth:

I'm a lurker on this board, so I feel kind of funny posting, but here goes! I never had heartburn until I was pregnant with #3 and it was awful! The Tums/Maalox made it worse, which a gastroenterologist told me that the ones with the calcium actually cause more acid to be produced (making your symptoms worse!), so I stopped taking those. There is a GERD medication that you can get from your doctor that is pregnancy category B, which means it is considered safe to use. It is a type of drug called a proton pump inhibitor and it turns off a lot of the pumps that produce acid in your stomach. Usually resolves all the symptoms. I'm a health care provider and if you want to PM me I can tell you a little more. In the meantime, as you probably already know, small meals, stay upright for 30 min after you eat, don't eat before going to bed, etc. Good luck and congratulations! :D

Another vote for Maalox. I used to carry a bottle around with me at all times. There were many days I would drink it straight from the bottle.

Thanks so much! I'll skip the TUMS and call my Dr. to see if they can fix it. It is really fustrating esp cause I'm preggo and hungry but vant eat too much cause then I'll feel awful later. AHHHH it never ends LOL

Chewable papaya tablets...get them at the health food store...recommended by my ob.

I second the papaya. It's good for you, and it helps with acid reflux. Also, stay away from peppermint or any kind of mint. Mint is a traditional rememedy for upset stomachs, but it makes acid reflux worse.

Congratulations on your pregnancy! How far along are you? I'm pregnant, too, and am about 9 weeks.
