I just got back in contact with an old friend who has a daughter that has just turned 2 years old. I would love to send them some cute clothes or something but I have no idea what size she'd be...any parents out there that can give me a hand?
Thanks!!

I have 3 kids. When they are that young, I usually go one size over the age. So for a 2 year old, I would buy 3T - that's 3 Toddler size. But I like things roomy and not too tight.

Of course, all kids are different so if they are on the smaller or larger size, this may not be right.

Maybe you can get them from a common store and include gift receipts so she can exchange them if the size is wrong.

I agree with the pp about buying something from a chain store like Gap or The Children's Place and include gift receipts. My son is a year and a half and the 2T pants are too small but he can fit into 2T shirts. (He's got a little belly and 2T pants are too tight in the waist).

I always double because of cotton shrinkage( i have 2 girls 8 and 5). If she is 2 and you're buying for this particular season, 3T might be fine. But if it's for the coming season and you want some room, I would shoot for 4T. --Del

Very sweet, however judging just from my 2 kids and my 6 neices and nephews, the size can be so difficult !! Kids in our family run ran from tiny - my neice is still in a 12 mos, tall and just big!! That and if you are out of touch you don't know the tastes, these days its as difficult to buy clothes for kids as it is for me, LOL

Can I suggest a nice book, hit your local Barns and Noble and go to the toddler section and go crazy. If you are looking for something just to show you care and are glad to be back in touch that would do the trick for me.

Hopefully you will stay in touch and next time you want to send a gift you will know exactly the size and style and feel more comfortable buying clothes.

My son is 19 months and wears 24mos/2T pants but at least a 3T top. With a girl you could easily buy a dress that doesn't have to "fit" so perfectly like pants or a cotton bathing suit coverup or pajamas which can be a little big. I would go 3T unless she is a small frame and of course include a gift receipt! Also 2 year olds would love new books or a video where no size is needed! You're so nice!! princess:

My DS is 18 months and wears either 12 month or 18 month clothes. He's always been small. If you buy something too big, they may not grow into it before the season changes (that's happened to my DS).

And of course you can do a little detective work.. ASk her to e-mail you a picture of her little one.. Oooh and Ahhh over her and say things like how cute she is... Say, how much does she weigh now or is she tall like her mom!!! My DS was tiny and wore no larger that the age he was and sometimes smaller. The problem if it's too big is that she might not be into it till the next weather season and never get to wear it. As a mom boy I love to buy for little girls but a first gift of something else might also be a good idea till you learn more about her. What about a specail baby doll.

I agree with a pp about getting a little more info if you want to buy clothes. As an example, my son is at the 95th percentile for height (meaning he is taller than 95% of all the other kids) and my daughter is 5th percentile (she's pretty small!). At age 2, my son wore size 3T for the length, but struggled with the fit because he is a slim kid. My daughter at age 2 was still wearing 12 month clothes! So, find out more (the photo is a great idea) or consider an non-clothing item. If you go with clothes, I have found that Osh Kosh clothes, while great, tend to fit a bit small, and you'll definitely need a size larger. Another idea is to look for a clothing item that will stretch over several seasons. For example, a jumper out of a mid-weight material that would work in many temperatures, depending on the shirt worn underneath. That way, even if she has to grow into it, there's a better chance of her getting some use out of it.

As the mom of two HUGE boys, I think you should just ask her. I've gotten many clothing gifts that my boys were never able to wear because they were just way too small, and many of them are from family members in other states who shop at stores we don't even have. My 5 month old wears a 2T right now, and my 2 year old is wearing a 4T, but he started wearing that size when he was about 16 months old.

I know if I were the receipent, I'd sure love a Gymboree gift card!! You can't go wrong with them in my opinion.

Here is a silly idea ... Why not ask your friend what size her DD wears? Next time you talk to her say I sure would love to buy "Suzy" a cute spring dress/outfit what size does she wear.

I would agree with asking her, or at least asking for some clues. My daughter will be 1 on 2/26 and still wears 6-9 months. She's in the 75th percentile in height (29.25 inches), but 25th percentile in weight (18 lbs. 12 oz.), so all the 12 month clothes literally fall off of her. Dresses are a bit easier as the length is okay and I don't have to worry about the waist, but even with dresses she wore a 6 month today. My niece, on the other hand, was 18 pounds at 4 months, so even though she was born in August and my daughter in February, they wore the same size at Christmas.

My son will be 2 in March. He is wearing 18 months just fine. A 2T would maybe be OK for a shirt, but DEFINITELY NOT 3Ts here. Both of my kids pretty much wore their age, not above it. Send a toy. :wave2:

I would recommend either asking what size to buy, or giving a gift card. I hate to seem ungracious, but my DD is very tiny, and I have huge boxes of clothing in the attic that she won't grow into for years probably. Relatives give me that "look" if I mention having to buy her any clothes because they think she's got plenty...after all, they all buy her tons of clothes. Yes, they do, however they don't buy anything that actually fits her!

She was 2 in October, she weighs 20 pounds, and is 32 inches tall. Even I have a difficult time finding things to fit her. Size 12 months is about right as far as weight goes, but she needs 18 months for the length. My DS, on the other hand, weighed 24 pounds at age 6 months. (He's now a peanut also, his pic is my avatar...he'll be 11 next month and wears a size 10 slim.)
