I have been fired today.....

I know when I worked for Sylvan, we had to sign a non-compete and were made to act as if we even tutored after we left for up to 24 months, we could be taken to court. I checked with an attorney and he said that was not true. So, I tutored for a short time.

PA is an At Will state....you can be terminated without reason...

Sorry Kanga....Same sort of thing happened to me...at least you can get some satisfaction about letting her boss know what is going on...'

Am I understanding this correctly? You "requested" a day off, the day off wasn't granted. Your boss told you you would need to find coverageif you wanted the day off. You didn't find coverage and just didn't show up for work.

If so, it seems like your boss was justified. The told you you couldn't have tha day off and you chose not to show up. Sounds like insubordination to me.

I've worked at various places where 7-day per week coverage was needed and everybody wanted certain holidays or observances (such as Mother's Day) off. We could ask for the day off, but if we were on the schedule we were expected to be there or have someone be there in our place.

Sorry to hear this Olga. I'm glad that you aren't pressed about it though, since you planned to quit anyway.

This whole thing reminds me of a situation we had at work one year. It involved a good friend of mine, who was a manager over about 50 people. The holiday of Martin Luther King day was approaching, and many people wanted off. She only had so many slots so she did a first come first serve approach. One woman was very upset that she couldn't have off, and started telling people she was going to do so anyway. The day came and she did take off without calling in. The manager approached her about it the next day, and this crazy woman just lit into the manager and beat the crap out of her! To the point where the police were called. What I most remember about the incident was there were fake nails everywhere, LOL! These women were ready to scratch each other's eyeballs out!

Anyway, in that case, the woman was told ahead of time she could not have the day off, and since everyone worked the same shift, there was no getting someone to fill her shift. It does seem unfair that the other person was given the time off with no reprimand, but you weren't.

Say no more. I don't work for these types of companies.

Kim, I did find out today that PA is an AT WILL state ( something new I learnt today ). When I was hired 7 years ago , I was told as long as I give enough notice , I can have the time off because they can schedule someone else.
This manager just came along 2 years ago and made herself the rule that you must find your own coverage. Also employees must alternate holidays and I have never taken one off unless it falls during the week ( I don't work during the week ) , so I believe that one holiday in almost 8 years, I think it's ok , especially when they had 3 other people working that shift, the problem is if she pulled one of those people to cover for me, then that person would not be able to do the work that the manager is supposed to do
I do not get paid for time off , since I am part time I don't get any benefits , so it's not like they are paying me sick time or anything, geez they pay straight pay to work holidays!
So no matter what they do or say now....I'm GONE !!!
Recently they have lost 2 good workers, one had been there 6 months less than me and the other had been there 5 years, so what does that tell you?? Time to move on , and my time is NOW.

Doesn't sound like it was a very nice place to work. Hope something else better comes along for you.
