I have an idea about decreasing the negativity in some of these threads...

Although I can also see a drawback.

But here it is. How about the boards work so that who ever posts the original thread, can end it at any time once their question is answered?

That way, as soon as the thread starts taking on a life of it's own with debates and arguments about issues that have little to do with the original question. the OP could just end it.

The drawback I think could be for posts that take on a life of their own but in a positive and interesting way. They might be cut short before we all get our fill...... :scratchin

So what do you guys think? I don't even know if it could be done, but I think it could help! :wizard:

I think it would make the boards very boring. Lots of threads have gone off on somewhat related (sometimes not so related) but very interesting tangents once the original topic was exhausted. As long as everyone is being polite and respectful, I see no reason to close the thread even if the topic has strayed quite a bit. And if people aren't playing nice, then it should be reported to the Mods who can decide if the thread needs to be closed. JMHO.

I vote no princess: :flower:

Sorry erinz but I have to vote no as well....

Although there have been many threads that have created a life of it's own, it would make the boards well.... dull and it would make sure that only the posts to the thread would be the limited to the OPs way of thinking and that's not a true picture of how things are.

I understand what you're saing though, sometimes these threads go on to a whole different area and keeps building and building until it is closed or people just get tired of it..LOL.. been there.. done that...

It was a good try though!

Yeah.....I was sort of thinking the same thing. Oh well......just a thought. :)

Conflict leads to debate...debate leads to thought....thought leads to progress. Well, that's my theory, although it doesn't always work out that way. :goodvibes

I think the freedom of speech shown on here is great so I too would vote no.
By the way..........have you seen the price of fish these days (what was that about threads going off to another area........ ;) :)

Well said. I completely agree.

I know I'm new here, I don't know much about how these boards generally flow, but I've got to say that I love posts that challenge my way of thinking and open my eyes to something I may have been ignorant to. As long as people don't resort to name-calling; if they can question or disagree in a civilized manner, I personally find those discussions much more interesting than 20 people nodding in agreement.

Also, the OP mentions "posts that take on a life of their own but in a positive and interesting way". Not everyone has the same definition of "positive and interesting". Some posters might be enjoying a thread that others find negative or boring. My suggestion to everyone is to ignore threads you personally find negative or boring, read and post only to those you are enjoying. Threads that no one is enjoying will quickly drop to the 2nd, 3rd, 4th pages and be forgotten.

Just my humble opinion.

OK.....it was a bad idea  I'm realizing that more and more as I read these threads. I completey agree, it would be HORRIBLY boring if a thread was cut off after the question was answered! :disrocks:
