I have an American Idol question

Rueben was on Ellen this week and had Ricky as one of his back-up singers!

I don't listen to the radio much ever in the morning (usually like quiet first thing when I get in at work) so I always miss morning shows like that. I did look and that show is on one radio station here (actually one that I think just switched genres because I swore it used to be a rock station) so sometime I might have to try to listen. The other R&B stations I listen to play other things around here. I flip a lot though as I like everything but country, so I may not hear enough of one station to get a true idea, but I haven't heard either Clay or Ruben on the radio in months!

One thing though, in my eyes you *can* like both Barry Manilow and Luther Vandross... I don't think you can necessarily compare styles of music, but I could compare the *voice* (in this case I think Luther Vandross wins). It may not be a fair comparison (like comparing Clay to Luciano Pavarotti) but a voice is a voice to me and style has nothing to do with it.

Spinning, as much as I like Clay, I have to agree... the lyrics are a bit odd. I *think* they are trying to say that he has no guts when it comes to telling the truth how he feels and that he daydreams about her. I dunno, my husband is convinced it is a stalker song though :p

I think Ruben is more out and about more so maybe his songs will reach out to more. I saw him on the NAACP Image Awards last night doing his thing... he's not bad at all and I hope he does get more universal exposure :)

i didn't watch AI last year...i discovered clay way after the rest of the world did...

i like ruben...i think he has a great voice, but he just doesn't stand out to me. any interviews i've seen him on, he just doesn't have the personality that draws me to a performer. i'm not a huge R&B fan anyhow, but i do believe he has a great voice.

clay, on the other hand, is just a born star. he's outgoing, and the rarest of all, he's genuine. with clay, what you see is what you get! no gimmicks...he's just a guy who's having a blast. he doesn't seem to get all caught up in the hoopla of being a celebrity. but he's also using his celebrity as a platform for his foundation. he's started the bubel-aiken foundation for autistic children. he's always said that if this whole celebrity thing ended tomorrow, he would go right back to teaching autistic children.

this whole thing about clay's cd being released first...didn't that happen with the first AI? justin's cd came out before kelly's? i saw nothing wrong with that at all...it's not clay's fault that his cd is outselling any other AI winner/finalist.

But could some explain Clay song I am invisible? The lryics are really odd....
if you listen to the whole song, he's talking about how he likes this girl, but she doesn't know he's alive. he'd tell her how he feels but he's afraid of a broken heart, etc. he's not talking about stalking her or anything creepy like that...

I like both very much altho I only hear Clay on the radio. I do flip radio stations (like my DH flips TV Channels but I never hear Ruben).

That's kind of funny since I rarely hear Clay on the radio but hear Ruben all the time :D . I know both of their videos have done well on MTV.

On the "lite" stations here in Miami, and Ruben on the "rap/R&B" stations. I hear a LOT of Clay, as I do not listen too much to the Rap, only at work when the stock guys play it before the store opens!;)

I agree with everything Tess said.

Another reason that Clay was tossed into the media frenzy more than Ruben was the whole second contract fiasco. Ruben was accused of having a contract to wear those 205 shirts on the show even though the AI contract strictly says there are to be no other contracts signed by the contestants. He layed low during that time and let it pass by. It was a smart move...most people have forgotten about it.
I haven't heard any of Ruben's songs on the radio..but I also don't listen to R&B/rap and being here in NC...Clay is the big winner..most of the radio stations promote only him.

Very good thought there Kristy! I almost made a comment about that in my last post, but it was already long enough as it was ;) Between that and the whole "voting troubles" probably made it hard for him at first as well. Kind of sad that came up when it did :( And I bet in your case location has everything to do with it. I'd guess that Ruben is "IT" in Birmingham, Alabama as well :)

Thank you Brandie for giving a much better idea of what the song is about than I ever could. I'm going to have to quote you the next time Luis teases me like that.

Ruben won but Clay was more popular, I don't know why...

*runs away ducking* ;)

Hi Preshi, the ClayNation really let you off easy with that comment. After Reuben was crowned American Idol (by popular vote) I was viciously attacked by the claymaniacswhen I expressed MY opinion that Reuben was obviously the better performer.

"Pressing the SUBMIT REPLY button and diving for cover!"

Why in the world would you need cover because you think Ruben is better than CLay? For me, voice to voice it is Ruben all the way but for spunk and charm I like Clay he is just so likable and has talent. So to me they both have great qualities but only one can win first place... But I personally think they both won and will have make records and be around for awhile!

I believe that the real reason Ruben won is that Oprah said that she loved him (while AI2 was still on). I don't know if anyone remembers, but she mentioned that she really loved Ruben (before the final voting took place) and you all know how much people LOVE Oprah (remember the mad cow fiasco). I'm not saying who is better, I'm just saying that I think Ruben got a lot more votes just for being one of Oprah's favorites.

I have often wondered about Clay getting so much more exposure than Ruben. I only hear Clay songs on the radio (not very frequently though), however I don't listen to R&B stations generally. I really like the interviews where Ruben and Clay are on together--their friendship seems very genuine and they play off of each other quite humorously. I certainly don't know if the voting was "rigged" or not, but I think it's a shame that people are mean to Ruben about his win. Even if the rumor that it was in fact rigged turned out to be true, it certainly wouldn't be Ruben's fault. Both performers seem like real class acts, and I like them both. Vocally I prefer Clay's style of music, but I think they both seem like great guys.

I think it just depends on what kind of music you are into IMO. I am a hip hop/R&B head, therefore when I listen to the radio, I only listen to those type of stations. I hear Ruben quite a bit, he is also on BET's video line-up and TRL quite a bit. My sister listens to a more pop oriented station and when i am in her car or etc. I only hear Clay, every hour on the hour. I think they are both great singers but their singing styles/genre's are just different and they appeal to different groups of people. I don't think one has more "star power" than the other even (though I may get bashed for that opinion). Just my 2 cents.

I have a co-worker who bought the Ruben CD and loves it. She listens to R&B stations and tells me they play his tracks a lot.

As far as the voting system goes, I've always felt they should limit the calls per household to 5. You read about people voting for 3 hours straight. How is that a fair assessment of the people's choice?

I keep hearing that Kimberly Locke has a CD out. I have never heard it though. I also never see her on tv.

Oh, and whatever happened to Tamyra Gray? I thought she would hit it big too.

Kimberly Locke does have a cd coming out soon. The first single has already been released and is playing on pop stations. I like it a lot. However...just by hearing it on the radio...you would never know it's her singing. It's called 8th Wonder of the World.

Hmm, I LOVE CLAY! Anyways, I just had to get that out there. Honestly, I think Clay has an endearing personality that most people cannot help but love... Both guys have great (but different) voices... Clay just has that effervescent personality...

Kim Locke's full length CD is coming out in May & her single is available now... you can get both on Amazon...

I just have to say I met Kim when we were boarding a flight for Sydney Australia December 29th... I was the only one that spoke to her when we were boarding.... she was GREAT... a lot sweeter than I'd expected, I'm not sure why I thought she wasn't sweet, but she is!

The radio station I listen to in Houston only plays Kelly Clarkson. I've never heard a Clay or Ruben song. Although I'm glad that Clay is successful, I feel that AI did Ruben wrong with giving the same pretige and deal to Clay. At least I think that's what happened. It's all about the money.

From hearing Ruben perform on AI, I can tell that they are only marketing his CD to Soul/R&B stations. That's where I feel they went wrong. They could've made alot more money off these young folks by writing them only P1 material. I like R&B alot though!!! My all time favorite......

I hear Clay quite a bit on Radio Disney, that's the station my daughter listens to. Maybe they will start playing some of Rueben's songs too. Can anyone tell me the name of one or two of his songs? I'll ask my daughter to call in and request one and see if it gets played.

I heard someone not too long ago on a talk show (I think) mention that Clay could have been better songs for his first CD. Did anyone hear that?

They both have different voices. While I didn't care too much for the song Rueben sang the other night on AI, I'd like to hear others. Its the same with Clay. I don't like all of his songs on his CD either. And Invisible has grown on me, I hear it so much.

I had to smile when I read this thread. I don't usually hear either of them on my radio because I normally listen to alternative or rock but I do hear Clay when I'm shopping. The light stations that stores use seem to really like Clay.
