I have a question, not sure if someone is teasing me or what..

Fasting in our diocese is only for Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Friday's during Lent require abstinence only.
This is what I was always told.

Also you are exempt is you are over 65, under 13, had a medical condition, are traveling (eat what is served) or are a guest in a home that is not Catholic. So it is not a hard an fast rule.

If you are an ex-Catholic, why do you need to post? You should know the answer yourself then.

Sorry... I didn't take your post badly until you stated this.

If you eat meat, they say that you should try to think of some other "extravagence" you should give up. Lent is about sacrifice, not sinning for not sacrificing. It isn't a rule to make you 'burn in hell' The idea is there so you can try to understand what Jesus went through
I posted the question, because I really don't understand why you would need dispensation if it's not a sin, and what are the consequences if you eat meat without the dispensation?

Catholic guilt.

None... how about that for simple? :)

As I said before, abstaining is about sacrifice. Giving up something that is a "luxury item" during Lent. Jesus did it for us, it is supposed to remind us of all He did for us.

It isn't about getting in trouble. Why the dispensations because some people will feel guilty or won't be able to celebrate a holiday that is important to them. Some churches find that a valid excuse to give a dispensation. Personally, I don't, so I don't get why it is such a huge deal to so many anyway.

But the dispensations are there so people feel like they can celebrate w/o any guilt. Nothing else.

And the history of why on Friday has to go back with how things were run and when penance was done by all. That just kind of sat through history.

I honestly figured as an ex-Catholic you would have been taught this. That is why I responded as I did. I took it as a sarcastic kind of comment. I am assuming whomever taught you didn't really go into why things are done, but just the rules and nothing else.
