I have a question concerning a cast boot

I have to say, this is a wonderful forum, y'all are all so helping of each other. My problem is very minor, but I have a couple of questions.

I have a fracture in my heel, and am wearing a boot cast (big black thing with velcro and flat foot). I can only take it off for showers and sleeping.

My hubby, yesterday, decided he wants to go to wDW (we are crazy on WDW) I agreed, and and scrambled to get reservations and dining.

Now, I can walk, abeit slowly, but it is tiring. Should I get a wheelchair for the parks? I won't be in it all day, will that look strange if my kids are in it while I walk for a while? I don't need special lines or anything, I can wait in the lines. I won't do all the rides, just cause this thing is bulky, and I won't do anything to get it wet.

Just wanted to make sure I won't look bad for getting the wheelchair.

And - anybody know any good system for keeping it dry during an afternoon shower? I figured I would just hole up in a store and let the others go if it is raining too much.

Thanks for y'alls help.

Pushing a wheelchair will NOT be fun for your hubby. Is it your left or right foot? I'd do a scooter so that you can "drive" yourself, park it at the entrance to an attraction (where they put the strollers too) and then enjoy the attraction, and drive to the next. That way, you don't have the stress to your injury and your hubby is not having to push a wheelchair up and down the hills.

Personally,I would not let the kids "ride" with you. It is a major safety issue. If they are so young that stamina is an issue for them, then they will need a stroller of their own.

it is my right foot. yeah, hubby didn't like that part, having to push. And the kids are 13 and 15, they wouldn't ride with me, just if I was walking some, then they might ride, but just themselves.

I was afraid to get a scooter, I know they don't have as many of those, and I didn't want to take one from someone who needed it more.

And it will be crazy busy - how good a driver do I need to be?

Thanks for the help

Since your kids are teenagers, let them walk! They can take turns with your hubby pushing your wheelchair. BTW, you can rent scooters from offsite locations. :)

Using the wheelchair between rides makes sense, and even while in line. Take good care of yourself- no need to risk straining your injury. You can get walking that you'd like to do on short trips to the parks- such as going to a restaurant, or walking around where you are staying.

It does seem like a good idea to rent a scooter from offsite. That way you'll know there is one available for your use.

Best of luck on your trip.

If you haven't already, check out the disABILITIES FAQs thread. There is information there about places to rent wheelchairs and ECVs and also some links to past threads about boarding rides.

Also, in general, most attractions have what are called "Mainstream Lines", which means that the regular lines are wheelchair accessible. Most of the attrractions don't have any special lines or entrances for people using wheelchairs.

Lesia, you can use a trash bag to keep it dry during the rain. But I've gotten the air cast wet plenty of times, and they dry off fine.

A plain wheel chair is the back-up option if my reconstructed ankle is still misbehaving come November. :sunny:

I do not believe a boot cast is meant for long distance walking.

You won't look bad in the wheelchair all the time but if you get out and walk some of the time, at least somebody is going to look "at you funny". Unless you wear a tee shirt with some not necessarily true explanation such as "Re-learning to walk". Recommended reading: (children's story goes under different titles too) "The Father, His Son, And The Donkey".
