I have a question about Toy Story, Andy's family specifically

I loved this movie ... and was crying too! Since I have all boys, these shows have been one of our favorites! ... and now that my oldest is getting closer to college age, I can relate to the whole story.

I did like the ending even though now I find it even sadder he gave Woody away. :sad1:

I also assumed she was a single mom becasue even when they moved she was alone.
I was also sad at the end of 3:sad1:

I thought the same thing. When they were moving, she was driving the car. The kids were there in the car, but no dad. By the way, something that has always bothered me about that scene is that Molly is in her car seat in the front passenger seat. Andy is in the back by himself. I know it's just a movie, but that has always bugged me that they put the baby in the front seat. :confused3

Thanks everyone. Geez, I just never gave his dad a thought in the 1st two. It wasn't until mom was saying good-bye it occured to me "Where's dad?" The whole Woody as a hand-me-down makes sense, because Woody's Round Up was an old tv show, so how would Andy have a toy like that?

As for Sid being the garbage man, LOL LOL LOL! I totally missed that, I did think the garbage man was funny, but never saw that it was Sid. I laughed at what he did with Lotso, because I see tons of trucks (and school busses) with toys like that on the front.

I really need to start paying more attention when I watch these movies.

Not that garbage man, the first one when he's singing the rock music and banging on the mail box. :)

I always assumed she was a widow.

Don't know (though I guess the widowed thing makes the most sense in financial terms), but does anyone else find Andy to be just a bizarrely saintly kid?

Uh, no...:confused3 Just a nice kid, I kind of have a 17yo "saint" myself.

I cried like an idiot watching the movie myself this afternoon. I remember Michael LOVING his Woody and Buzz as a 2 and 3 year old, and now he's a big old 17yo with those dolls somewhere in a box.

When we left the movie he said it saddened him because Buzz and Woody reminded him when his Grandma and Granddaddy were alive and when everything was just "innocent".

I miss those days, too.:sad1:

Children from loving nuclear families do not go on adventures- that is why so many children's movies and books feature families that are "broken." I agree with the others that in this case, it was simply unnecessary as the humans (even Andy) are really on the periphery of the story.

Just remember that that car didn't seem to have airbags, and that's the big problem with the front seat. I don't like the actual *carseat*, but I have to remind myself that it was made in '95 and might not have had a passenger side airbag. (the things you do to deal with a movie, LOL)

If Woody was Andy's dad's toy why doesn't he ever mention it? We know from Jessie's experience with Emily that she remembers having a previous owner, so he should remember Andy's dad growing up and passing him to Andy, right?

I had to look it up. :) According to Wikipedia---

Ms. Davis is Andy and Molly's mother. Although implied, it is not clear if she's a single parent, though background information such as Ultimate Guides to the Films indicate she's a widow. She originally had brown hair during her first appearance in Toy Story, but as of Toy Story 2, she is now seen with blonde hair. She is voiced by Laurie Metcalf. She briefly appears in the Toy Story 3 trailer in a picture of Andy's high school graduation ceremony and later on when she asks Andy what to do with the toys.

I KNEW I saw her in that scene!! It's only for half a second and I whispered to the girls, did you see that? That's the real actress! They rolled their eyes. Didnt catch her in the picture of the graduation, I don't think.

We should have went together. I sobbed because I remember when my girls were toddlers they watched that movie over and over again and had Buzz and Woody and now they are practically grown up. The theater was packed and I didn't expect to be the only one crying. But I think I was. It effected me all day Saturday...made me think of all the years in between the first one and this one. My babies are teenagers. :guilty:

They way I interpret that is Jessie holds onto her memories because Emily was the only owner she had, and then she was put in a box and stored after she was dropped off at Goodwill. Because Mollie is so young (in the original), its obvious that Woody's dad hasn't been dead for very long so Woody was probably Andy's toy before the dad dies. He wouldn't have the sad memories of losing his only owner, because he has always had one

But Woody was ready to go off to storage because Andy was growing up and wouldn't play with him forever. If Woody had been an actively played with toy from box til present wouldn't he have then shared his memory with Jessie, that it didn't always happen the way it did for her.

I came from a very loving nuclear family (my parents were married for 60 years when they died) and I was most imaginative, fantasy ridden kid you'd ever imagine... to this day!

It wasn't that I was unhappy, I fantasized about things I didn't have, like brothers and stairs in a house (we grew up in NY apartments). I also wrote books about my fantasy life.

then we would've been useless together!:lmao:

My son just found his kindergarten pics and one picture showed him holding his Toy story lunchbox. To him it was a million years ago, to me it was yesterday.... :flower3:

Me too--except the opposite for me--I'm the 2nd oldest of 6, so I fantasized about having no brothers & sisters! :lmao:

Some of these posts are making me teary-eyed. My first-born son is about to turn 14, (our oldest 2 were adopted from Russia almost 3 years ago) and watching TS3 reminded me of how he's growing up. When he was about 3 or 4, he needed stitches at the hospital. He was such a good boy, and coming home we stopped at Toys R Us so he could pick out a present. He chose a Singing Woody doll with a guitar. He played and played with that Woody. It is gone now, and sometimes I wish we had saved that Woody and his Buzz doll...:sad1:

Please stop everyone. I havent even seen the movie yet and you have me in tears...

I really have no idea, and I'm already embarrased by the amount of thought I have put into an animated movie. I know that the DIS is the only place where others will understand me though

I thought the same thing of myself when I was dissecting the plot of Toy Story 2 in my mind and trying to get it to fit to what I've heard about Toy Story 3 :lmao:
