Today, in about 1 hour I have to get 2 fillings! What is the actual procedure for getting a cavity filled? Maybe knowing the procedure will keep me from being scared. Also, does it hurt? Thanks guys. I'm a nervous wreck right now!!

little neon blue "filling fairies" come and wave their wand and POOF they're filled. that's what that bright blue light is. ;)

This is if they don't use the gas on you, I've never had the gas used on me before.

They rub numbing cream on your gums, then they put the needle of novacaine in your gum. They give the novacaine time to numb the gum. They put the little drill in your mouth to drill out the entire cavity. Then they push the filling stuff in the whole until it's well packed. Then they rinse and have you spit in the little water thingy they have there. It doesn't hurt (if you feel anything-be sure to let them know though!). The drilling kinda tickles (makes the roof of my mouth tickle). The smell/taste of the drilling isn't a great scent. And you have to wait to eat or drink for the novacaine to wear off so you won't bite yourself.

It's not all that bad. Good luck.:)

I JUST got back from the dentist, Just this minute!

I had a silver filling replaced with a white one.

I would suggest you get a white filling, even though the silver ones are less expensive. The white ones are so much nicer looking:D

I go to a cosmetic dentist (he has all the latest technology) He has high-speed drills. He drilled the old filling out in less than 2 minutes.

He just rubbed a topical on my gums...no needle novicaine. It wasn't bad at all.

Hopefully, you have someone who is updated with the latest technology. He should have a t.v. screen right there in front of you that you can see the tooth after he gets the cavity out and is ready to fill. They have little wand cameras that take pictures so you can see what's happening.

Thanks, guys! Unfortunatly, my dentist doesn't have the t.v. system, that I know of. But, it doesn't sound so bad after all!

Has anyone heard of dentists using lasers to fill a cavity? They don't do it here, in PA, but I've read about it in other places.

Yes, that's the kind of white filling my Cosmetic Dentist does here on the Cape.

If they do it here, I'm sure you could find someone in your area...it just takes a lot of researching.
Maybe you could try calling 1-800dentist.

Anyways, good luck today! Are you getting a white filling?

please say yes!!

Well, now I can send you off with peace of mind!
Those silver fillings arn't that good for you, and they are old fashioned.

Let me know how you make out!
I have been to the dentist 26 times since April getting a major overhaul done on my teeth, they wern't that bad to begin with, but I like to keep the Perfect;)

Wish we got numbing cream here, our dentists just shove the big old needle straight in. Maybe we are tougher.;)
