I have a problem...

IMO you should not pay the call out charge for the phone. The phone would need to fixed regardless of whether you were there or not. I certainly would not expect my guests to pay. I wouldn't be surprised if the owner has received a bill as well. This is awful customer service from the broker, and I am sure the owners would not be at all happy. Good luck and stick to your guns

I am really sorry you are having this trouble -as you say it has tainted your vacation memories.

If you do not know how to check the owners details I can do that for you if you wish -I have helped others here this way .
Keep at them and ask why there was such a gap in between your leaving and them contacting the agent regarding the "damage" they are claiming .Do not give up on this one .

To me as an owner I would want to know what has happened in my home and get both sides.I agree with Karen it does sound as if there may have been another booking in between which maybe the owner was unaware of -it does happen if the owner is a "hands off " remote owner as opposed to a "hands on " one.

I know people are wary of renting direct rather than from an agency but as your experience shows renting from an agency you are 2 steps removed from the owner who may not know all that goes on -renting direct you are one step away and have the means of direct contact.

To me the owner needs to know that their mc is not doing their best for them
a good mc is worth their weight in gold to an absent owner .

If you need help pm me any details you have and I will do my utmost to trace the owners for you .

I hope when this is all over you may consider giving renting another go .

Thank you so much everyone...this is the latest email I received this morning

Dear Kelly,

Thanks for your email.

I asked the management whether they have pictures to prove you trashed the house or not, and I was told they didn't have them. They said they were too busy to take pictures.
Anyway, I think what you told me also makes sense.

I will go ahead refund you the $200 deposit.

Please do me a favor by emailing me your address.

Kindest regards,

Yan

I used to manage apartment buildings, so I know what kind of damage people can cause (like trying to woodchip a Christmas tree down the garbage disposal), but what I'm going to do when I head down to Windsor Hills is make sure that I take pictures of any damage to the unit and make a written list which I will email to the management company. I will also take my own pictures when I leave and email those as well.

I've never rented down at Disney, but we rent a beach house every year in NC, and have never had a problem with getting our deposit back or having the MC coming out to fix problems.

I'm glad you are getting your full deposit back.

AWESOME that's great news, congratulations! I have never heard of a MC being quite this difficult, and to answer the last poster, you don't need to email before and after pics, although it's not a bad idea to get a few just in case!!

Now...would you mind sharing with us who the MC is? At the very least if someone else is staying in this particular place they should be forewarned to take before and after pictures!

We would never charge a guest for anything you describe, just for actual damage requiring some sort of a repair, and then we would have pictures (I know, I just had one of my best friends stay with us and left muddy footprints in one of the bedrooms requiring a carpet cleaner to come out..even then..I just let it go.. /sigh...that's why we ripped out most of the carpet in our entryway...greatroom ..etc..and replaced it with tile).

I just saw your thread this morning, Momto3chicks, and soooo very glad to see that you'll be getting your deposit back!! :thumbsup2

Like others have said, sounds like another group was in the house, without the owners knowing.

I'm sorry it put a stressful end on your vacation.

:sunny:
