That I have picked up over the years! A panther lamp. A rare wooden horse toy. A rough hewn bowl. Trouble is I don't know where to take them to be appraised? Or who would sell them for me?

Can any one help me?

Sometimes local antiques dealers also do appraisals. You could call around to local shops and see who does it. I know here there is a man who does it and I beleive he charges about $10 per item.

Another option is to take a picture and send it to one of the larger auction houses. Again, this isn't a free service. We had it done years ago and paid $50 for the appraisal for one item.

As far as selling your items goes, its really a down market for antiques/collectibles. Like anything else when the economy is bad things either don't sell, or don't get the prices they used to. I used to sell a lot of antiques/collectibles on ebay but stopped as stuff just isn't selling and what is selling is going really low. I have inventory but am just waiting it out. If you go with someone local for your appraisal they might know of a collector that's interested in your items.

Tink2dw, your descriptions are awfully vague. A rough hewn bowl could date anywhere from the time of Christ up to last week, and if that isn't confusing enough the one made just last week could potentially be worth more than the ancient one...just so many variables with appraisals.
If you can pin down a more accurate description of your items and then do a bit of googling you might find some good info online yourself. Just remember the Antiques Roadshow valuations are really for entertainment value more than what you might actually get for your similar objects. Roadshow is a fun show but the variables on every item can be so diverse that it's impossible to get an accurate appraisal based on what they're showcasing.

Darcy, yeah the last few years has seen a big downturn on selling antiques and collectibles online BUT you might want to jump back into the ring. This last year has been fantastic and it's only getting better. People seem to be feeling more comfortable about spending again. I can hardly keep my store stocked!
(I don't ebay. I have an online store that has set prices for items.)
