If I am on a flight that has a lay over and changes planes, do I have to collect my luggage and check it in again? I have never been on a flight like this (I know, I was very spoiled with USAir having it's hub in Pittsburgh. *&#$%$#@ USAir NOW.) I have only been on flights where I don't change planes even if it has to stop in another city.

TIA
Kim

As far as I know - and I'm sure there is that one in a million exception -

My answer is NO. The airline takes care of all the luggage transfers for you...

No. That would require you going through security again and that is not the case. Your luggage will be tagged for your final destination and will (if everything goes the way it should) be pulled from the original plane and placed on the second plane.

Thank you. Going out I might do just carry on, but going home with a longish layover in Phillie, I don't think I want to deal with too much stuff. Just my knitting and Kindle. And of course my phone so I can be on Facebook talking with my friends.

You are right that was a dumb question ;) haha, just kidding, I remember wondering the same thing when I had my first flight like that.

So now a question for you Chirurgeon- have you had any trouble taking your knitting needles through security before? I have always wanted to take my knitting, but I am afraid they will take my needles away (I use the metal ones). Just curious- thanks.

When I went to DAP I didn't have a problem, but I had acrylic needles that time. I have asked on Ravelry and other people have told me they have not had a problem. But I think I will stick with my Knit Picks wooden or acrylic needles just to be on the safe side. I do love the new acrylic needles from them. Not as "sticky" as wood, but not as slick at metal. I just wish they came smaller than a 4. They say they are too bendy any smaller than that. Also I only use circular needles for my knitting, so the needle part is rather short anyway.

When I check bags, I always look at the luggage tag to make sure it has the correct code for the airport that is my final destination.

Also, one exception is if you ever fly internationally. When you arrive in a country you have to get your luggage to clear customs with it and then it is rechecked if you are flying on to another city.

I'm a sock knitter, and almost always travel with a ball of yarn and a pair of tiny knit picks circs on a longish cable for magic looping. No problems with security lately.

Great to hear a review of the acrylic needles. I've been wondering about them... =)

I would love to learn how to knit socks. I need to learn how to use the circular needles first, but I am glad to hear that you guys haven't had a problem with those. I think they will be easier to keep in my carry on than my giant metal ones anyway. Now I have to make a trip to the craft store :goodvibes

It was crazy after 9/11 and I had knitting needles (wooden) confiscated, along with plastic yarn needles! I haven't had a problem for a few years, but still worry about it.

When flying from another country to the US, you have to claim your luggage at the first US airport and then recheck it. However, when I flew to Germany in August, my luggage was checked all the way to my final destination. I didn't have to retrieve it and recheck it in London - where I changed planes.

I learned to knit socks on circs using Cat Bordhi's book Socks Soar on Two Circular Needles. It really helped clear up how to keep track of the whole sock knitting process.
