I believe "key" is the Bahamian pronunciation, and CC is part of the Bahamas.

I bet not as silly as the TV commercial we just saw advertising a Disney Cruise and talking about how great Castaway "KAY" is!!

And yet Grand Cayman isn't Grand "Key"man...!!

And of course, Parrot Cay is pronounced Parrot Kay.

....but if you say "Kay," people do look at you weird.
I was suprised that the Random House College Dictionary shows that Kay is the pronunciation "in most freqent use." I say "Key" and for a long time I thought the "Kay" people were just nuts :D I guess I was the ignorant nut :D

Let me close this dictionary before I lose my reputation at work of not knowing how to use one.

yes, i also wondered if parrot cay was "kay" or "key"

things that make you go hmmmmm......

....with a dictionary in my hand!!
Should be suRprised and freqUent....SORRY
I guess I don't know how to use one

I agree, I had been calling it Castaway Kay for over a year and then when we went on the second cruise I noticed that the crew call it key. Personally I like kay better. When you say key it does not sound as cool. Kinda reminds you of the Florida Keys. UGH!

I spend so much time on these boards that I've begun using our abreviations in my normal speech. My husband looks at my like I'm nuts when I say, "the CM said the weather should be nice tomorrow in CC". Thus, I avoid the Cay/Key debate and sound even sillier!

(It gets even worse when we go to WDW and I ask him if he wants me to get a PS for CBR the morning we go to MK). :earboy2:

I teach middle school English and we read a novel called "The Cay." It is about a blind boy and an old man shipwrecked in the Caribbean. In an interview with the author, Theodore Taylor, students ask him what is the correct pronunciation of his novel. He says "kay," but says many pronounce it "key" as well. Both key and cay mean the same, small islands. However, he mentions that many of the local natives refer to the word as cai (pronounced "ki"- long i sound like in "kite.") So there is a third pronunciation. Whatever the name, it is paradise.
