For our Troops in Iraq -

I just found out my best friends little sisters tour in Iraq has been extended AGAIN and she won't be home til February (maybe).
She has sent e-mails to me and her entire troops morale is down.
She is a 'weekend warrior' as her entire troup - they were suppose to be home this month! These people are missing their kids, their jobs, and their lives!

What can we do?

I am 'scraplifting' this idea -

I personally have never ventured into handmade card making - but I am going to - for them - it is the least that I can do!

With the holidays approaching I want them to know that they aren't there for nothing! That we appreciate it!

Will you help?

What better then using our craft to send them a handmade from the heart card or two!

Thanks for reading this I hope you don't mind my bugging you yet again!

Patty

A handmade card is a simple thing to do , but the joy it will bring someone overseas is priceless . I know from experience because hubby served in Operation Desert Storm . Just send us the details and we will get to work. My shapeboss has been collecting dust anyway !

Count me in! I don't make homemade cards either but I am sure I can figure something out! Even get my kids to help!

I am on a roll with these Thanksgiving cards and I have more supplies, cards and motivation than I have famiy to send them too. So, I would love to send a few for Thanksgiving!!! They definitely deserve our thanks!!!

By the way, where is her troop out of? A guy from work was supposed to be home this month too......hhhhmmmm....

your generosity always amazes me!

Spinning - great idea - maybe I'll have a card making party for DD and her friends!

Poohbear - probably - I am in MA ;)
She is in the National Guard - her original weekends were in Gardner and in Devens. They were in Fort Drum for about 3 months, then Kuwait for a couple of months before getting to Iraq just about the time they declared the war 'over' - ya right!

:)

Patty

PattyT - it may be the same crew. Not sure where his original weekends were but they did spend almost 3 months in NY before leaving...I think that's Fort Drum? I dont even know where Air bases are and DH is in the USAF!!

That would be just awful....but make "sense" (if you can call it that) ....Bush just extended all overseas to 1 yr and he left for duty in February. And he just proposed to his fiancee right before he left!

I just feel bad that they keep getting their hopes up about a return date only to be changed again. Its one thing in the military to rationalize not to believe it until you see it (orders that is)....but where you are that far away, that's hard!

Patty, I would love to help you ... I am not creative & am not into making cards, but ... I would be glad to send you a card/note, etc. that you can send to your friend.

I was on a similar campaign last year during the holidays when one of my "babies" would not be home for the holidays. I asked everyone I knew to send him a card. I took a card with me every where I went & asked people to write a note, sign it, etc. I was surprised at the friends who wrote - friends who are on my "once a year" Xmas card list didn't blink at sending a note, a package, whatever.

I know from last year that we can only send mail addressed to a specific person.

I also kept a box in the kitchen & added little odds & ends - playing cards, snacks, etc. I usually mailed him a package every five - six days. Yes, I know they feed our troops, but I wnated to make sure he had his favorite snacks :).

What a wonderful thing to do Patty. I would be happy to make some cards to cheer the troops. (I started making my own around Mother's Day and have had a really good time doing it, too.) Just pass on the details. :)

Well I've never ventured to making card but, I will sure give it a try for our troops. They deserve more than this but I'm sure a card from home would be great.

Just send the details and count me in.

Laura

count me in. Cards arn't my thing but just did invitations so I am sure christmas card would but ok. How many do you want us to make. send us the info and hi ho hi ho off to work we go.

Love to help! ! I'm a card maker and have the supplies. A co-worker loved the card I just gave her. I did a shaker box for the front. Had her fav things in it, Las Vegas junk. On the outside it said ...oh hmm well a word that has to do with dice....."C---S!" And on the inside it said "Another birdthday" Just let us know what, when and where.

I would love to help...provide details and I am good to go.....
I COULD have my boyscout troop do a few also...or would that be a bad thing! I think it might be a good idea for both the troops and the boy scouts! I will try and come up with an idea that the
boys could do!

Count me in! Are we sending them to you when we get them done? Thanks for doing this and letting us be a part of it!

we just want to put a smile on their faces!

Instead of sending them a HUGE box of cards I will mail to them once a week - that way they get something on a regular basis!

Pauline GREAT idea to have the Boy Scouts contibute - that would be AWESOME for everyone involved!

I told DD that we would have a 'Card Making party' with all of her friends - now I think I need to rent a hall for it - her list of friends keeps growing! LOL
DD took the news of Kimmie staying in Iraq harder than she took the fact that her cousin (my ONLY nephew got sent to Saudi two months ago!) But as boy are we rarely hear from him and everything is 'ok'. LOL

THANKS a TON GUys!

Just do what you can - when you can and send them my way and I will forward them!
I am thinking of sending them some disposable cameras too!
lot of $ though! I still have to mull over how to do that one!

ttfn

Patty

Do you want us to send them too you or do you have an address where we could send them ourselves?? I know they have some strict rules about what can be mailed now.

Thanks for doing this!!

Count me in too!

Since DH is full time Army National Guard from MA...and works at state headquarters...he probably even knows some of these people. I know he mentioned more than one of his friends that took the same MA to Ft Drum to Kuwait route you mentioned. We know so many people deployed (about 1/3 to 1/2 of his work) that I can't remember who is where.

I've got to go back now & read this thread for all the particulars.

Please count me in for this project. I have a new envelope and card making kit and this will be a great way to use it.
Lisa

Oh yeah. I forgot about envelope making. I picked up the Kreate-A-Lope templates at GASC last June. Making my own envelopes is so easy now.

In talking to Kim's sister last night -
I will get a list of names and addys from Kim
PM them to you - then you can send direct.
Save postage and be more personal!

She was also telling me that her parents did something like this too - they asked who didn't get any mail - and sent the homemade cookies and a note - they got a 3 page letter and picture back - and the soldier carries that note in his pocket everyday.

IT WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Fortunately because Kim is in charge of weapons (actually rather scary thought if you knew Kim - LOL) she spends a LOT of time alone - can't leave her station - so they are hooking her up with a computer line at her station 'TENT' and she is buying a laptop - I am SOOO excited! Right now I get one 'group' e-mail for her once a month or so because their online time is sooo limited!

I will keep you all posted though - have fun with the cards - I am gathering my Hallowwen Fall stuff to get started - and I think I might take a few fall foliage pictures too!

THANKS AGAIN GUYS -
YOU are the BEST!
