A local grocery store here has something called Cooking Connection. Professional cooks make recipies and give samples to shoppers, in the hope they will like the recipie and buy the ingredients to make for supper. I used to make the CC one of my regular stops while in the store, and oftentimes bought the ingredients for the featured dish. That is, until I was insulted twice in a row, by different cooks. First time, I made a comment to the cook about the many samples offered in the store. She then said, "Well, you don't even have to bother to feed your kids. Your just bring them here every day for their dinner". What nerve! Yes, we did partake of the samples, however, like I said, I also bought the featured items many times. And even if I didn't buy the featured item, I was buying other items in the store. Its not like we're bums coming in off the street for a handout. They're not a soup kitchen! Then, about a week later, we (my 2 kids and I) were waiting patiently in line for our "handout". The cook looked in my direction, when I said, (politely) 2 here, please. To which he replied "You have to wait your turn. Can't you see there's people in front of you?" People who had already been served, I might add. Well, that was the last straw. I complained to the store manager, who said he would discuss it with the CC people, but probably never did. He could have at least offered me something as a goodwill gesture, such as a $5 in store coupon, or even just a cup of coffee, just something. Well, I haven't shopped there since. According to my records, I spent $12,000 there last year, for food and pharmacy (that doesn't include what the insurance paid them). I have no intention of being treated like some pushy beggar when I'm paying that kind of money. And that's for just taking the samples they offer to everyone. I now shop at a different store, but I won't touch their samples, nor will I let my kids. After all, someone might think I'm not feeding my children and bumming off the store! BTW, the store is part of the HEB chain. They know what they can do with their samples!
