I Hate Squirrels

Does anyone have experience with getting rid of squirrels? They have found a way into my attic and are busy running around and storing nuts up there. It is hard to sleep with the noise they are making. I have talked with an animal removal company and it will cost several hundred dollars to pay them to trap and remove the squirrels. And then we have to pay to fix the damage they have caused. I really do hate these rats with furry tails. I have never in my life wanted a gun but as I watch them run up the side of my house I wish had one.

Get your own "have a heart" traps. Fix how they are getting in, or more will just come back.

Find out where they are coming in and see if you can block it off.

One got trapped inside my dh's work building. They managed to get it out with a broom but probably not a good idea to go after a cornered rodent.

I agree with this. If it is an opening that is supposed to be there, maybe try to reinforce it with some type of mesh screening.

We have found at least one spot where it looks like they have chewed a board that runs along a valley in one of the roof lines. I don't think that we can close this up until we get rid of the squirrels. We have those have a heart traps in the yard with peanut butter in them but the squirrels are just ignoring them. I am watching them run right by the traps and climb the wall by my back porch.

These animals are so destructive. I am afraid that they are already chewing on one spot in the wiring.

Looks like it might be time to spend the money to get rid of them....then repair your siding. It might cost you even more money if you continue to wait and try to do it yourself...

There is probably a nest and their winter food storage in your house and they don't want to leave it. If they are chewing everything up and going after the wiring they are going to cost you a lot more in damages than the cost to get rid of them if you wait much longer.

I agree that if you don't want to spend the money on a professional try to trap them yourself. I know here you can get them from animal control and just have to put a deposit on the cage. My FIL traps them outside of his house all of the time, then puts them in the trunk and drives them all the way on the other side of the lake and releases them. I have said to him "but what about their babies?", he doesn't care because he agrees that they are just too destructive.

What does he use to bate the traps with? I have tried peanut butter and pecans but they just pass this by. I agree with your dad. These rodents are so destructive that I am not in the least concerned with their survival. After paying a pest removal company and a roofer, I figure my cost is going to be at least $700. It is hard to "have a heart" when faced with this much money.

I think squirrels are cute! But I don't have any experience with them.

I imagine a CAT would quickly thin down the squirrel population. I doubt the cat would even need to be in the attic... the squirrels would have to come out sometime.

We had this problem and actually had a squirrel build a nest in an eave. We had to wait until the squirrel left in the Spring and then DH blocked up the opening and any areas that looked like they could become openings with wire mesh. This same squirrel comes back occasionally and tries to remove the mesh but so far so good. If she ever gives up we'll have someone out to repair the damage. Luckily, our eave is all brick except for the trim boards.

That is cheap! I started a thread about this not too long ago. Same problem. It was $350 to have them come out to put this cone thing in where they were getting in. Apparently, with that they can get out of the roof but not in. They will then repair the hole but we need to put in a new roof ridge vent or it will happen again. We are looking at $1500 just for the roof ridge vent. The little buggers are still there. We need the snow to melt off the roof before they will come again. UGH! I have been sleeping on the couch because the sound totally freaks me out. :headache:

We had a squirrel problem several years ago and I heard that putting mothballs in the attic will drive them away. We tried it without much hope, but amazingly enough, it worked. Who knew? :confused3

Squirrels chewed the wiring out of my car three times and cost us a total of $1,500. And then one of the squirrels got into the attic and made its way into the rest of the house. My tolerance for them went out the window. We trap them with haveaheart traps.

Yikes! I haven't talked to the roofer yet. At least I will be prepared. Honestly squirrels are just so vile. How did they ever get the reputation for being cute?

You'll have much better luck if you put the traps in the attic. Squirrels are usually outside during the day and that's a good time to set up the traps. I trapped seven squirrels in the attic one year. (One at a time, since I only had one trap.) They completely ignored the trap outside.

I do have a cat and she is great at catching field mice and chipmunks. I think that the squirrels must be too hard and too mean to catch. I let her out this morning to chase a squirrel off of the porch. It got away by running up the bricks (and probably into the attic). My cat's response was to go sit by the spot where the chipmunks nest.

Moth balls work but Critter Ridder works better and doesn't smell as bad.

Lol.... we have a "pet" squirrel. we buy peanuts for it at the grocery store. we have his feeder attached to the house beside the window so we can see him, and his name is Joey. I'm guessing I would not be happy to have all his kin move into my attic, but fortunately he seems content with the roof over our porch. :goodvibes
racoons on the other hand....
