My school district is all kinds of screwed up. Schedules came out today, and lo and behold they TOTALLY screwed mine up.

We worked everything out last year before school ended. I'm supposed to be attending the vo-tech for Health Occupations (half a day every day, all year) , and then come back to school and take core classes. Vo-tech counts towards your electives credits, and the core classes are Chemistry, English 11, Algebra II, and American Issues. It was agreed I would take Honors American Issues, and the rest of the classes would be regular Academic.

Nope. On paper it says vo-tech is wiped out, when I call my guidance counselor I'm still going to vo-tech. Both on paper and according to the guidance counselor I'm in ALL honors core classes. We get letters every summer as to which books we need to read, and I only got the one letter for American Issues. I read that book already. According to the school, I was supposed to get the letter for Honors English 11. For that class we have to read two summer reading books, plus essays.
Kicker? They scheduled me for Fall Semester. School starts in a week, and they expect me to read and write everything by the time school starts.

I'm going into the school tomorrow and getting my schedule fixed. It's not that I can't handle honors courses, but I can't handle honors english in a week. They can put that class in the spring semester and I'll be fine. I knew this was going to happen because my school screws up everything.

i've worked in all four guidance offices of a high school. and i made schedules, did transcripts, fixed problems, registered students, and organized scholarship materials.

guidance counselors have very little to go off of, if a schedule has special instructions. they can only input it into the computer to the best of their abilities. sometimes things are put into the computer wrong. its called human error.

it isn't even your school district, your guidance counselors who made those errors, and its their job to fix them, and they will.

i guess i just don't see the big deal in a mis-scheduling.

Same here.. I made sure last year I visited my counselor and had my schedule perfect that way I wouldn't have to worry about it when school started. We don't have Summer assignments in any classes, even honors, but I still made sure to get it taken care of. I guess just next time make sure you check-up with them a few times (I visited three times) to make sure all is in order.

I definitely understand why you're frustrated. My school is the same way. So, no matter how many times you check your schedule it will still be messed up. If I remember correctly, didn't they mess up your schedule with the vo-tech thing before or something?

My high school was HORRIBLE about scheduling!!!!! There was 3000 of us or so, so it's understandable that mistakes happen. But every year there was the same old crap with tons and tons of people. People would be scheduled for two classes in the same class period or not have a class period at all. They had to fix the schedules by grade level and, I think, last name. There would be lines and lines all around the offices of people waiting to get their schedules fixed, and it wouldn't be uncommon for someone to wait around hours every day for up to two weeks waiting to get their schedule fix. I think a few times some people didn't even get their schedules fixed right for a month.

So yeah, I know how you feel. I hope you can get your schedule fixed soon!

I've been doing that since before the last school year ended. I've called throughout the summer to make sure everything was okay, and my mom went into the guidance office when I got the letter for honors american issues.

We had EVERYTHING worked out, and my guidance counselors, my principal and assistant principal, and the guidance counselor at the vo-tech were all in compliance. Heck, my school district even sent me the information for orientation at the vo-tech. There is no way that was human error.

Yeah, they messed my schedule up in the middle of the summer. Called them and they said it was all worked out, and we even had a copy of the revised schedule.
And it's not like this was a little mis-scheduling. Like, getting Photography class instead of Child Development. No, it was not like that at all - my schedule was completely opposite of what it was agreed to be. They wiped out all vo-tech (which is pretty major - you go every day, all year, for half a day). Switched 3 of my core classes into honors, instead of regular (academic) classes. The electives were ones I hadn't even picked on the sheet the year before. (And before anyone says it was "class availability", it wasn't. We've never had issues with class availability, they can always squeeze you into a class if you ask.)

That's why summer homework is lame.
Because otherwise, switching classes wouldn't be a big deal.

My school always screws up royally, but I can't make a big fuss out of it. Last year they had me in the same class twice, once in French and then again in English.

then its the computers.

and thats one of my biggest pet peeves. getting someone in a closed class requires calling the central office (some time even the state offices) and arguing with the people running the class numbers, then begging them to open one up. :headache:

As I said on Facebook, my school is the same way :headache:

Our Guidance Department is 100% useless.

(And our head of Guidance is a total b****)

Our classes are never closed though. They always keep a few slots open just in case. Other times they do trade offs. Like, if Kid A got Foods and wanted Art, while Kid B got Art and wanted Foods. They'll trade spots. Our classes usually have about 30 people in them, maybe more. The only time I've been in a class with under 20 kids was a remediation class.

ETA: And I just realized this may have come up, but the vo-tech was definitely expecting me. I met with their guidance counselor, head of the health occ. dept., and the schedule lady in March. Health occ. lady wasn't fanatical about me going, but they all said if I wanted to do it I would be allowed. We all met again in June after orientation, and I was definitely placed on the schedule list.

It's almost always the computers that mess it up. In grade 9 we used bubble sheets for last years classes and everyone in the school had messed up schedules.
This year we wrote them out by hand and that's basically what the guidance counselors have been working on since. Putting them in by hand on the computer. Time consuming really.

I'm sorry, that really stinks, I totally see your problem, 100%

I'm in 8th grade, which is still middle school here, and I'm taking Algerbra I which is a highschool credit. I specifically asked NOT to be with the hardest math teacher, it would just be too much on my plate, yet I got him. I knew it was going to happen, my school screws everything up, also.

I didn't have any major scheduling issues besides having to switch gyms halfway through the year, but I feel your frustration.
I just found out today that I have two huge essays to do for my AP Gov&Pol. class. On top of the essays I have to do for AP Enviro. Sci. that I've been procrastinating on. My summer reading for AP Lit. I knocked out in the beginning of summer, but only because I really enjoy reading.

The fact that I didn't get the GOPO work was purely my own fault and I don't have anyone to blame besides myself, but I can still sympathize with your frustration. It's pretty annoying.

:( That stinks.
I hate when schedules get messed up. It always stressed me out when there was a problem with mine (Maybe because my GC was never really eager to help. They just acted annoyed when you asked to be switched). Even in college it's stressful.. we have to register online. This past semester it took me 2 hours and 5 phone calls to get signed up. I thought I was gonna have a panic attack because there were only a certain number of slots for nursing classes and I was terrified I wouldn't get in.

Anyway, I understand your frustration & I hope this gets resolved soon!

My school district handles it's money in the weirdest ways.

- Last year, one of the debates was paying the vo-tech $50,000 for busing. The school district then spent $700,000 to repave a parking lot that was not in desperate need of repaving. There weren't even any potholes!
- The MAJOR debate was whether or not to wipe out the entire music program because it "Cost too much". Our music program does their own fundraising, the school pays for very little! Nevermind the fact our music program is award winning and has won the ACC several years in a row.
- In the middle school, the cheerleaders got brand new uniforms every year. The football and field hockey teams have been using the same equiptment for years. I know my FH jersey was 12 years old, and I played 3-4 years ago.

Vocational and Technical Institute. High schoolers can go to the local county vo-tech and take "trades" courses. They go to school part time taking all the core classes they need to graduate, while also learning a skill or two to benefit you, should you plan not to attend college. I'm going because I want to cover my behind and get my CNA certification before apply for nursing schools. It's going to add to my application, letting colleges know I already have experience. It'll also benefit me because I'll be able to work throughout college if I need to.

My school system has to be worse.
XD

So get this, all of our computers have Y2K pass stickers on them (which means that they're older then the 1990's) and windowsXP (which is a newer software)...so the computer freezes a lot and it's SO annoying when you're working on projects because I'll be typing and after one letter it'll stop..for OVER 30 seconds...and type the next letter

yet we spent all of our money buying smart boards for EVERY TEACHER (even PE and Band) when NONE of our teachers EVER use them. (seriously, most of them still have the plastic on them).

We ran out of money so the school district asked the students to bring in plain white printing paper.

Our school is really crappy and falling apart so they decided to drop what they were doing (in this HORRIBLE economy) and basically redo our ENTIRE school.

They send letters (that aren't personal OR important) in those foamy folders (which are EXPENSIVE).
They got our schedules wrong TWICE. (for the same year, same semister)
we still haven't gotten our real one yet and they're like "well, to SAVE money" (what a loaf of crazzle) "we will give you your schedule on the first day of school in first block" and of course im like "well...what IS my first block?" xD

My teachers put me in honors classes, but the computer system put me in Gen. Ed.

Our back to school night consists of "this is what your child isn't doing for me" "well, did you tell THEM that?" "no, we feel the need to tell YOU first"

*rolls eyes*
