Now that DVC has changed for 2008 the 120 day rule my use year stinks. Here is my problem DH and I love to go the 1st week of Dec. When we bought into DVC our guide pushed a March UY thinking we would like to go every July. Before with the old system if we canceled at 31 days prior to our Dec trip our points of 182 would be able to bank by Nov 31st at the 50% mark. Now I have to cancel at Oct 28th for 100% of my points or nothing. Thanks DVC this sucks thinking about selling. Any suggestions?:confused3

what or who made your guide think that you would usually travel in July?

If you travel in December, a march use year isn't ideal either with the new rules or the old. If you had ever cancelled your trip less than 30 days ahead of travel date you would still only have until March to use the holding account points.
I don't doubt that March isn't a great use year for you, however the new rules don't really make it much "worse" than the old. The bigger question is still why would the guide think you'd usually travel in July? Have your vacation habits changed? If so, there's a good chance they will change again in the future.

I don't see the problem.

If you have a December 1 reservation, you would have to cancel it by November 1 to avoid points going into a holding account.
Your new 100% banking window for a March UY goes until October 31.

July is our wedding anniversary. Did not know at this time Dec would be a better fit for us.

I knew that. However we had Nov 30th to bank 50% of our points and Dec 31st 2 months prior to the end of our use year for 25% of our points. Now it is 100% or nothing. I feel that current members should have been able to vote on the new system.

Could be worse...I had a December use year with one of my favorite times to use points being in the fall. Fortunately I'm selling because otherwise I'd be in a use it or lose it position on most of my reservations.

Sorry to hear that this has caused you trouble.

Now, I'm starting to wonder if I screwed up.

I also have a March UY. Spring Break (always mid March for us) is our "must do" trip to WDW. My logic was to have new UY points available just prior to this time period & also maximize banking deadline under the new 4 mo/120 day rule.

Hope I got this right. if not, dang.

I hear your pain....

I think that losing 50 or 75% of one's points is:scared1:

You done good, Man. :thumbsup2 With March use year you will have the maximum time to reschedule (if an emergency happens) or bank points. You are to be commended for figuring this out. We had no clue--just bought what was offered. Lucky for us it has worked out perfectly.

Ok, just started studying up on the DVC, and I want to know, how do you determine the best UY? We normally vacation at the end of August, so what would be best for us?

I don't like the new system either, but I don't think your situation is as bad as you think.

If your trip is the first week of December and you need to cancel, you would have to cancel pretty close to Nov 1 in order to avoid holding account. This year, for example, you would probably be looking at Nov 1-2 as a cancellation deadline. If you cancel on Oct 31, you bank - so for all practical purposes, you have 100% banking right up until your holding account deadline.

If you cancel a December ressie later in November (within 31 days of arrival), it doesn't matter when your banking deadlines are. Those points would be in holding account and points in holding cannot be banked at any time during your UY.

Unless I am completely misreading your explanations, you are talking about a very narrow window (1-3 days) where the new policy would have any effect on you at all. And you may actually benefit from the new program because you can bank 100% of your points two months later.

If you normally travel in Aug any UY a few months prior would be great. Don't let this thread scare you. UY shouldn't be a major dilema as long as there is good planning. But one must admit crap happens and hopefully everything works out.

Read JimMia post, very well put and explained it as I understand this situation.........

The one regret I have about my DVC purchase is the UY. We always travel in Sep & have a Dec UY. We just bought what was offered and didn't know any better.

I agree.......when we bought I wasn't sure how UY would affect our travel plans and it was not a topic of conversation with our guide. We never thought that it would really matter. In some cases, like yours, I can see that it would be a pain since your scheduled vacation time falls with in the 4 month window.

With the new rule how would you like a Apr UY and like to travel for 3 weeks in March??? Did have any clue either when we bought in in 2000.:confused3

If you only take a trip once a year in August, then a June or August Use Year may work out best for you. That way, if you need to cancel your August trip for some reason, you have plenty of time to re-use or bank your points.

I have a Dec. use year and our long trip is always end of Oct./beginning of Nov. Am I upset about the new rules? No. It is what it is. I knew going in that rules could be changed.

At the moment I have a 2BR SV booked at Boardwalk from 10/27 through 11/05. As it turns out I cannot go this year BUT the friends I travel with are still going. Mutual FL friends will be using the 2nd BR instead of me.

It's the first time I cannot go on a trip planned 11 mos. out (and hopefully the last time). At least I can look forward to going in Dec. for a long weekend!
