Why oh why would any sane person subject themselves to this torment??? It is the LEAST user-friendly system ever devised. It makes using windows look like kindergarten! You need a PhD in computer science to do ANYTHING!!! Stupid DH...makes me so mad. He decided some time ago that we were done "suckling the corporate teat" of Microsoft and IBM and decided to switch us from windows to LINUX. I had a pretty good grasp of the computer univers with windows and most of the time I could figure out how to fix something if it went wrong. Now that we have Linux, I feel like a total loser. just now I tried to print a form I downloaded (don't get me started on how ridiculous it is to download stuff) and the printer wouldn't work. I had to actually CALL DH at work to have him try to talk me through fixing it. After a Half hour of him trying to guide me from screen to screen and put in different passwords and try different things and him treating me like the IT guy that they used to have on SNL (you know, the one who would yell "MOVE!" at the employees who wanted him to fix their computers...) I finally said forget it!

This is the dumbest system ever. Yeah the programs are free and yeah you don't have to woryy about crashes in the system, but I'm tired of having to need a 12 page manual to do simple stuff. When I got an ipod for my birthday I was all excited. I handed the itunes disk to DH who said "Uh...duh, we have Linux, that won't work with the system...let me see if Linux has a comprable program"...THREE weeks later I'm finally able to download music but it is the most complicated program I've ever dealt with.

I HATE IT!!!!!!!!!!

I know exactly what you mean, I am resident geek(when it comes to windows) around here. All the friends and family call me at all hours for windows help.

But trying to put MythTV and linux on the kids computers has humbled me.

Dh spends hours...literally hours (until I finally come into our computer room and DEMAND he stop messing around and come to dinner or bed). H'es trying to figure out a program to edit our vacation videos. He's obsessed with trying to make it work and it just isn't. The problem with Linux is that it isn't regulated or anything. The programs are all designed and written by random people around the world who then put the program out there (when it works) for anyone to use...which in theory is great (haha...computer-socialism), but it's a tremendous pain in the **** for the rest of us "normies"!

go and buy yourself a cheaper laptop/computer and don't let him touch it!

I Love Linux!!!! but only at work not for my home office....Linux is great for programmers and Large Computer applications. It is a pain for home use when all your other hardware (cameras, printers, ipods, etc)..
Buy a cheap laptop for your else.....and buy a good lock also. :rotfl2:

i love it-but-im a geek-and the thing with Lunix-its not a problem just a thing-is that windows does alot of things in the back ground for you that you have to tell lunix to do on a command line-tough if you are a point and click person. But there are virtually no viruses out there that impact it-and it has great security.

Linux is complex and hard to use for most home hardware, sometimes as simple as a wireless router - mine never worked - and it's just not worth it. Windows may not be the "best", but it's easy and convienient. And as much as I think this is the wrong way to say, it's just a computer. Use Windows because that's what's easy to use/we know how to use it. You don't have to worry about being secure/whatever reason your hubby switched! Just be safe on Windows and scan for viruses, etc.

Also - if people use linux, it will begin to get viruses, just like Windows. If the userbase grows, that's what will happen. Same deal with Firefox browser. Everyone thinks it's the most secure browser in the world but now that it has a lot of users, it's getting more exploits. I don't know why people cheer on the adoption by more and more people of Firefox - it only means more exploits! Slow down, Firefox! LOL
