I feel your pain.

DS14 is a freshman at an arts high school. They are having a Halloween carnival and a dance next week, PLUS they are supposed to go to school in costume. I KNEW he would put it off and then spring it on me that he needs a costume. We looked at Party City and there is nothing. Part of the issue is that he wears glasses and is darn near blind without them. He can't wear a mask over them, and he HATES make-up. Which is a bad thing for a Theatre kid, but we'll deal with stage make-up when we have to.

He came home Wednesday and said he is going to be working in the haunted house as the chainsaw massacre guy. Oh, GOODY!

I bought him a pair of jeans on clearance at Target and told him he can do whatever he wants to them - cut them up, put fake blood on them, whatever. We will have to get a shirt and figure out mask vs. make-up this weekend. Sigh.

This is the costume my middle DD did a couple of years ago. She had a blast making it and everyone had good comments on it.

It's not the candy, that part I like. It's the costumes. When my kids were little, it was really easy and kind of fun. I would go and pick out a Winnie the Pooh or Strawberry Shortcake costume and they would look cute. Now they are 11 and it's not so much fun anymore. Since they have started to get involved in the process, it has gotten to be a nightmare. The last few years are a battle of tears trying to find "something to be for Halloween"....my daughter is not so bad. She usually can find something to be. My son, on the other hand is a "challenge" let's call it.
This year the school is having a Halloween event. My other kids went to this and they didn't wear a costume, which is optional. They have a haunted house, games, food, etc. There is no costume contest or parade or anything like that. He came home today and announced that he wants to wear a costume. So I begged my dd22 to take him to the store after dinner. I don't feel well and after working all day, I was exhausted. I also know how he is about shopping - never can find anything, nothing is good, etc.
Sure enough, they went to 3 stores - Walmart, Target and Kmart and he came home empty handed. He said all the costumes he wanted were in adult sizes and the rest were little kids costumes. My dd22 tried to guide him to help him find something, but nothing was right.
I feel bad because I know it is partial peer pressure that is leading him to feel that he has to wear a costume because "everybody" will be wearing one. But I refuse to go to a costume store and pay $30+ for something he will wear once. When they were in grade school I bought them costumes which they wore in their parade and then TOTing. They cost about $15 or so and they usually wore them more than one year. I wish he could just go to the school tomorrow and have a good time with his friends. I'm sure that not all of them will be wearing a costume.

Oh no!! Older kids scare me.

I don't want my kids to grow up....I like impressing them with store bought costumes!!!
