In my A/P class, we have a group case study. It's due next Monday. We've been getting pieces each lecture with 3-4 things to do....wonderful.

Anyway- my original group was made up of 5 people-
myself- 29, outgoing
my cousin-mid 30's outgoing (sort of funny huh..)
girl A- young- I'm guessing 20, very shy girl
girl B- early 30's - struggling with a/p
girl C- late 40's- VERY thick accent, easily confused by english language....

So we start- all 5 of us, meet after the 1st class, divide up the questions- off we go.

Meet again- after about 10 minutes in the student lounge, discussing the answers, and going over the new info- girl C stands up and says "I study better alone" and leaves........

I speak to the professor regarding this, as our answers should be similar, though it was stated, if we strongly disagree, we can have different answers, but for the most part- each one of us should hand in a case study that looks pretty darn close to one anothers. If she's not going to meet with us, well....

Monday- lecture- we are to meet after the class to go over the last part, and make sure we're all set.

Find out Girl B has dropped the class...Girl C is not in class, so myself, cousin, and A meet and finalize what we're doing...

Now what kind of stupid group project can you have when 2 out of 5 are not even in your group.

I'm now finishing up my case study paper, and will compare with the other 2 that show up tomorrow and will hand them in on Monday- but shesh if the 3 of us get A's because we've been working hard and together, on this- what about girl C....she's missed the boat...what to do what to do......

I HATE group projects and we have 2 more of these stupid things this semester

You have my sympathy. Group projects almost always cause problems. I hated ending up in a group because I would get stuck with a control freak and the inevitable lazy person who did not even contribute to the project but was happy to share my grade. Looking back, I see that it was good experience because I still find myself dealing with control freaks and lazy people who are happy to take credit for other people's work.

Good luck with the project!

:rotfl: Me too! I'm doing group work for university at the moment. Yesterday our group got chosen at random to go first.

I don't mind, we have to do it some time anyway, but a girl I'm working with is with our lecturer right now kicking up an almighty fuss.

If she spent more time working with us and less time making a fuss we'd probably have no problem with going first!

:grouphug: I hated group projects in college/grad. school too. I always seemed to get assigned to a "group" that consisted of frat guys who were either too busy drinking/drugging to do the work, or else were simply not capable of doing the work :( There's just nothing like having to do the work of 3 people so you can get your 1 grade  Hopefully the other 2 in your group will somehow be penalized for not participating in the group. After all, it's certainly not your fault or the fault of the other 2 who are working hard at this project.

I hate group projects too. I know I was in a statistics class and were were doing a HUGE project that was half our grade. My "group" kept scheduling meetings when I couldn't be there-I was the athletic trainer for the college as well and I HAD to be a practices. They didn't want to meet in the evening for what ever reason. They went to the prof and said I wasn't helping. I went to the prof and told them what was really happening. He made them work around my schedule better.

In your situation I would do the project with the 3 people that are there and don't put that other persons name on the project. Since she opted to not help, she shouldn't get any credit. I would also make it clear to the prof that she had NO part of your project.

I hate group projects too, if you cant pick your group...theres a couple i have had this semester where our professor has let us choose our group....one of my best friend is in a couple of my classes so w ework together since we know we both do an equal amount of work..

Let me make this perfectly clear: I HATE GROUP PROJECTS!

There I feel better now.
My 8th grader has had to do 3 group projects already- the middle school for this area is 15mins away. It is not easy to get the kids together because the other kids in his class live near the school. The first two we did most of the work the group only got a 70 on it. I met with the teacher regarding another issue and brought up the group project and was told "that is life- in a job if one person drops the ball the whole group suffers".
His next group project for this class they had to bring in materiels to build a robot in class(not a working one). He and his friend decided that my DS would bring in three soda cans, a big jug, tinfoil, straws, two paper towel holders and a few other things along this line. The friend had to bring in tape, glue, scissors. Knowing this friend and his forgetfulness I sent my son in with everything he would need to get this done. Good thing-the kid brought in nothing. At least the teacher noticed and reduced his grade by 10 points because of it.

I have many more of these stories

I just PM'd you.

BTW, I used to LOVE it when professors said this to me:

<I met with the teacher regarding another issue and brought up the group project and was told "that is life- in a job if one person drops the ball the whole group suffers". >

My response is "how on earth would YOU know?" These people had never been out of academia and into real life in their lives. Oh, and the reality of it was that, in the real world (of engineering anyways), when people dropped the ball, most of the time they got burned for it!! I can't recall one instance where someone in the "group" dropped the ball and everyone else paid for it. If the software has bugs, it's not like the hardware person is going to be the one to fix it, KWIM? It's fairly obvious who dropped the ball in the "real world". The "real world" line is a load of you-know-what IMHO.
