I happen to have the privilege: listening to some very ungrateful young people today

In the mall.

I'd guess they ranged in the 18-22 age group.

I was standing in line to pay for something, and they were sitting on a bench cutting down an older couple that happened to be walking by holding hands.

By older I mean senior citizens, 65-70 years old.

All I could do is shake my head.

What I wanted to do was walk over to these "got the world by the balls" high and mighties and teach them a lesson....but it wouldn't have done any good.

When your young, everything seems to be yours. You don't yet have any wrinkles, or a mortgage for that matter. All they worry about is running home to IM their friends, what time is the first class tomorrow, and how late can I stay up tonight and still be awake enough for class.

All they worry about is how shiney their cars are, how "cool" they look to their peers and that "they're never gonna look like that when they're old."

Too bad they don't know that the real laugh is on them.

That older couple had more than they'll ever have.

Great thread Blondie.

DH is going to be 57 in a couple of months, and I am going to be 53 nextmonth. We still walk hand in hand on many occasions. I never want to lose that "feeling". :sunny:

I hope we are still like that in our 60's and 70's. :)

That breaks my heart-about the old couple-they didn't hear any of the comments did they?

I'd like to blame this on rampant, widespread crass commercialism-
all these industries catering to the under-18 set is unforgiveable.

I think teens are intelligent but impressionable-and so much of popular culture continues to appeal to their most base instincts.

If they had less economic power...?

The magic age where you know everything.....how foolish!

I apologize on behalf of my teenage species :( We're not all like that!! I swear!;)

That burns me up! I can't stand people that derive pleasure from laughing or ridiculing others.

I witnessed something similar last week while waiting at a red light. We were on our way to Target and I was driving. We came to a red light and while waiting for the light to change, we noticed a young man (probably in his early 20's) pressing the pedestrian button at the intersection. We noticed him because he was making uncontrollable upper body movements. My DH later told me that he has seen him before at the same intersection.

I looked to my left and there were two teenage punks in their shiny new car pointing and laughing their heads off at this young man. Their windows were rolled down. I couldn't sit there and say nothing.... it was bigger than me. Just as I rolled down my window, the punk in the passenger side was sticking his head out the window and cupped his hands to his mouth as if to yell something. I called their attention and told them they should be ashamed of themselves for laughing at this young man, as this could happen to anyone. It could be their brother or a child that they may have one day. Yes, I said that. Right then, they rolled up their window. The light changed and they took off.

My DH was shocked, he couldn't believe I would do something like that. Then he told me that I was right in telling them off. If I had to do it again, I would. It was totally out of character for me, but like I said it was bigger than me....

When they get that age they will long to have what those older people have. Still having a love like that in your twilight years has to be one of the most wonderful things in the world.

I am sorry to hear that this happened.

You find rude people in all different age groups, though. I am proud of the fact that I have never been in a situation like this, and have never seen my friends do it, either. Not all teenagers are rude and cruel, and not all teenagers think like those teens and young adults, either. :(

I think we should wish for a proper pay back for those "young ones"---I know lets let them get to be 65-70. I know when I see younger ones being mean hearted I just laugh and think to myself " THESE ARE THE ONES GOING TO BE PAYING MY SOCIAL SECURITY---YIKES". Don't worry they'll get old one day and think about how stupid they really were.

Luckily most most teenagers would never consider acting like that. Still, there have always been a large enough number of them in every generation to be really annoying. I remember seeing kids like this when I was was a teen and being embarassed by them.

Fortunately, most (not all, but most) of these brats will grow up to become reasonable adults. Then they will look back in sadness for the pain and embarassment their behavior might have caused.

now i'm vomiting, AND my eyes are rolling uncontrollably! help!

(not at your posts, wdwH or carrie, i liked yours. :D)

What is THAT supposed to mean Spago?

Go ahead, fill us with your maturity!

Beautifully said Michelle!!! Those were my thoughts exactly!!! I hope some day very soon those kids will start smiling when they see a couple like that, instead of cutting them down.

sure there are stupid, rude teens. just as there are stupid, rude children, stupid, rude adults, and stupid, rude senior citizens. i hate these kinds of threads because they always turn into teen-bashing parties. generalizing teenagers into one huge lump of ignorant, cruel people pisses me off to no extent. sorry blondie, but that's how i feel.

You wanna know why I am pissed?

Because they could've been my parents. And Spago, one day you'll be old enough to realize how cruel and inconsiderate a few words can be.

I agree, not all 18-22 year olds are like the ones I happen to hear tonight.

There are many mature and wise beyond their years younger people out there.

Unfortunately, of late, I haven't met any.:(

blondie, i totally understand why you're upset. i would probably have been pissed if i'd seen that. however, once the generalizations about teenagers begin, that's where i get even more pissed.
All they worry about is how shiney their cars are, how "cool" they look to their peers and that "they're never gonna look like that when they're old."
if by "they," you were referring to the particular teenagers you saw at the mall today, and no other, then i apologize to you. however, this appears to be a generalization about how all teenagers are shallow.

Yes-generalizations are wrong and stupid-but in this particular thread we are talking about a particular age group exhibiting a PARTICULAR attitude found primarily in that age group-NOT that ALL members of that age group exhibit it. 30-somethings can act like a**es-not all of them, certainly-but it's a different TYPE of arrogance.

We all have stuff to fix-Blondie just wanted to highlight a particular grievance, an incident-I'm sure she doesn't find fault in general with ALL teens.
