I can't believe some people. My son manages the park district indoor pool. He is also a lifeguard. Last year, he was his marching band's drum major so he's comfortable keeping everyone on the straight and narrow (i.e., giving orders
). He also takes the safety aspect of his job very seriously.
Today an older woman comes to the pool to swim laps. She's chewing gum. Chewing gum is not allowed at the pool. My son politely asks her to dispose of her gum. She tells him no.
He tells her he's sorry, but he has to enforce the rules and she can't swim with gum. She says, "what are you, 18, and you're telling me what to do?" She leaves in a huff.
My son leaves the front desk for a while and notices that she's swimming and still has gum in her mouth. He asks again if she would dispose of her gum. She refuses again and asks if he's going to call security. He says he might have to. She says she knows they don't have on site security. He says ma'am, our security is the town police! Finally she leaves, still chomping on her gum.
My son's manager says she has his back but I'm sure we haven't heard the end of this. There are some people in our community with such a sense of entitlement. But if the kids do something wrong, there's zero tolerance.
Maybe the woman has a screw loose but I don't understand why you'd dig in your heels over gum. It takes all kinds.

I work at a YMCA and our lifeguards get literally screamed at for asking adults to do or not do something. Then whoever it is will call the exec and say the lifeguards were rude to them!
