And I haven't even been there 2 full months. How cool is that? Late Friday afternoon I was called into the Office Administrators office. And when I got there I saw, the administrator, a paralegal, and the HR Manager. The immediate thought that went through my head was, "Oh crap, I've done something wrong haven't I?" But that wasn't the case. The administrator told me that we are getting a fairly large case in starting next week and that they were going to need some help with it, and they thought that I could help them out. I thought to myself, "Great, I'm going to be moved to this case to do nothing but copying...something I didn't want to do." But then she told me that they were going to move me up into a Jr. Litigation Paralegal position, and the HR Manager then said, "That if at the end of this case if you like what you are doing then you can stay where you are, or go back to records." I'm was in total shock. To get promoted in less than 2 months of being on the job. I'm really excited by it, but I'm scared at the same time. This is something that I've never done before and I don't want to screw up...and then there's, I don't want to turn into one of those paralegals that I complain about. I at least have the knowledge of how to treat people in the copy center (having worked in the copy center for several years). Wow, I'm still in shock...well, that was my good news everyone. Thanks for listening to me.

Congrats - the same thing happened to me the first week at a new job - when I was called into the HR VP's office, I was thinking I was in deep doo doo! I was remembering that feeling when I started reading your post!

Hope you enjoy the new position!

Not yet, and I wouldn't expect them to right at first...seeing as how I don't have any experience as a paralegal and I'm going to be trained for a couple of months. I'm hoping that after my 90 day probation period that they would discuss some kind of pay raise. Because I'll tell you this, I'm not going to do paralegal work on an office services persons pay. But again, I wouldn't expect anything in the very beginning. Does anyone have any idea as to what a paralegal makes? Would anyone be willing to venture a guess? I did a search on salary.com and what that site told me, at least for Boston, is somewhere around $38k a year...is this about right?

I don't know about Boston, but in San Diego (a much smaller cosmopolitan Community) the salaries range from about $43k for a an entry level paralegal to $98k or more. I know a large aerospace contractor whose paralegal salary ranges are from $68k to $118k. No kidding! Heavy duty senior litigation paralegals make excellent money, and bill their hours out as attorneys do. One caveat, paralegals spend more time in the office working on litigation than anyone else. Working in a large firm, you will be expected to maintain a minimum number of billable hours towards client work, and you will be expected to log every minute that you work on a case. California enacted legislation a few years ago to define who could call themselves a paralegal, including the requirement of completion of an ABA-approved paralegal certificate program which takes anywhere from 1 to 2 years. Their intent, of course, was twofold; one, to ensure paralegals had the proper training and two, to ensure that disbarred attorneys would not sully the profession further by becoming employed as such.

Congratulations on the job! It's hard work but it's fascinating. I have been a paralegal for 15 years and love it! You will too! :flower:

Very cool! Congrats. Looks like your hard work is being rewarded!

P.S. I bow down to the people in our copy center. They make my life easier every single day. Amen to them.
