I got my military guy!

Glad you double checked!

You only got one? How come they sent me two names?

We got our soldiers after about 24 hours- THREE names! We have one K9 handler and two young ones in Kutwait. Their requests were touching- the dog handler asked for blow pops and "just stuff for the dogs".....the young man and woman asked for toiletries and "maybe a book". My children are excited...I think I know what we are spending our Saturday doing- letter writing and shopping. This waiting for the war is really taking its toll on me (and I can ONLY imagine what it must be like to actually be over there). I finally feel like my family can DO something. I feel so helpless and, well, priviledged and lazy just sitting here in my nice safe house typing on the DIS while these fine young (and old!) people are protecting my behind! May God bless each and every one of them.

I got mine this morning. One has no requests the other needs lots of toiletries. I'll be heading out to Walmart soon...anyone wanna come with me?

Lisalj, I requested a person with the K-9 unit, maybe they count that as 2 (dog and Handler?). You are right about helping regardless of our views. I may not like the idea of going to war, but I do feel we need to support our troops. My son who is 14 has talked about joining the military for two years now. The mother in me wants to scream no way, but I bite my tongue and say if he does I will be very proud of him (which I truely will be). My prayers go out to mothers and fathers that their children will return home safe.

Val, I think we must have the same guy LOL! He requested blow pops and stuff for his dog Aaron.

No my friend got him, she's not a DISer though.

My guy is Jason P....his request DOES say that he on behalf of his unit and himself- so maybe he is the "lead guy". My guess is they have a gaggle of handlers/dogs and they all need stuff. Don't care- just want to help.

Yep Val we have the same guy! I'm glad, this way I know his unit will be well taken care of. I am going over to the pet store today to see if they have dog boots and to pick up some kong toys. My goal is to get a package sent by the middle of the week.

I just sent an email signing up asking for a k9 handler also
I said its find if they don't have one
I already know someone who is in Kuwait in the Air National Guard and I will have his address on Monday
so his package will go out this week
so if I could get someone and a dog that would be neat also
I am having fun putting these boxes together
dog shopping will be fun also

Crazy,
That is mine, too. Val and i will be sending things. Let us know what you will be sending!

I am worried about this no carton bigger than a shoe box deal. One of my guys is a chaplain and he asked for Puffs Plus. Well, one of those suckers would take up the whole box!

How about taking the kleenex out of the box, putting it in a ziplock and squeezing the air out? I doubt they would care how the kleenex was packaged.

As far as the size of the box....use the large shoebox as a guideline. I've been shipping a box a week for the past 6 weeks and each one has been the large Priority Mail box from the post office. The boxes are bigger than a shoe box. The main thing to remember is that the box has to be able to fit into a large mail bag. They just don't want you sending off 50 pound boxes!!!!;) I think my heaviest box was 22 lbs. and that's because it was full of batteries.

TwinMom7- I know you can't sent religious materials to those stationed in Kuwait, but can you send them Easter cards and candies that don't specifically contain religious words and teachings?

I have SGT Ocasio and SFC Libbie Adams. Anyone else have those names?

I got 2 soldiers today as well! :)

SSG Michael Law stationed in Kuwait
and
CTR3 Bertha Mayner stationed on the USS Constellation

Could someone with more experience with the Navy tell me what a CTR3 is? I am totally not familiar with that and I'd like to know :)

Both my soldiers asked for toiletries, books, magazines, gum, beef jerky and some other personal items. I am headed to Wal Mart shortly!!!!

I would think that Easter cards and candy are fine....just be careful of chocolates. Remember, your packages are going to a desert and they may sit for days in the back of a truck before opened by your soldier. My son took a rosary with him, but we were told that we couldn't send any other religious items to him - because of the Muslim country. That's also the reason that no alcohol and no pornography are allowed in CARE packages.

Any other questions...ask away!!
