I found out on Thursday that I am getting laid off. :sad1: My boss had been acting weird lately but I didn't think that this was going to happen. It was very shocking! I can work here through July 4th and then I get three months severance. There is a slight chance I could get another position within the company but it wouldn't be in my field. It is weird going to work knowing you won't be there for very long. I recently got divorced so it is just me. I feel bad for those people who have families. Any coping strategies??

Get your resume together and start interviewing!!!

Sorry about the layoff. We have been battling it for months and we almost have closure.

I am sorry. I have been laid off 3 times.. All by the time I was 27.

The good thing is you have notice. 3 months severance
will give you the summer off :)

At least you got some notice. You have six months of income & benefits to find something else (maybe it will even be something *better*). Start looking for other situations(don't wait), keep your contacts up, talk to people in your field(friends/family/professional acquaintances). See where you can economize *now*, in case you don't find a new job for a while.

Good luck,
agnes!

Submit resume's. Network- let your friends and family know that you are looking for a job.

My advice is not to take the summer off. Use that time to interview! I suggest you, as another poster stated, get your resume together and start interviewing now.

Jobs rarely fall into laps. You were so fortunate to at least have a "heads up" and a 3 month severance. You are very fortunate! Good luck! Pixie dust coming your way! :thumbsup2

Update your resume and look for a new job. Cut back on all wants and save, save, save.

I'm pretty much in agreement with everyone here...get your resmue in order and start looking now. Even if something doesn't pan out right off, then at least you know that you have 3 months severance comming.

I updated my resume over the weekend and sent it off to a few headhunters I have worked with before. I am definitely not taking the summer off intentionally. I would LOVE to do that but financially it is no good. I hope to find something new before July so I can bank the severance. My problem is that my degree is in something different then my job experience. I have trouble getting interviews. I am only 26 so my job experience is somewhat limited. Thanks for the good wishes!! :) I know this happens in today's world but it is more upsetting then I thought it would be.

Recently divorced and losing your job? Well, don't do what I did, which is taking several months off. It really hasn't improved my quality of life any, though it is simplifying it. There's a certain amount of peace in knowing that I can fit everything I own into my car, and still have enough room left to sleep in it too. :p

As for it being upsetting, well, sure it is! But, it can also be refreshing. A bit of a new start, new roads to travel, new opportunities!

Expierence usually trumps education. You can always do volunteer work in the field of your education to get your expierence up & get more doors to open up for you.

No matter what, look at this as an opportunity. If the doors are shut, open a window kind of thing. And you have 6 months to get that window open--start messing with those locks now.

:wizard: Good luck to you!

I agree with the posters who said, "start putting out resumes now." Check the job listings on Monster and in the newspaper.

It's possible that you could have a new job lined up before July and you could pocket all of your severance money. But, just in case, try to reduce your monthly spending as much as possible now and put some cushion away in savings.

Good Luck!

I agree with this. OP, if you're looking for a job in the field you've been working in, make sure that your "Experience" is listed at the top of your resume and your "Education" is listed below. (When you're first starting out and don't have much experience, "Education" should be at the top.)

Also, you could write a kick-butt cover letter that briefly explains your experience and abilities in the field you've been working.

I'm so sorry you're getting laid off. That happened to me two years ago. It sucks. I went through all the stages of loss from shock, to anger, to depression. It's natural. The best thing you can do to take your mind off it is to start looking for another job. If you can, search from work - what do you care, you won't be there soon. And if you have any use-it-or-lose-it vacation or sick leave time, be sure to use it all up before you leave!

Been laid off several times; it's no fun. If nothing shows up by the time you are actually terminated you might think about temping. I was offered four different positions as a result of temping at the companies and accepted the best job I'd ever had! It's a great foot in the door. It will also help stretch the severance pay.

Sorry to hear about the lay off. Start looking now. You'll be glad you did!!

Good luck to you in your search.

Tuesday will be a rough day in the Detroit area. Over 1,000 engineering jobs are expected to be cut at the GM Technical Center on "Black Tuesday".
