This morning one of my students had a shirt on with a snowman that was made of money. I had read that the frowning snowman logo shirts, popularized by "young Jeezy" (where do these rappers get their names? 
). The snowman represents the "dope man" and snow is cocaine. So I asked the young man, who I have had for 2 years now, to turn his shirt inside out for me. He disputed my claim that the shirt was a drug reference.
So I went to the dean of students between classes and he had no idea what I was talking about. He called the kid down and conferred with the campus resource officer. He offered the boy 2 choices. One, he could turn the shirt inside out and go back to class. Two, he could keep displaying the shirt, but if the dean found out on the internet that there was any drug reference involved, he would get 2 days in-school suspension. He turned the shirt inside out and went back to class.
After they did their research the dean came up to my room and told me "good job" on the snowman thing. He said things change so quickly that sometimes one gets by them. Now if we notice frowning snowman shirts we are to refer the students to the office (no drug or alcohol reference shirts are allowed according to our dress code). He thanked me for making them aware of it.
I guess internet surfing does pay off sometimes!
