I have followed the Atkins induction plan to the letter for the past 2 weeks. After the first week I was down almost 7 pounds. The second week I put on three. Three!!! I thought I was supossed to be losing weight. I am thinking tha maybe Atkins isn't the right diet for me. I'm not giving up on loing weight and getting healther but maybe Atkins isn't for me. I just feel very discouraged.

:guilty:

Hi Jennifer  No, you are not going to give up. I'm not an Atkins person (can you say "carboholic" :rotfl: ). So I am of absolutely no help in trying to explain what has happened. Maybe induction just does weird things to your body until you are used to this no/limited carb lifestyle. I just don't think that 2 weeks is enough for you to make a decision. Many things can change your weight within an hour, let alone a week. Is TOM approaching? During my last TOM, which lasted 10 days by the way  , I woke up every morning not even being able to move my rings on my fingers. It hurt to try and bend them. Something was making me retain water, which can count for lots of weight gain. It's funny ... the more water you drink, the less you retain. So maybe try upping your water intake.

Take care! I know there are lots of Atkins people here on WISH that may be able to simply answer it for you. :wizard:

Also--if you are not taking in enough calories...your body will hang onto what it can for dear life. I know those diets are not calorie restricting--but if you don't get enough--or conversely---too much, it can stall progress.

I see a baby in your sig--are you nursing...you need 500 extra calories per day--so whatever you were trimming to lose weight--or even to just maintain weight calorie wise--you need 500 on top of that.

You can try South Beach and see if that works for you better--there is an excellent forum for it at prevention.com . It isn't a carb limiting diet--you just eliminate bread products/fruits/and sugar for the first two weeks and then slowly reintroduce GOOD carbs. If you feel hungered/deprived in the first phase--then you can load up on beans. But given you have already done the induction period on Atkins--you can just cross over to Phase II of SBD (since you shouldn't be on Phase I for more than 2 weeks anyway)--just introduce items 1 at a time every 2 or 3 days--to monitor how your system reacts to it. For example--I discovered eating canteloupe in the morning for me is like eating a bag full of candy--ravenous all day long as my blood sugars had some fun with the canteloupe. (doesn't happen to everybody).

Blondy876-I don't have any advice specifically about atkins, I just wanted to say -Don't give up on yourself!!! Give Atkins a little more time or try something different. You know you're already a success because you're trying to take care of yourself!

GO BLONDY!!!!! :cheer2: :cheer2:

You can give up on dieting, but you can't give up on yourself or getting healthy. Getting into a healthier lifestyle is one thing, dieting is another. I can't diet either as I feel that I am depriving myself of something and then I start craving it.

You can do this, you just need to find the method that is right for you. Keep pushing yourself and hanging in there. Coming to the boards is one great way to help keep you on track.

Jennifer,

I have been on Atkins for almost 1year and I am down 43lbs - but it took a year! DH has lost close to 70lbs in the same amount of time also on Atkins :confused3 . People lose wgt at different rates - I lose SSSOOO SSLLOOWWLLYY and DH twice as fast! But I have more energy, I am never hungry and I feel over all so much healthier than I did last year that although I want to lose the LBS - I KNOW I am healthier and I KNOW in time all the wgt will be gone!

So no matter what plan you choose to follow......

HANG IN THERE!!! YOU WILL DO IT!!!!

Sue

I tried Atkins because friends and realitives were losing so much so guickly but I have done WW for 2 yrs now...

I only lost a pound the first week and I was so upset because I did everything right but I stopped and went back to weight watchers it just fits me. I think there are different plans and you need to find what fits with your eating habits/styles. And which one can you live with.

I still try to limit "bad" carbs with the WW plan but it fits better for me.

Good Luck

Hang in there! Your body fluctuates so much by the week that I would give it at least 4 weeks. Weighing the same time of the month is a big key to really know what's going on.

Don't give up - if the plan doesn't fit, try a different plan but don't give up. It is a long journey and we're all on it together!

I so agree with everyone about not giving up. You just have to find the program that's right for you. I tried WW, Jenny Craig and several other programs with limited success but South Beach just clicked somehow for me. It fits my lifestyle and I'm getting results. You might want to try SBD and see if it will work for you.

I agree, hand in there. Find what works for you. If one doesn't there is always another program out there that might work for you. I couldn't do WW. It didn't work for me, but SBD, worked for me to. I'm 57 pounds lighter now and it took me 9 months. I've been maintaining since last September. I've actually made it to 125 pounds, 5 pounds than my goal. Please don't give up

DON'T GIVE UP!!!!!!!

I gained two pounds after the first week and a week post MOT. I knew I had to hang in there. After five weeks I have lost 17 lbs.
Give your body time to adjust to the new way of eating.
When your body starts to adjust to taking in more protein and less carbs, you will start to cut back on your protein and thus your calories.
The weight will come off.

One thing I do is keep a journal, and I do not exceed 1700 calories

Don't give up! I always lose weight and then gain the second week, I have no idea why! It's really tough, but just stick with it! :flower:

Please don't give up. Give yourself a chance. It is not unusual to stall. Are you exercising? If so, some of this may be explained away with that. If you are not, just be patient. It will come. Be sure as offered above to get in the calories that you don't fall too low. Your body will fight more if it thinks it is starving. Spread out your eating over time instead of consuming it all at once. I have found that works for me. Drink LOTS of water.

Also, if you have read Atkins book after a short time you do introduce healthy carbs and it seems to be similar to South Beach then. Good luck and never give up. You can do this.

Don't give up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Try something different-- you need to find what works best for you-- I know I tried South Beach, and lasted about 2 (maybe 3) days on it-- I just need carbs to survive. I also fear with the low carb (knowing that I do need carbs), that it would not be a lifestyle choice and I would gain back the weight after I lose it...

...For me, what works best is a low-calorie, 60-20-20 ratio of food (60% carb, 20% protein, 20% fat)-- if I do it differently, I am tired, and can't make it through a day (I'm also training for a marathon)... I follow weight watchers for my calorie intake...

...Moral is, don't give up, but don't fret if you have to try several different plans until you find one that works for you!

Please don't give-up. I know it's hard. I gave up for a whole day last week.

I had a baby 5 months ago. I have exercised almost everyday since I came home from the hospital. Just this last Wednesday, I went to my OB for my annual exam, and I lost it. I told her that I have been soooooo depressed and my weight was not helping. I cryed for about 5 min. She too, just had a baby a few months ago. She told me how she lost it.

She told me to try NO rice, bread, or potatoes for just one month, and get 30 minutes of cardio exercise a day. (do treadmill, aerobic tapes etc.). So I started that very night. I weighed myself today: Sunday. I HAVE LOST 4.2 POUNDS in 4 DAYS!!!!!!!!!

I have been stuck at 171 pounds since my six week post-baby check-up, and I exercise almost everyday. My doctor and I have plans to have my thyroid checked. But first, she wanted me to try this . AND IT WORKED!!!!

I am still going to have my thyroid checked. Apparently babies have a tendency to mess us up like that. Perhaps you too should talk to your doctor about it.

Lastly, I work in the health and fitness industry. But, I personally do not support the Adkins. It is really not healthy. The South Beach and WW are so much better for you.

It sounds like we are in the same boat (post baby). I need a weight loss buddy. If you ever need someone to e-mail to, PM me. I am all ears :listen:
