I finally know what it's like to feel unencumbered at Disney

... And it was awesome.

Yup, I left all my gear in the room and went out with just an iPhone5 in my hands - that's it. No pocketbook, no camera bag, no nothing, just my phone.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Did I miss it? To be honest, not really. I did have the phone camera so that "need to shoot" was fulfilled. And I could even use some of my skills in getting good shots if I wanted to, but truthfully, it felt so good to just "enjoy the moment", I was content to not put a lot of effort into it.

What was really telling, was that in riding Haunted Mansion with my family several times, each of them pointed out things I'd never noticed before. I realized then that in trying to capture my shots, I'd missed out on a lot of the little things without even realizing it.

So how were my shots? Um, they were ok. I got a few good ones here and there. But some nice snapshots of my family, which was most important to me. And DH got some nice video on his iPhone 4S. And my kids got some good shots on theirs. So all together, we did ok photographically. (BTW, we were not alone - many, many folks were shooting with just their phones.)

Having had many "camera intensive" trips before, I have most of the shots I've ever wanted to get, and repeating them seemed redundant. I'm sure in the future I may go back to wanting to enjoy it again someday. But this was a quick trip, and it was hot and crowded, and although it wasn't planned that way, it felt good to finally give it a whirl.

I know the feeling. It's definitely a totally different experience. Truthfully, if I visited Disney more often, I'd mix up whether to bring lots of camera gear versus just the RX100 versus no camera at all.
With just 1 trip every couple of years, it's harder for me to pass up the photography aspects.
If I make a trip in the next year, maybe I'll vow to myself to skip the camera on the rides themselves.

What I like to do, is pick a day [or 2] toward the end of our trip, where I can just shoot...maybe a day when DW and DS/DD, are off doing their own thing(s). This way, I can go back and capture what I have experienced over the last few days on either video or pics. I'll still carry a small P&S type camera with me daily [my Fuji XF-1] just in case and for family fun pics, but leave the 'planned type shots' for later on.

So can we see what you 'shot' w/ your iphone? Post some pics, so I can fill my Disney habbit, por favor?? LOL

I walk around with a Canon D20. It's small, waterproof, has the grid lines in the view finder which makes the rule of thirds easy and is has HD video if I want it. The SLR now stays at home. I'm happy.
