For the longest time I didn't understand why DW wouldn't give carb counts. Here is a short version of what happened to us tonight at Olive Garden. Thankfully, I am not a new mom. DD5 diagnosed one year ago.

My 2 daughters and I ate at Olive Garden tonight. DD5 ended up eating a breadstick. Of course, O.G. is not in the Calorie king book. So I tried Fazoli's. No breadstick was listed.

I asked the server, "do you have a nutritional guide? I need the carbohydrate count of the breadstick."
him: I think it has like 1500 but I will ask the back.
me: NO WAY does a breadstick have 1500 carbs.
He walks away and another server brings me a nutritional guide.
him: Ma'am the "Culinary specialist" says a breadstick has 700 carbs.
me: Thank you very much.

I told DD16 that's 100 units of insulin he is basically telling me to give DD5. Do you know what that would do to her? If I was a new type one mom or someone not educated, can you imagine what could have happened. With that much insulin, nothing could have been done to save her by the time it hit her blood stream.

I thought maybe they mixed up carbs and calories. So, I looked. NOPE. 150 calories and 25 carbs. no where is there a 1500 or even 700 near breadsticks.

Yes, I take responsibility for my daughter's care but still .......... That's scary. Now, I am a litte more appreciative of Disney's caution.

It never fails to amaze me the lack of regard for for why someone would be asking that.. honestly.. I have never relied on asking a person at a restaurant for this very reason. When Dd was newly diagnosed she was on NPH/regular therapy and was set on 60 carbs in a meal. We went to Red Robin with the whole family and she wanted a diet coke. Ok.. we ordered it for her and when it came I sipped it to make sure it was not regular ( something I learned quick because it is rarely right) which it indeed was. I told the waiter.. who looked at me like I was stupid.. even after I explained why it had to be diet. Next cup... root beer... I called the manager over and explained what happened.. not even the manager got it... Whats so hard about doing what a person asks? What if I had let DD drink that without checking? There has to be some accountability at restaurants for things like this. I totoally understand why Disney cant give carb counts.. I dont use them anyway and have become a wiz and figuring it out on my own but I know they dont want to go out on that limb and be wrong...
700 carbs.. geez... thats scary for so many reasons.. what if you hadnt second guessed them? I know the info is published because I have an olive garden guide ( which says the bread sticks are 22 carbs.. so there ya go... more confusion)... I could rant for hours about this lol... over 5 years of managing type 1 I have heard it and experience it all.. and it never fails to amaze me.
I am glad you didnt give her 700 carbs worth of insulin... I dont even want to think about the outcome of that!

I use Calorie King software to assist me with meal planning. I had wondered why the Calorie King counts for various things I track did not always match up with commercial packaging. Then I read about the under-reporting on packaging. I had not realized how inexact some of the statements on boxes and cans could be. Same way with information provided for restaurant chains - thus the difference between the Olive Garden's figures and the Calorie King figures.

I didn't ask the server for the count. I ask him for a nutritional guide and I would have NEVER taken his word on it. I know enough now to say "bread stick = a very fatty slice of bread .... maybe 18 or 20. Which would have sufficed.

BUT when we went to DW only days after dd diagnosis a little over a year ago, I would have taken someone's word for the carb count. I was that naive and uneducated about Type 1 diabetes and carbohydrates. That's why I understand DW policy now even if that isn't the reason, thank the Lord, they don't give carb counts.

Same thing happened to us at Cracker barrel and our fave Mexican restaurant a few months ago. Dd was given sweet tea and regular mt. dew. Always ALWAYS check the drink.

I just bought Calorie King book today, I try to keep track of what I eat and the carb counts but it is not easy. I rarely eat out so I am a little concerned about my upcoming trip to Disney. I can't even imagine trying to monitor a child with diabeties. I am not sure if I would ever trust information a server might give me in regards to nutritional information unless it was in printed form. It is a good thing you knew better than to believe such a high carb count for the bread stick.
