Ive been shopping at my local Walmart since it opened 8 years ago. So imagine my surprise and embarrassment tonight when the cashier said to me, Uhh, maam, do you have less than 20 items? What?!?! This is the express lane?? I REALLY had no idea.
Ive checked out of this register many times in the past I guess I must have had less than 20 items, so it wasnt an issue. The lady in line behind me said the same thing as me i.e., she had no idea it was express, either. Of course the third one in line adds (with an implied duhhh) yeah, its the express line.
So I take my first 2 items off the conveyor and put them back in my basket so I can head over to another checkout with my tail between my legs. As I pass the others in line I wonder out loud Is there a sign that says 20 items or less? and the third lady in line points up to the #10 check-out lane sign where there are not kidding several yellow sticky notes forming a patchwork sign to indicate the express lane.
I really felt awful about this. I am totally NOT NOT NOT an express-lane-over-loader. Really. My DH kids me cuz Im such an anal rule-abiding type. The shock of tonight's news almost choked him on his cookie as I told him about it when I got home. The kids were laughing at me yesterday cuz I walked 6 blocks to feed my parking meter. You get the idea.
Now that I'm over my humiliation, Im coming up with my defense wouldnt you agree a sticky-note sign is pretty pathetic? And dont you think 20 items or less is a sorry excuse for an express line? Whats express about that?
Dont get me wrong I totally know I was at fault for not spotting the sign. But, cmon. Can I get a little break here?
Thanks for listening.
