REPORT FROM OUR TRIP TO AKV 12/18 - 12/21

I just have to write about our recent trip to AKV. We own at BWV and have only stayed on-site at either BWV or the Contemporary. We initially booked BWV, but due to a mix-up on our waitlist (long story) we wound up cancelling altogether and tried for a different weekend.

We lucked into getting two nites in AKV – a value studio – and waitlisted the other nite. About a week before our trip we got the third nite at AKV – in another value studio.... BUT, this was a non-dedicated unit....different from our first two nites in a dedicated value studio. UGH!! Talk about confusing!! Anyway, off we went. Hoping for the best (like maybe not having to switch rooms).

We did not have much interest in AKV, but the kids seemed excited. We always thought it was too far. We do not like riding the Disney buses too much. And we (for health and other reasons) are not too adventurous in the food department. So, the kids were way more excited than the adults.

I checked us in, while DH and both DDs stayed in the car with our dog, who was going to Grandma’s house. Let me tell you, it wasn’t even dusk yet and AKL seemed VERY DARK to me. Upon entering I thought, “Oh, no, this is not for us.” We don’t like dark furniture. And, I could smell the smoke (which I am highly sensitive to). But the staff was very warm and helpful and tried their best to get us three nites in the same room (to no avail!).

When the kids and I went up to our room (very convenient, near the elevators, pool-view) and opened the door, my oldest asked where the rest of the condo was (spoiled, huh?). But, I must say, the VALUE rooms are SMALL! I had to figure out where to put all of those pillows (from the bed and pull-out) and all our overpacked luggage. It was not an easy task. I called my DH, who was on the way to Grandma’s and told him “You’re going to hate it....It’s tiny.....It’s dark.....It’s smoky.....And I don’t see any animals!”

Anyway, we went down to the busstop to head to Epcot for the Candlelight Processional. Well, I had my first of many AKV treats. The busstop is FANTASTIC. At BWV we all wait on one bench, eagerly watching to see what the oncoming bus displays as its destination. At AKV there are separate areas for each park (and DTD, too), with separate seating. Very convenient. And the pleasant surprises kept coming.....The bus was virtually empty, since it is only for AKL/AKV guests...no other pick-ups (at BWV we always share with Swan and Dolphin....extra stops and extra guests). Yes, the ride took slightly longer, but it was not that long, and very pleasant.

The next morning we walked around a bit (but had to get at MK for rope drop so no real dawdling about). But, we did manage to see a few animals from the observation deck. Had another FANTASTIC busride to MK. LOVE the AKV buses!!!!

That night we discovered Mara, AKV’s counter-service. Having a counter service option right there was GREAT! At BWV, there’s the boardwalk....lots of fun and table service...but no counter-service. Went to Mara the next morning for breakfast. Great!! Eggs and Mickey waffles. What more could you ask for??? Especially for the girls! Quick and inexpensive, too!

We did wind up having to switch rooms (to four rooms down from our original room). We’ve never had to switch rooms during a stay. It was handled quite well. The bell person loaded up our luggage and by noon they had our other room ready. We had just come back from AK for a swim, so the timing was perfect. The room was exactly the same (still tiny), but it was really starting to feel like home.

Just in case, we had a packed a small bag with our swimsuits and left the bag in our car. Did I mention that there is very convenient self-parking at AKV?? It is very close, which is great for people like us who like to use our car a lot. (Although not on this trip....the buses were too great!).

The kids loved the pool and slide (although my oldest favors the Keister Coaster to the AK slide). They loved the playground.....especially since you could see GIRAFFES from the top of the equipment. And flamingos...and horned animals (maybe Gnus...I don’t remember). We took a walk around the place and saw more animals (zebras and antelope type animals....I have to refer to my list).

Mara was always there if we wanted to grab something to eat. And the buses were always running in a timely fashion, and never full. My kids could swim and play and see animals. And I even started to like dark furniture....and my tiny little room with the comfy bed and flat screen TV. The more we looked around the more we loved it. It really is a beautiful resort!

Don’t get me wrong. We still love BWV and are going to stay there next December (we like to walk to Epcot and DHS for Christmastime events and you can’t beat watching the fireworks from your own balcony), but we fell in LOVE with AKV!!! In fact, we are staying in AKV again this March!!

I always hear people on these boards saying how they try the different DVC resorts and I always thought “why?” Well, now I know. We took a chance on something different and it was the best thing we’ve done in a long time!! I wish we had some extra money.....I’d buy an add-on at AKV!

Hey,we were there the same dates at AKV. I know people complain about the bus service but we have NEVER had a problem. My favorite spot is the fire pit in the lobby after a long day at the parks with a good glass of wine:thumbsup2 We did'nt like it the first time we stayed but now it's our favorite. BWV is our 2nd favorite and we try to do a split stay each year. Glad you liked it:woohoo:

I'm so glad you guys had a good time at AKV! We'll be staying there for the first time in April, and I can't wait!!!

Also, I love posts like this! My husband and I decided when we bought DVC that we were going to try out every resort. It's been the best decision we could have made (next to buying!). We are getting so much enjoyment out of our membership. Each trip is different, and feels like we're vacationing somewhere new! We try different restaurants, find new things to do, and visit places we've never visited at WDW.

The other pleasant surprise...we haven't developed an affinity to any one resort. Like your AKV experience, every time I leave a resort, I get "add-on-itis!" Seriously! I leave thinking, "I want points here." We haven't had a bad experience, and we've never been to a place where we've thought we wouldn't go back. I'm never disappointed with my reservations, because while I may have a preference for a given stay, if I can't get my first choice (which hasn't happened yet), I'll be fine with whatever I do get. :thumbsup2

Thanks for posting your experience! Even if people don't fall in love, I enjoy reading what others appreciate about a given resort. I take mental notes for our next visit!!! ;)

We purchased an AKV add-on after we had a stay there in Aug. I saw how I couldn't get my teen girls off the balcony. They stayed out there for HOURS watching the animals....talking on their cell phones. Dh and I could tell they really loved it. Mara was a hit with us as well. We really like the themeing there too. We came very close to an add-on at VWL but dh couldn't get around the fact of more years and also the 5 sleep in a one bedroom and the extra bathroom at AKV.

We love AKL. I have to admit I love Wilderness lodge as well. When we bought @ AKV we thought it was the best deal at the time. When we went and stayed there we just fell in love with the place. I love the dark furniture and having an adult bevy by the fire pit is awesome. My wife and I went there back in August for our anniversary. We weren't staying there; we live about twenty miles away. We just went there and put the kids in Simba's club house and the wife and I had a lovely dinner at Jiko and we to Victoria's afterwards. It was great. When we were there last spring the we went to Animal Kingdom and weren't there for an hour before the kids were wanting to go back to the resort and play there.

I always thought I would like AKV, from the brochures and pictures -- but when I got there -- I truly fell in love with the place. I can't explain it, something just came over me when I got there and saw it for real.

While I love every place we have stayed, I think I love AKV the most. We'll be heading there on Monday and I can't wait. This time I am taking my whole family, and I got savanna views for everyone. From the youngest (4 weeks) to the oldest (79 years), I think it will be perfect. I just know my whole family will be in love with AKV.

Thanks for taking the time to share your experience. I'm so glad you had a great time.

By the way, I've never had a bad experience with the buses at AKV - they do seem very efficient. I really like not having to make several stops after pickup. It makes the journey seem so much faster.

Deb:thumbsup2

Thanks for the terrific report. Our first stay at AKV is coming up in March. We usually drive to the parks because we don't like standing on crowded busses (knee issues) so it's nice to know the bus service is still as great as it was when we stayed at AKL a few years ago. We're looking forward to many quick meals and snacks at Mara as well as breakfast at Boma. We too are a family who is attempting to try each DVC resort at least once. After reading your positive TR I am really excited about our upcoming stay at AKV.

Luvthedis,

Thank you. :lovestruc

Your post made my day. Not having the best day and this made me smile broadly

I could have written it.

When I first bought DVC I was so ready for a BCV add-on. I knew I would love everything about it. So I stayed there. And I didn't. It was so strange. I would stay there again - hey it's DVC!!! And nice. But I'm still shocked that it didn't feel the way I perceived/was certain it would.

I've stayed at all the DVCs except VB - hoping to get there this March. And it's lovely to go everywhere because of what you wrote.

AKV - I nabbed my parents a last minute savannah view studio. I myself thought oh I won't like AKV. I don't like dark. I like light a la OKW. Not for me. Blah, blah, blah. And I loved their room. It felt homey. And the interiors were strangely soothing. I can't wait to go back.

It's so funny what one thinks they will like and not like. Sometimes you're bang on. And sometimes there are big surprises.

Thanks OP. Loved the post.

Isn't it funny how people who haven't TRIED AKV don't understand just how efficient those buses are there?! Oh My! AKV has the BEST bus service! AND....if you're staying on the right side of the building, adjacent to the bus stop you can zip down the stairs and you come out just almost right there at the bus stop! A 2 minute walk!:thumbsup2

Now...do yourself a favor...when you go back in March...you must get a ressie for Boma! You just have to try it once! It is WONDERFUL. We also love the Mara for breakfast & lunch...but Boma is SO-O good!! It is really unique...and everything is good. OMG the soups!:cloud9: I promise you will be pleasantly surprised!:thumbsup2

where did the smokey smell come from ? I am confused?

Disney-Kim: I guess the smoky smell was from the fire. Like I said, I am very, very sensitive to smoke. I think that I was on high alert to being negative when I first walked in, also, and that made everything exagerrated. During our three nights and days, the smell didn't seem to bother me again!

I'm glad to hear that I am not the only one who loves AKV.....But it is making it harder to get my reservations for March!!! I can only get three days out of six! My fingers are crossed for the wait list!

luvthedis, thank you for sharing your wonderful story! I am so happy you had a great time and fell in love with AKV. :)

Some people are not open (or scared) to change or trying new things, and they are missing out on a lot of great experiences.

I hope you get all your days for March. *fingers crossed*

So true! We bought at VWL because we'd loved WL. But it just didn't "do it" for us. On our first stay, we told MS to give us the last night at a different resort, any one, so we could try them all. We packed up and moved to OKW for the last night...and DH has gone to OKW now every chance he gets. What's funny is that we were actually a little disappointed when MS booked us at OKW, We'd driven thru there and didn't like the looks of it. Staying there was altogether different.

I guess I am the only one who is very hesitant about staying at AKV. I am concerned about the dark decor, the remoteness, having to take a bus to everywhere, and the different spices at the restaraunts. I have yet to visit, this is on my list. No flames please, I just feel it is somewhat cruel to house all of these animals into a large "viewing" space. Its like, I kinda get that Jurassic Park feeling. I know its me, so I'm trying to keep an open mind.:rolleyes1

The same designer for WL was the one for AK and it's pretty evident. I guess you could say it's "remote" if you are used to staying at BWV where you can walk to Epcot and boat to MGM. But I don't think AK/AKV would have the same appeal if one could walk all around and shop and dine and watch fireworks from their room and see hustle and bustle. I think the mystique of AK/AKV is the fact that you "feel" you are away from it all. It's a very short bus ride to AK and MGM....and further to MK & Epcot.

It's the same bus ride from BWV to the AKV, as the bus from AKV to Epcot would be. Depending on whatever resort you're staying at, some park is going to feel a little remote ? And as far as it being cruel.....that is definitely an opinion some may hold. But then that goes true for the AK park itself, any zoo in the world, Sea World......any place that houses animals for viewing. It's fine that this is your opinion (not flaming) and others may share it, but then that view encompasses zoos and animal viewing areas all over. We find it a very unique hotel experience. It's a great way for kids to learn about different animals and for adults to appreciate the beauty of nature. That's just the way I look at it I guess. There is so much animal cruelty in the world (seal and whale hunting....just seeing animals abused at your local SPCA and animal shelters---we have fostered cats/dogs before).

AK may not be for you....but give it a try. I find the decor/scents/tastes all a very interesting bit of another culture. We love the food at AK and we're looking forward to the new restaurant opening up at Kidani.

OMG, Hope!! I'm not flaming you, but the food at AKV is FABULOUS! I have seriously taken an interest in African cuisine...particularly Moroccon style foods since eating at Boma.

I've said before, I wouldn't decorate my HOME this dark...but it REALLY makes you feel like you've been transported to another place when you're there. It is just so unusual. AKV touches all of your senses. And they have the BEST buses. It doesn't feel so remote, really because the buses are so good.

As far as the animals...I think they have it pretty darned good. They have plenty of space, are well fed, they are allowed to interact among themselves with different species just like in the wild. This is NOT like the Elephant house down at the National Zoo on a hot day in July!!:scared: Have you ever done the safari ride at AK park? They are allowed to wander & meander around. They stop in the road & hold things up and nobody shoos them away or anything. They have free will to roam around. I don't think they realize they're in captivity there. I really don't.

I know you're trying VWL in May...and HHI in the fall...but you must keep AKV on your short list!!:thumbsup2

Yeah, I guess those animals do have it pretty good!:rotfl: The Elephant House!!! Is that bad or what!:rotfl: I am keeping an open mind....maybe if I can ever get concierge one time, I would take one of those Safari tours. It takes sooooo much planning to get to the world, I would just really hate to be disappointed. Also with my asthma, I think that is also weighing on my mind, with the smoke and different spice smells. But like I said, its just me, seems like plenty of folks love the resort....:hippie:

I love AKV but it isn't for everyone, I never rent a car and take Disney buses everywhere and the longest wait I have ever had at AKV was about 15 minutes for a Downtown Disney Bus.

As for the food, I am not someone who can eat food with spices some I don't like but mostly due to having severe reflux disease and I absolutly love Boma the spices are subtle and the food is quite tasty, I also ate at the Mara and not all the food has spices they do have "normal" breakfast foods as well as burgers. When we ate dinner at Boma, I told my sister I would try the chicken as I usually only eat the Prime Rib at buffets the roasted chicken was awesome, it was so good that I had to have seconds. Since you are so apprehensive about it I would suggest the next time you are at WDW take an afternoon and go to AKL/AKV walk around, go into the Mara , look at the menu possibly have lunch then you will get a feel for it and I don't think you will be disappointed.

Thanks for the great review of AKV. We are staying there for the first time in April. (renting a friend's points) I have the same concerns... remoteness of the location, food options, etc so I am very glad to read your input. Our kids are young (5 and 3) so we usually stay near the MK (Poly or WL), so we are really branching out by trying AKL. I'll be sure to post about our trip when we return.
