Hi!
I haven't stayed on International Drive for quite a while, but I'll try to answer some of your questions about it. First of all, there are sidewalks and lots of "minor attractions" for teens/or anyone who is interested (Titanic, Hard Rock Vault, Ripley's Believe It Or Not, Wonderworks.) There are also shopping plazas like Pointe Orlando and the Mercado. There are many restaurants. Depending on where you stay, most of these places can be walked to.
There is no doubt in my mind that this area will keep kids busy, if the funds are available. (or even if not, because the kids can always browse the shopping attractions.)
I hate to sound harsh, but I would just like to point out that International Drive is a very busy road. at all times of the day. I am a mother of a teen and I would be very concerned about him being alone on International Drive. I think a lot of people do not obey the posted speed limt on that road. That makes me very nervous!
Anyway, usually during the day. lots of people are walking up and down I-Drive. Conventioneers, tourists, etc. (Later at night, or even at daytime hours, some disreputable characters may show up.) My hubby and I went to that area for a conference two weeks ago and were not impressed by a man soliciting funds from people outside the Sand Lake Road McDonalds. So what to do? I'm not exactly sure. I believe if you hang with your kids on I-Drive you'll be fine. I just wouldn't leave them on their own. (From a very conservative mom.) Sorry!
