Hannah Montana succeeds based on the premise that Miley Stewart is an ordinary girl who does ordinary things (goes to school, deals with her brother, teenager issues). But her secret (known only to her family and a few close friends) is that shes actually Hannah Montana
a world famous pop star. With her normal hair, shes Miley. With the blonde wig, shes Hannah. So, on the show she deals with the stuff every kid has to deal with, but she also gets to be a rock star. (And what 12 year old girl doesnt think thats cool?) Thats the "big deal": kids can identify with her Miley character and they have wishful identification with the Hannah character. They can buy the music, sing along; they feel like rock stars themselves.
As for the music
it has spent time at number 1 on the Billboard Top 200 and the concert tour sells out in minutes. Shes not going away anytime soon, and in my opinion the show has more value to it than a lot of things kids could be watching. Dont be surprised if you hear her music on top-40 radio soon
its already on quite a few popular radio stations that would not be caught dead associating themselves with Disney Channel.
You may not like Hannah Montana because it wasnt made for you, or you may not like it because youve only watched five seconds of it. The cartoons and Mickey Mouse Club? Kids wont watch them anymore. Spongebob is the current cartoon-to-beat. As far as I know, PBSs Zoom was the closest thing to MMC and its done.
I take it you didnt care much for ABCs Rockin New Years Eve?
