I don't like what happened to me at WalMart...

Thank You to those of you who have stated that the card isn't Valid unless signed. you are 100% correct. You are also correct that a store does not have to accept a card that is not signed/or one that states See ID. This is NOT a safty measure, especially in this day and age of Identity theft. It is easy to make a fake id and carry it with you. Please, please make sure that you do sign your cards, and have See ID signed next to your name.

I have talked to Dept. store credit card companies and also to my VISA company and they all said that it was a good thing ont to sign it and just write to please see ID....so that is what I do with mine now...though 90 percent of the places dont even look at the back...but hopefully if I lose it they will try to use it at the one place that DOES ask for ID.

I think he should have asked before touching the OPs wallet/purse, but he was probably just doing his job or possibly thought he was doing the OP a favor by letting her do what she was doing and not "disturbing" her.

What I thought was weird was one day when we were at JC Penney's. Me and my mom were there with my grandma. My grandma went out into the mall while me and my mom paid. We used my grandma's Penney's credit card. The cashier asked to see my mom's driver's liscence. The cashier glanced at the card and the DL, and never said a word. My mom and grandma have completely different last names, the first initial isn't even the same. I don't know what the purpose of checking the DL was. :confused3

My cards say "See photo ID", I didn't realize they were not valid unless signed. I do find it funny that when they compare the signed receipt with the back of my card they just smile and say thank you. HELLO See photo id is not the way I signed the card.

I don't object to being asked for my ID it means they are doing their job ad protecting me.

Deanna :cat: :bored:

it sounds to me too, that he thought you left your ID there for him to check. I tend to pay more attention to the machine where you're supposed sign... The only time I have a problem is when I'm at BJ's and they ask me for my license..... DUH, my picture is on the BJ's card!!!!!!! It's usually a new cashier who asks.

Just remembered there was a thread on here a while back linking to a website where a guy tried to get away with signing anything and even drawing pictures. Almost everytime he never got asked.

I had an odd situtation with my ID.

I always go to the Sprint store to pay our bill since I usually wait till the last minute :teeth:

I go the automated machine but the last time the store wasnt busy which is odd usually they have a ton of people in the store and 3 clerks staring at one computer :rotfl:

so the clerk took care of me asked for a DL so he takes my whole wallet and walks about 3 register down!!!! :confused3

I stopped him and said I'd like my wallet back!!! I'll give you the DL he did give it back but I thought where are you going with my wallet?!!!! :confused3

My credit card rarely leaves my hand. Almost everywhere I shop has card scanner that the customer uses. So, I scan it myself and put it right back in my wallet. The scanner usually says to hold card for the cashier, but the cashier never checks.

I have the same thing - I have never been asked to see ID on my cc. I only use cc's and carry very little cash. This is in the Chicago suburbs. You would think there would be more identity theft in a larger city.

The only time I have been asked for ID is when I'm getting cash back at the bank. :)

I think that many people believe that just putting "see id" is protecting them. Like you mentioned, it is extremely possible that someone could make a fake id- then the name would match the card. Also, like many other posters have said, most places still don't ask.
The best thing to do is to sign the card and put "see id" after your name. This protects you in multiple ways. It verifies that the signatures match, the names match, the person matches the id, and in Indiana, the signature is also on the ID , so they can even check those against each other.

He should have asked to see a picture ID.

The ones that get me are the ones that take a credit card and don't even check the signature, never mind ask for ID! You would think it was an ATM card.

I get asked every few times for ID a month. I don't think it is big deal but I do think him touching your change purse without asking is.

It seems to me that the cashier was just trying to do his job. More than likely he wasn't planning on asking for the ID but when you had your wallet out he probably thought you were expecting him to so he grabbed it to glance at it. Maybe he didn't think to ask you if he could grab it if he thought you had put it out for him. I wouldn't let it bother me too much.

I wouldn't be offended at all. You said the guy was someone you hadn't seen before, so he's likely new and still very conscious of following protocal. I'm quite certain checking id's for credit card use is protocal, but like anything else, people get lax with certain things when they get comfortable in something. I probably get mine checked about 50% of the time and would prefer it to be 100%. In fact, I always say a simple " Thanks for checking" when they do.

I think you are being a little too sensitive.

At my store we don't have to look at the cards if they are not a store card. Unless the system has a random check.
If it's a store card I glance at the back, but if it says check ID, I do. There are so many that comment that I'm the only one.

I am rarely asked for my ID, however, I hand over my ID because I want them to be aware and check ID. I have check ID written on the back of my cards and they don't even ask.

These people can prevent CC fraud and theft.

He should have asked for your ID and not touched your personal property without permission. Usually I like that they ask me for ID except the time we were at MGM and I wanted to pay using a credit card that's in my husband's name. Even though we have the same last name they wouldn't take it. The CM actually said I that for all he knew we could be getting divorced and me trying to run up the card out of spite. Gee, way to be magical there.

I work at The Disney Store. I always compare the signature on the credit card with the credit card receipt. If the credit card is unsigned or so faded I can't read it, I ask to see an I.D. If someone hands me their spouse's credit card, without the spouse being right there, I am required to ask them to use a credit/debit card in their own name.

Like many others I think it was a bit rude for the guy to touch your wallet but other then that I am more surprised you have never been asked for ID. I automatically have mine out at nearly every store I am at. They always ask around here at retail stores.
The two places they NEVER ask are the grocery store and dining out at dinner. Not sure why but they never have.

I did ask why ...
Like I said, then, I wouldn't have been surprised by the answer he gave. He perhaps didn't have a pre-packaged sweet-sounding answer to the inquiry, or perhaps didn't appreciate being questioned about something he was required to do as part of his job. Again, it was all probably just a misunderstanding.

Exactly right...I always sign all of mine because even our post offices will not take a card that is not signed. I have seen many a heated argument over that one...but the fine print is right there...some version of: "Not valid unless signed"

Yes, that is our SOP as far as taking credit cards. We are bound by the rules of the credit card companies. We are NOT supposed to take them if not signed.
However, after saying that, we are such a small post office that if it is not signed, I will ask for the ID. I have many who don't like it, but all I have to do is point out what it says on the back of their card. Also, be aware that if you put see ID on the back of your card, if I don't know or remember you, I WILL ASK for it. You will have to go back to your car to get it. :teeth:
And, right now, while the post office has us swiping the card, I'm even asking for the ID when they use it as a debit card. I figure if my hands have to touch it, I'm asking regardless of how it is used! I will be so glad to not ask for ID at all if the PO finally has the customer swipe it themselves.:)
Finally, do not assume that any clerk has the ability to read your mind.:)
My name is not Sister Readyourmindalot! :rotfl: Customers do so many things different, they just assume that what THEY do is normal for everyone.
That clerk that picked it up, did just assume you had laid it up there for him to see. Many times customers aren't paying us the slightest bit of attention, because of kids, cell phones, etc... and it may be easier to assume the easier, and less attention getting thing when making that decision.;)
